Matt Millen has gained some respect back from me...
I know what he did to the Lions but to hear his anger and not blindly back his former Univ. says a lot about him as a person.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:39 PM ^
he was just a terrible GM. People shouldn't conflate the two.
November 9th, 2011 at 2:33 AM ^
My biggest problem with him was not that he was a terrible GM, it's that he knew he was a terrible GM and took advantage of an senile old man (Ford) to keep collecting a big paycheck. I know it's idealistic as all hell of me to say, but he should have resigned. Bill Jr. had to publicly humiliate his own father for a move to get made.
The late Tom Kowalski implied on a number of occassions that Millen was a very sweet talker to Old Man Ford, convincing him he would right the ship when even he probably didn't believe it anymore and he also implied that Mayhew has been a much harder worker than Millen ever was.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
OK -- first off, not a Lions fan -- secondly, I'll be honest, Millen never bugged me as a TV guy. Having said that, his "emotion" on ESPN today was completely staged and I laughed when I saw it. Millen is also on the board of Sandusky's charity (also, Marky Mark is on it).
November 8th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
and think it was staged.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
I don't understand why anypne is/ should be impressed?
1) He clearly is disgusted with child molesters (as are 99.9% of all human beings)
2) He wanted PSU and JoePa to get their "due process"
BFD. Did I miss something (the writeup doesn't mention him wanting JoePa fired or anything).
November 8th, 2011 at 5:03 PM ^
he's one of the few people affiliated with PSU in any way going on TV and acting like a human being.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:05 PM ^
That's sad.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:09 PM ^
I'm looking for any shreds of humanity I can possibly find.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:31 PM ^
staged for who? lions fans are the only ppl who dont like him. I dont like his GM skills personally ,but as a man if this issue doesn't piss you off then something is wrong with ur brain. even he deserves to be upset.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:47 PM ^
double post*
November 8th, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
staged? give me a break dude.. someone that was a mentor to him and his position coach is probably going to jail for raping young children.. You think he had to stage his emotions on tv? you are an idiot, whether you like millen or not
November 8th, 2011 at 4:48 PM ^
Just my gut -- it seemed like he recovered pretty quickly. Maybe I'm wrong, which I hope I am.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:16 PM ^
It looked like he was ready to get up and leave the set. I'm not so sure it was staged.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:34 PM ^
was it staged...
I saw it live, and couldn't pull away from the TV--BUT--Switch26 hit it on the head...This guy was a mentor to Millen, and imagine digesting that someone you admired as a young man, and into adulthood could committ these acts. These are acts from a monster. I would hardly think crying on national TV in the business of conducting your job, would be what you would want to do--AND, considering hearing the acts makes people want to vomit, cry, whatever--AND they were committed by someone you looked up to--there is NO WAY that was staged. No Way. What?? because its so difficult to force a tear for those countless boys? and the embarassment how leadership did nothing??? NOTHING!! FUCKING NOTHING!!!!! shit.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:48 PM ^
OK so I thought it might have been staged when I first saw it. I am a very skeptical person but you eloquently laid out some convincing facts. Millen is a buffoon but I will tip my hat on this one to him. It was legit.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:23 PM ^
Another reason for me to dislike Mark Wahlberg.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:42 PM ^
Even a blind squirrel...
I expect Millen to be pissed/emotional. This is a case of the worst nature, and it's really unthinkable for him to not say the right things.
That does not change the fact that he was a horrible GM or considered Gholston justified. Maybe "some" respect actually means like .0001 or something.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
Get over it....IF this horrible story does anything, it tells us to put sports in a proper perspective...most of the time, we don't need that point of reference, but sometimes it is needed. How many times have people wished injuries on an opponent for example?
Millen was a horrible GM, but is a great person overall, by all accounts. I judge people first on the merits of being a rational and moral person first and a (in)competent athlete/manager second. That is something positive that I will take out of this tragedy.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:02 PM ^
That's just like your opinion, man. However, you are right, so I should explain. I do not think of Matt Millen as a social commentator. He is a football analyst. My opinion of Matt Millen is my opinion of Matt Millen the football analyst. To say that Matt Millen gained respect is to include Matt Millen in a class of something more than football analyst. However, the OP did not state that Matt Millen gained respect; the OP stated that Matt Millen regained respect. If we agree that this current action reflects something other than football commentary, I think the OP has committed a logical error unless the OP had an opinion of Matt Millen the social commentator. As far as Matt Millen "the guy," I am in no position to critique his private life and will therefore abstain.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:24 PM ^
The same Matt Millen who called a former player a faggot? Is that the great person you are referring to?
November 8th, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
I take it that you have never used a gay slur? And you did so while playing sports your whole life? Not condoning it, as this is another discussion entirely, but the language on any field or court is downright atrocious.
November 9th, 2011 at 2:38 AM ^
Big difference between hanging around with your buddies on the couch and jokingly saying "Don't be a faggot" and angrily screaming "You fucking faggot!" at your place of business and in the public eye.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
I don't know man. Yeah he got emotional. I get emotional, too, when I think about tragedy happening to my kids. Just the other night I woke up from a dead sleep because I dreamed my daughter got hit by a car. I get emotional when I think about bad things happening to children at the hands of men who prey on them.
But Millen sat on the board of Sandusky's foundation. There were reports of incidents happening back in 1998 and again in 2002. Why is Millen getting emotional now? If he wanted to take care of himself, why didn't he do that over the last 9 - 13 years?
November 8th, 2011 at 5:23 PM ^
Why does there have to be this notion that since he was connected with Sandusky in the past, he must have known or otherwise bears some blame?
November 8th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
I think it has to do with reports that the investigation into Sandusky's potential child molestation in 1998 was widely known by people connected to PSU. Considering Millen is on the board, it is reasonable he would know what is going on with Sandusky.
And the guy retired unexpectedly in 1999 in the prime of his career....that sort of thing raises red flags.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
Yeah, because before I thought he would condone child rape based on his being a bad football GM, but now i know he doesn't
/s
/wtf
November 8th, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
Forget millen.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
So Matt Miller doesn't like raping kids. Good for him. I don't like Cancer. Give me a cookie.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:28 PM ^
I don't like raping kids either. I would like it a hell of a lot less if someone who were very, very close to me were damningly accused of it. I think you're making the common mistake of not taking into account the relationship between Sandusky and the other people in the story. Millen's more than just a neutral commentator or bystander and Sandusky isn't just some old guy. Indirectly, Millen and all the people who worshiped Sandusky are victims as well. You think they might have a right to be a little more emotional or freaked out or conflicted than the rest of us?
November 8th, 2011 at 5:39 PM ^
Mostof the people that worshipped Sandusky were "indirect victims", but some others in that category might have been enablers.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
I might not like Millen as a football guy, but I believe he spoke from his heart there.
This issue is a disaster for PSU on many levels. I feel bad for the kids, all of the kids. The kids that were directly affected and the ones that are in the football program now. The whole thing is painful to think about let alone watch unfold.
If it is true, Joe has got to go!
November 8th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
for being against child molestation.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:23 PM ^
Couldn't agree more. He showed everything.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:31 PM ^
Millen hasn't done his due diligence, either. The rumor have been out there for a while--people were talking about it on this board months ago, right?
November 8th, 2011 at 6:04 PM ^
last spring, including the potential coverup by the administrators.
Seems like a lot of people in State College were banking on the GJ not indicting and this thing to just go away.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:51 PM ^
Millen's statement along the lines of "Man's inhumanity to man, where do we stop with this stuff" rings a little untrue after he endorsed the twisting of a defenseless players head by the faskmask.
November 8th, 2011 at 7:45 PM ^
To try and compare a face mask penalty in a football game to the raping of little children.
November 8th, 2011 at 7:51 PM ^
So, how exactly do you draw the conclusion that I am comparing faskmasking to rape?
November 8th, 2011 at 5:53 PM ^
calling out JoePa about his moral obligations as a head coach. Laughed at that one.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:00 PM ^
It was very tough to watch his interview with McKendry earlier when he got choked up. Clearly what has been transpiring in the recent days at Penn State bothers him.
No reason why he has to apologize for being emotional. Now for what he did to the Lions? That's a different story.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:27 PM ^
He's still a guy collecting a paycheck to me. Everyone thinks this is disturbing.
November 8th, 2011 at 6:52 PM ^
He's so upset, that he's going to go home and draft a WR.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:07 PM ^
his supporters have lost all perspective...how can you cheer a man who enabled a serial child rapist
November 8th, 2011 at 9:07 PM ^

November 8th, 2011 at 9:14 PM ^
guess you got that off your chest, off your chest, off your chest.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
Millen still owes the Detroit media an interview for what he did. Period.
November 9th, 2011 at 7:14 AM ^
he was crying on ESPN?? Fuck him...Still hate him, always will hate him....Even if he gave back the millions if dollars he stole I would still hate him...Did I mention that I hate him???
