Students Petitioning for Jay Z and Kanye Halftime Show During Ohio Game
Saw this on Facebook today and figured I would share it with you guys. Please reassure me that this will never happen.
October 4th, 2011 at 2:50 PM ^
This is Fielding Yost. This is Bo. This is Michigan.
Fergodsakes.
October 4th, 2011 at 2:54 PM ^
Yes but stupid students couldn't careless about any of that. They want Pop Evil, Jay Z and Kanye rocking out. As if The Game wasn't entertainment
October 4th, 2011 at 2:56 PM ^
is certainly not welcome in the big house, i will boo if brandon puts them on the field
October 4th, 2011 at 3:00 PM ^
Whoa, whoa, I'm in no way in favor of a J/'Ye halftime show, and Watch the Throne is not at all good, but putting these guys in the same sentence with Pop Evil is like comparing the Rolling Stones to that kid who raps in the Pregaming with Pat videos.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:18 PM ^
What don't you like about Watch the Throne? I think it's pretty good.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:24 PM ^
Frank Ocean saves a couples songs...but it's mostly terrible...especially Kanye. If you want J and Ye just throw in Reasonable Doubt and College Dropout, then you will se what's wrong with Watch the Throne.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:37 PM ^
Well, you're right that it's not on par with each of their respective classics but that's why those albums are classics. I mean, NaS isn't ever gonna come close to Illmatic again but I still like him. WTT is pretty solid all around and New Day is one of the better hip hip songs I've heard.
October 4th, 2011 at 5:17 PM ^
"New Day" and "Lift Off" are both fantastic.
October 4th, 2011 at 4:51 PM ^
Doubt is my best album.
October 4th, 2011 at 5:39 PM ^
Reasonable doubt is a certifiable hip hop classic, but both of these dudes have sold out harder than Ice Cube. I would puke if these lame rappers performed at halftime. I am a Hip hop fan, (def early 90's stuff, rap now sucks), and I would never want any rappers performing at Michigan Stadium, we are Michigan for Christ sakes.
Watch the Throne was terrible, it should have been called Watch us Bone.
October 4th, 2011 at 7:58 PM ^
Michigan would be lucky to have artists of that calibur preform. The Watch the Thrown album covers a wide spectrum lyrically from the godly to the party, from the braggadocios to the socially conscious . Listen to Murder to Excellence, Welcome to the Jungle, New Day . How in the world are these two sell outs? Just because you make lots of money does not make you a sell out. They still put out quality music and Kanye has a history of doing things that would make him less marketable and are musically out of the norm for a rapper. Thats not what sellouts do, these guys set trends.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:35 PM ^
But I honestly expected a lot better after My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I guess that album would be fairly hard to top though.
October 4th, 2011 at 7:14 PM ^
After My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy it's a massive let down. Listening to Watch the Throne is like watching the Miami Heat play basketball after watching LeBron take an otherwise horrible team to the verge of a championship. You desperately want the most talented guy in the world to take over, but he defers to the guy who's like top 5, but a significant step down out of respect for his past accomplishments. And so the whole becomes less than the sum of the parts.
Watch the Throne isn't bad in the same way the Heat aren't bad- relative to the competition, but for what it should be it's almost nauseating.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:48 PM ^
... are much stupider than the stupid students when I was a stupid student at Michigan(!) We would never have let this stupidity fly(!)
October 4th, 2011 at 3:53 PM ^
Apparently you forgot about the time Gary Moeller invited Haddaway and UB40 to play at halftime back in the early '90's. It was epic.
October 4th, 2011 at 4:06 PM ^
I'm pretty sure he forgot the /s.
I remember a petition to get James Earl Jones to be the CRISP lady. It was funny, but it accomplished nothing...
October 4th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
Against Jay Z and Kanye but you find The Game entertaining? Must be a westcoast rap fan...
/s
October 4th, 2011 at 5:42 PM ^
The Game is one of the most boring rappers in "the game". He def is no Aceyalone or Above the Law.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:12 PM ^
we should definitely not do this because you conjecture about bo's attitude towards halftime shows.
damn those "stupid students" and their desire to hear popular music at a football game. "Real" Michigan fans like you know better. keep fighting the good fight.
October 4th, 2011 at 6:06 PM ^
Lemme tell ye' bruthar! No tru' Scotsman would e'er allow such a thing ter desecrate tha hallowed grounds o' Michigan Stadium. No sir! If'n ye' think tha'll e'er happen, yer bum's oot tha windae!
October 4th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
Relax. Even though I would love to see this (and, for that matter, would like to see Brandon allow some big act to play the Big House at some point in the future) there is no way the atheltic dept is going to shell out the dough for this.
Also, from a logistical standpoint. a guy I know who used to work for the Athl Dept until recently once told me that they had been approached before about having a concert in the stadium. One of the biggest (and apparently its a big one) issues is that the only way in or out of the field is the tunnel and the tunnel is very small and would be a logistical nightmare to get all the stage equipment through.
October 4th, 2011 at 8:12 PM ^
Helicopter.
October 4th, 2011 at 2:53 PM ^
There is no dobut, no lingering suspicion, no little bit of gray area, that IMO this is a HORRIBLE idea.
October 4th, 2011 at 2:55 PM ^
Now how about the White stripes?
October 4th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
They broke up.
October 4th, 2011 at 4:51 PM ^
Oh, no. They blew up.
October 4th, 2011 at 2:55 PM ^
This would be absolutely off the charts for recruiting, but I don't see why Jay Z would be interested. (I'd guess Kanye, as a giant attention whore, could probably be gotten.)
Anyway I think this is one where you'd have to ignore the whining of the purists and pay attention to what this would do for the brand. I mean, I object to the corporate monetization of Michigan football in general, but if the effect could be to make us the bar none number 1 brand in the country...hell, let's do it.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:37 PM ^
No....Just NO!.....
October 4th, 2011 at 3:42 PM ^
I understand your objections, but this came to mind as a possible compromise if this does happen (which I don't think it will). What if the band and Jay Z/Kanye collaborated on something? I think the band would enjoy that and I think students would really enjoy that. I submit the following video as something I found cool that also relates:
October 4th, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
If we could get strippers like that it would be better than Jay Z........
October 4th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
Yes recruits come to Michigan where maybe you can sit in the locker room while music groups perform outside. Sure you won't be able to hear it but you'll be close by!
October 4th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
First, I agree that this would be phenomenal for recruiting, which by itself would be enough for me to support this. Second, shouldn't we care what the students want? I can't stand the constant push-back against "new" traditions that appeal to younger fans (mascots, recorded music, etc) in the name of keeping every tradition imaginable for the sake of the older fans.
FWIW, I logged on and signed the petition. Thankfully my username and password still work after all these years.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:59 PM ^
Negging for posting an honest opinion that many people here share? Bush-league.
October 4th, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
Dude, I even kinda agree with you on SOME of your points (definitely not on mascots, seriously, fuck mascots), but if you complain about getting negged, you're just going to get further negged.
October 4th, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
I agree with you though. We had our time. The current students desires should be first and foremost, they after-all will too one day be alums. Don't we want them years from now to look fondly on their time as students, not having felt as though their desires where ever an afterthought?
October 4th, 2011 at 2:56 PM ^
Please god let this happen
October 4th, 2011 at 3:03 PM ^
awesome. I don't understand the negativity. Is it these 2 artists or any artist performing in the Big House at halftime? BTW, Please don't lump in Pop Evil with Jay/ Kanye.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:18 PM ^
You're commenting on a blog where people panic when we talk about possibly wearing white pants. You think those people listen to rap?
October 4th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
I'd be open to white pants, but not after Labor Day.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
It's just too bad that the football season starts on Labor Day weekend.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
I know your not refering to Jay Z and Kanye as "Artists" com'on man your better than that..
October 4th, 2011 at 7:31 PM ^
Herpy derp mcflerp derp.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:52 PM ^
You remember that last Super Bowl halftime show that was awesome and didn't take way too long? Yeah I don't either. Every player says they hate having to wait longer to get back to the game I think it's a stupid idea. Concerts and football games are perfectly fine as separate events.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:17 PM ^
GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DAMN KIDS!
October 4th, 2011 at 2:56 PM ^
It'll never happen, Michigan Stadium is not big enough to hold Kanye's ego.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:00 PM ^
and it's the Michigan Marching Band. Now if they want to play a Jay-Z/Kanye show, that would be ok. But no rappers. And no Pop Evil.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
i disagree, i think Kanyesus should perform before the game, at halftime, and after the game
October 4th, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
I think the Michigan game should take place during intermission of the Kanyesus concert, time permitting of course.
October 4th, 2011 at 3:46 PM ^
The bad needs to get smarter during the game. They shouldn't be playing Temptation after a 3rd down while the team is clearly going for it on 4th down. This induces students into chanting "you suck" while we get a 4th down converted on our assess.
