U of M builds fastest human-like robot
Nice work, nerds.
(Of course, human-like robots won't get really fast until they're built by roboticists in SEC engineering departments.)

August 17th, 2011 at 7:12 PM ^
Wait a minute....I see what you did there.
August 17th, 2011 at 7:10 PM ^
Was fearing Denard's eligibility might be in question.
August 17th, 2011 at 7:10 PM ^
Denard is incredibly fast, but calling him a "human-like robot" seems unfair.

"Not the biggest DB on the field"........my only problem with this evaluation
August 17th, 2011 at 7:11 PM ^
So it begins...
/gonna load up on duct tape and bullets
// and will smith movies.
August 17th, 2011 at 7:41 PM ^
I wonder how many people will click on this thread just to make a Denard joke... then realize they aren't as clever as they thought.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
Wait til they add dreds.
August 17th, 2011 at 7:19 PM ^
instantly thought of star wars.

I've seen this several times but it still freaks me out/amazes me every time I see it
August 17th, 2011 at 9:54 PM ^
If you want to get freaked out, check this:
August 17th, 2011 at 7:18 PM ^
Ok, but how's it's pad level?
August 17th, 2011 at 8:50 PM ^
..and does it have hips on a swivel? Since it's a robot, the answer might be a literal "yes."
August 17th, 2011 at 11:31 PM ^
On a side note, why hasn't the "Hello: Michigan Robot" post been inducted into the Hall of Fame? It's easily the funniest thing posted since the Lloyd Brady epic photoshop thread.
August 17th, 2011 at 11:45 PM ^
I just put it in; I had assumed it was there for a while. It's now under "humor" "mechanized recruiting". IIRC anyone with 500 MGoPoints should be able to edit it.
August 17th, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
looks pretty creepy. Very Impressive none the less.
August 17th, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
Only a minute and a half long so not sure if thread worthy, but still good for anyone who needs a fix. Some practice footage from yesterday:

For Manball we seem to run quite a bit of no-contact scrimmages.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:00 PM ^
hopefully the no-contact part is intentional.
August 17th, 2011 at 8:46 PM ^
Freaky...,kind of neat but still freaky.
Reminded me of Star Wars and the Terminator.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:22 PM ^
Coincidence that this immediately follows a board post about Henne?
August 17th, 2011 at 9:27 PM ^
on the B1G commercial. I thought it was CG. Very nice.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:28 PM ^
In the SEC?
August 17th, 2011 at 10:50 PM ^
Someone's got to be ready to brew moonshine for the next generation.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:28 PM ^
the nerds. The football team already has had a couple more advanced robots than that thing. /yawn It can't even run a 2 minute offense. Call me when it can at least .nailcoeds.exe
August 17th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
... and it feels good. If Dave Brandon really wants a mascot, this should be it. A twenty foot tall transformer like entity that patrols the concourse outside the stadium and takes pictures with kids. It can also kick the shit out of anyone who is smoking and take away everyone's water bottles. It would be sick.
Edit: An alternative design would be RoboCop with wings on his helmet. If anyone wants to photoshop that and send it to Dave Brandon, that would be sweet.
August 17th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
my twitter avatar, did you?
August 17th, 2011 at 10:12 PM ^
Email it to Dave Brandon immediately.

I had Prof. Grizzle for EECS 316 during my undergrad days. Brilliant guy, excellent teacher, and very down to earth and easy to speak with. Great to see that he is doing great things.
August 18th, 2011 at 12:45 AM ^
I worked on a project with him when I was in grad school. Unfortunately, it wasn't as cool as killer robots, but I agree with your comments, and I'm also glad to see he is still doing great things.
August 17th, 2011 at 11:24 PM ^
This is pretty impressive but this robot isn't free standing like Honda's ASIMO. I watched a live demonstration of ASIMO and I was pretty blown away.
August 18th, 2011 at 12:37 AM ^
FWIW, this is a project funded by DARPA, and the resulting research will likely play a role in a number of future (classified & unclassified) technological achievements. We as an institution should be proud of the groundbreaking achievements made by our university.

but it runs like a girl.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:18 AM ^
but it runs better than Threet or Sheridan ever did. And it doesn't even have a head!

...is in the Michigan ad that airs on the BTN all the time, the one with the music that isn't The Victors, but has samples from it. I'll see if I can find it.
edit:
It's there at 0:18. The description says the ad 1st aired in 2009.
