Im saying right now our defense will be top 30 in the nation ... Will Campbell will be a beast
I feel the same way. A lot of people forget that running a fast offense racks up a lot of yards on your defense. Just changing from that jet tempo will lower defensive yardage. Combine that with the improved mechanics, Mattison, T-woolf, not having to rely on frosh, Mike Martin, Slim Will, no more 3-3-5 crap ... I think we'll be in the top half of the Big Ten defensively; possibly top third.
into the yardage totals, head over to Football Outsiders, read up on FEI, and find a much more effective way of looking at the performance of defenses and offenses.
Or just watch any game from last year. That should tell you everything you need rovings about how bad we were. In particular, watch OSU, Wisconsin and he gator bowl.

I don't know why people need to look at complicated stats and metrics to figure out things that are obvious.
Ha. Yes, watch games against 3 out of our 4 toughest opponents who had a combined record of 31-6 to tell you everything you need to know about our team last year.

If I recall correctly, we had 2 weeks to game prep for Penn State last year, and their walk-on QB was starting his first game. They tore us up pretty good. I don't think our defense was very good last year.

I think you would have a very hard time finding someone who thought our defense played well last year in any game that wasn't Purdue or UConn.
Our defense didn't play particularly well for the UConn game either. UConn shot themselves in the foot more than we stopped them. I'm glad we will see better defense this year!

Or you could watch the Illinois game, or Sparty, or UMASS...

Oh I wasn't suggesting our defense was good last year. I was suggesting that you can make anything look bad when you only look at games you play against two 11-1 teams that both went to BCS bowls and a 9 win SEC team. I do find it funny you pointed to 2 wins and a loss to another 11-1 team.
I lost my mind on those 3 & forever "soft zones" ... uggghhh
That's one thing you can't lay exclusively at the feet of RR. The soft zones on third-and-forever have been a consistent "feature" of our defenses since Bo was coach. They were a frequently infuriating aspect of our defenses under Carr, too, with the exception of 1997.
What makes it worse is that those soft zones on third down have frequently been accompanied by three-man fronts that put absolutely no pressure on the QB, allowing him ample time to find open receivers underneath our coverage.
@freepwolverines: UM C David Molk on difference in practices: "less yelling... Coach Rod was a yeller. Great guy but liked to yell."
@chengelis Woolfolk on why D will be better: "because of one word -- intensity"
@mikerothstein Van Bergen's specialty cooking food: "pineapple glazed salmon."
I saw nothing on the main board yet, and I have had tweets rolling in. Figured I'd give the MGoMasses something to feed our appetites.
I was wondering where all the updates were considering this was the first day of practice... And for those of us who dont tweet we need the updates on here so thanks and keep posting
I'm bored, sitting around my house. Got my Twitter open. If you keep refreshing this thread, I'll keep updating if any relevant tweets come through.
Yeah 342 was a lot of person.
Thanks for the information. The news on Will Campbell's weight is good news indeed. Van Bergen's diet is amazing. I'd turn into a blimp in a week with that number of calories!
but Chengelis said on her Twitter account that RVB looks leaner, even with the added weight.
these things, thanks for the news. I think this team is going to surprise some people this year.
Unrelated, but can't create a new topic. The ND game from last year is currently being played on the new scoreboard. Looks pretty good.
excited about these new scoreboards. It was much needed.
Is anyone else starting to get concerned about the progress with the scoreboards? They've barely started on the back paneling of the south end scoreboard and they still have paneling to go on the north end. I feel they might be cutting it close before Sept. 3.
They're deliberately not paneling it up in case they find errors, etc with the board itself. It gives the workers more light and space to work in while fixing what matters. Securing premade panels to the back of the frame will take less than a week. Likely a couple days if you run two shifts on it.
Oh good, that makes sense and is reassuring to hear.
looks like the old nautique id skieed behind a coouple times at jepawhit
It's a Super Air Nautique 220 followed by a Ski Nautique (if you look closely under the top of the 1st boat you can see the 2nd boat).

thought thats what it was.
Does anyone have a link to the stadium cam, I dont see it on Mgoblue now?
Damn you watching multiple videos before posting!!
Thanks!
So if the reports of Roh weighing 270 are correct, and assuming Mike Martin weighs about the same as last year, our DL will weigh 290-300-318-270 across the line. That is a massive defensive line.
For you sociology majors, that's 294.5lbs per player. Some teams' biggest D-lineman doesn't weigh that much.
but I'd love to see a comparison to the last few years of DL size. Seems awful big for a typical DL.
Last year, our three DL to start the season were RVB (283), MM (299) and Greg Banks (285, I think). When Roh came up and we went 4 down, Roh added 251. Obviously this is much better.
Go to Rivals top 120 countdown and look at their depth charts. Not many teams will stack up to us in this department. Then again, out guys' weights in there are out of date, so mosy other teams' are too.
I had a class with Craig Roh this past winter semester, and dude was eating ALL the time. He brought all kinds of like powerbars, things like that. He's gonna be a monster on the line.
It's great that Big Will is losing weight, he'll definitly be faster and more agile. But the thing that worried me the most about Will from the past two seasons and the spring game was his pad level...he'd get too high and the o-line man would get a hold of him and he'd be done. If he improves that, than he could be one of the best comeback stories ever and one of the great Michigan interior lineman.
that gives me great hope with BWC going forward, it's that he has Hoke and Mattison, who are DL specialists, to help teach.
Don't forget DL coach Jerry Montgomery, whom (who?) Hoke described as "tremendous" about five times
Campbell should be getting a lot of instruction. If he doesn't pan out at this point, it's gonna be his own doing.
pretty sure it's "whom" since Montgomery is the object being described.
That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. I thought I would sound like an idiot if I tried to be fancy and say "whom" if I was wrong.. So I had to put that little disclaimer. Thanks!
Lose the gut and it becomes easier to bend at the waist. Also as players get fatigued, technique tends to go out the door. His weight has been holding him back since he set foot on campus. The talent has always been there, it is nice to see the staff bringing the best out in him.
Very good news, and very helpful for those of us without the twitter.
Nice to see that we'll have a monster DL, but the speed of Campbell and Woolfolk is the most exciting for me. We need those guys to step up
Wow awesome news with Big Will. I can't wait for the season to start!
It has to be comforting for Big Will to know, if he can't handle the job, all he has to do it let Coach Mattison know. Initial reports are Big Will responded well to the challenge. This will be one of the more interesting stories to follow this season. I'm pulling for you big fella.
we now know who the school is in the "10 story" on Yahoo!Sports. You aren't going to believe it:
