SI's Stewart Mandel: tsio's sanctions are enough
Mandel is a decent writer and I certainly hope he is wrong on this one, but it is an interesting an different take than what has been posted here recently.
I am waiting for the other shoe to drop, weren't there supposed to be new allegations coming in August according to the Yahoo! article early this summer?
How pretty is he?
I don't listen to guys with more than 3 chins. Sorry Stewart.
Sports writers: "Morans" when they disagree with you, geniuses when they don't.
Mandel is wrong. My concern is if the NCAA doesn't modify their list to include more recently exposed stuff. I mean what is the point of doing an "investigation" if you don't bother using the stuff you turn up?
They'd have to start over. There's no "double jeopardy" concerns with the NCAA; they can proceed with what they've already charged, and serve a new Notice of Allegations on the new stuff whenever they have enough to proceed.
What are the chances that they would bring a new round of charges, though? Has it ever happened? Seems more likely that they'll make the penalties a little tougher than they would have otherwise been and move on.
(which probably isn't much), the OSU people don't sound like they expect the NCAA to modify the allegations.
The Ohio people didn't expect the NCAA to get this far, either. This stonewalling could work against them. If the other violations are treated as a separate case, I believe it would constitute another repeat violation, and subject them to what they actually deserve.
I think you hit this squarely; Ohio never saw any of this coming and they've been trying to put the genie back into the lamp for months now. They didn't perceive that anything would come of the issue in December when they convinced the NCAA to allow the Tat 5 to play in the bowl game, they didn't perceive their coach needed any more than a 2 game suspension, they didn't see the 'new information' that compelled Tressel to jump coming (hell, 13 days before at the B1G meetings the AD totally had Tressel's back). Ohio's administration is delusional and having beat back the NCAA last December they must be feeling that some mild rationalization is all that's indicated.
At the end of the day the thing that's going to get them is not the rogue Tressel concerns but the extra benefits to those players.
NOT A STRONG TAKE.
Gordon Gee needs to be publicly flogged.
"The penalities seem light......"
As compared to what? Being rewarded? These so-called "penalities" are lighter than steam.
Almost as pretty as Howie Mandel
Coaches don't get fired and your starting QB bolts town because of vacated wins and probation. This lame attempt was made for appeasing recruits not the NCAA, with whom they should be pretty damn concerned about. When reporters can pop in town for a few weeks and uncover what they have, this is an institutional failure from the top down. At this point either you are that bad at your job or you are looking the other way. Ignorance, last time I checked, is not a viable defense against allegations.
Scale of 1-10
you should check out the commentary on bucknuts....generally they think the penalty was too HARSH...its great for a quick laugh
Exactly. If probation is the only penalty they'll have going forward, that's gonna be the only thing keeping them cheating again. If they don't have meaningful punishments that stick with them as they move forward, there are no incentives to obey the rules.
They deserve a shot in the nuts, not red pen in the recordbook.
when the real sanctions are handed down. Their response to this is a joke, I wouldn't even call this a slap on the wrist, more like a pat on the head and off you go. I'm afraid they are going to be in for a rude awakening in the near future!
Forgive the pessimism, but I think the NCAA's history of ignoring Buckey indiscretions + $$$ OSU brings in = a stern talking to and finger-wagging from the NCAA. I will believe the NCAA comes down on the Buckeyes when I see it happen. I don't think they have the balls. The Bow Tie must have have some great naked pictures from an NCAA office party he holds over their heads whenever he needs.
Mandel is kind of a troll. He's just being a contrarian.
Aren't penalties supposed to exist to prevent the breaking of rules?.
If all they lose by getting caught breaking the rules is losing what they won by breaking the rules how does that prevent or warn other teams about the consequences of cheating?
To me is like robbing a bank and returning everything without having to go to jail
It''s more like robbing a bank, spending all of the money on consumables, and then pretending that you didn't and apologizing without giving any of the money back.
a stupid question and I know none of us would ever take pride in this...But 50 years from now (if these sanctions are the only ones handed down) would the record books show that Michigan beat tsio in 2010? Just curious how do vacated wins go down in the books?
OSU will lose the win but Michigan doesn't gain one. I'm 100% sure of that. I'm 75% sure that Michigan will gain in winning percentage for the 2010 season by becoming 7-5 instead of 7-6.
Our record will not change, because to do otherwise would punish us as well. Our players (as far as we know) lawfully participated in the game and their participation will not be wiped out. Imagine if that had been the only game you appeared in all season, only to be told afterward that it would be stricken from the record. Even as a loss, you'd never want to see that happen. Plus, the NCAA is not going to go to the trouble of changing 13 teams' official season records and statistics.
How does taking away an L to tsio in our record book punish us? Changing 13 teams records wouldn't be that hard, would it?
Vacated means that OSU simply gives up its wins. Forfieting would award a win to another team. We didn't beat OSU in 2010.
So do we get an L or nothing at all?
Psssht
That's a great picture of Coach Fickle in your avatar there.
Seriously tho this is an attempt to stop the bleeding in recruiting. Vacating wins is an after thought penalty. If you where at the game or watched them on T.V and saw the final score , who cares if somebody says nope you did'nt win it.
tsio probably paid him off.
Fuck him.
BTN airing 1981 OSU- Stanford right now. Big tackle was just made by . . . Chris Cicero. I'll bet that kid turns out to be a bang-up lawyer and proud Bucks supporter when his playing days are done.
brilliant
brilliant
double post fail
I don't think he has any left.
I want what Mandel is smokin
Dude, you're just going to have ask him.
Mandel is a moron. Even if you ingore everything besides what is in the original NOA to OSU, the NCAA typically imposes penalties on a two-to-one ratio. OSU cheated by using five ineligible players for a year and then the coach lied about it multiple times. What's the two-fer on those infractions? Five schollies for two years and a two year bowl ban.
Wow...With these self-imposed sanctions by Ohio, I might have to look back at the decision to can RR as a raw deal. I mean...he didn't lose to 2 of our 3 biggest rivals and we still fired him? Might want to go back and reconsider.
i think it's ridiculous that the university is putting the blame solely on tressel and saying it's not an institutional problem and at the same time the fanbase is celebrating tressel and treating him like he's the victim of a few bad apples. MORANS!!!
