Zettel Announces Tonight
Saw this on the Sparty board, but not over here yet. If it's already been posted, I apologize, but I didn't see it.

but maybe there's another angle. it could be possible that if he commits now, he could bolster the current recruiting class and thus have some positive influence on the coaching decision - keeping RR. just a thought.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
Great thought, but I doubt it. However, whether he commmits for us or elsewhere, there is bound to be more CC's about what he knew that drove his decision.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:57 AM ^
I would consider announcing 4 days before a potential coaching change if I wanted RR to stay and I was a great commit. This is very good strategic timing. His announcement may just be: "I'm committing to Michigan since I like the program and I like RR." If RR leaves, then he can open up his recruitment again. Easy. Sure, the extra pressure to keep RR may not sway DB to keep him, but by the definition of "extra", it is more than not adding any pressure. And sure, other possibilities are that he's going elsewhere or is comitting to Michigan "The Program" but doesn't care about the coach.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:50 AM ^
I was just about to type. I think it's possible, but not probable. :(
December 28th, 2010 at 11:01 AM ^
Notwithstanding the coaching uncertainty, you would think he would go to Iowa or PSU.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:30 AM ^
Especially given both PSU's and Iowa's prowess in developing d-linemen in the past few years.
December 28th, 2010 at 12:31 PM ^
Mike Martin has looked okay, of late.
December 28th, 2010 at 12:47 PM ^
A hot Girlfriend. Let's hope that isn't the case...However, how does that song go...something CONTROL!!!
What a terrible mistake if so.
I'm just going to think positive and good things will happen.
Go Blue...Come on Big Z!
December 28th, 2010 at 10:30 AM ^
Michigan is a very powerful place and for many, way bigger than any coach. This is a young man who grew up loving the team under another coach, but has shown he also really likes the current coach.
Having seen him in person, his skill sets will transfer to any system on any team. If he loves Michigan and has ultimate confidence we'll be excellent no matter what, that could still be more than enough.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:32 AM ^
...what to think. I think Zettel was a Blue lean...but why decide this week, when you can wait 7 days and know for sure? If he commits to us...he is all Blue, regardless, and will be beloved. But I dont know...agree with the above poster, I am not mentally prepared for this today.
December 28th, 2010 at 12:52 PM ^
It might be as simple as there's out of town family around and he's told them his decision and figures that before it leaks, he might as well get a few minutes of attention.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:32 AM ^
Someone from the west side of the state go to that restaurant and steal all non-UM hats and decorate it in maize & blue.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
I had a Springer like Holiday season and this could really cheer me up.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:06 AM ^
Something like this?
December 28th, 2010 at 11:31 AM ^
The family restaurant is in West Branch (not the west side of the state). I do have a friend who lives there I'll see if she can drop by and remove some non-M hats.
December 28th, 2010 at 12:33 PM ^
I'm in West Branch a fair bit...what restaurant is it that they own?
December 28th, 2010 at 12:41 PM ^
On M-55 and I-75. look for the huge "This is Sparty country" sign. MSU put that up just down the road from the restaurant.
December 28th, 2010 at 1:00 PM ^
Mac's restaurant. I've never been there, but I guess it's kind of on the west side of town on the north side of M-55.

Mac's Place, I believe.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:02 PM ^
Mac's Place
December 28th, 2010 at 7:00 PM ^
The restaurant is not on the west side of the state. It is in the geographical center of the state.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:33 AM ^
Considering he is a Michigan guy, high 4-star and D-Lineman, I would find it hard not to argue that he is our top priority right now.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:38 AM ^
Thought we were recruiting him at OL? Thats what the recruiting board has him pegged as...
December 28th, 2010 at 10:40 AM ^
better chance of DE over OL. Especially if we get Bryant.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:40 AM ^
The recruiting board isn't always up to date. Plus, with someone of Zettel's abilities, we'll let him come in and start at whichever position he wants (which will most likely be on the defensive line).
December 28th, 2010 at 10:36 AM ^
EDIT: I had a Hans Solo picture ready but it didn't work.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:40 AM ^
Dreisbach, you are probably more nervous than RR. LOL. I like it, I know how much you care about recrutiing. Just remember, if he goes elsewhere, and RR is retained, there is always a chance he can switch back to us.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
...could Zettel been one of those silent commits that have been rumored? I didn't think so, but one can hope...
December 28th, 2010 at 10:45 AM ^
A few people thought so. It's not impossible, but the silent commits are pretty much expected to wait until AFTER the coaching situation is resolved to announce
December 28th, 2010 at 10:42 AM ^
Relax, our helmets got wings.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:44 AM ^
...Michigan will be well-coached at OL or DL over the next five years, and only Penn State can match us academically.
Michigan:
- well-coached, perhaps competing for B10 titles, national titles
- best academic school on his list
- close to home
None of the other schools on his list have all three. Even ignoring his emotional allegiance to M, if he's rational, he's Blue.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:48 AM ^
Minor quibble: I don't think Penn State can match UMich academically. I'd be surprised if they outranked it in more than a handful of areas. I think they're equally close to Sparty.
I agree with the rest of your post.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:51 AM ^
It's not in the same league. PSU is a fine school, but it's not in the same league as UM...
December 28th, 2010 at 11:28 AM ^
Iowa and PSU are pretty equivalent academically. Both are one tier down from Michigan.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:03 PM ^
There isnt any school that competes with UM in all areas: undergrad, grad, athletics, quality of life. UM has it all, including a few hot chicks contrary to popular belief.
December 28th, 2010 at 12:07 PM ^
Yeah, I'd say Northwestern is closer than PSU
December 28th, 2010 at 12:21 PM ^
Northwestern is our superior.
December 28th, 2010 at 1:43 PM ^
Depends on the major.
December 28th, 2010 at 2:55 PM ^
As good as Northwestern is, it is not as good as Michigan either overall or in a great many majors. In fact, I cannot recall ever seeing an overall ranking that placed Northwestern above Michigan.
December 28th, 2010 at 3:42 PM ^
...the most cited source for college rankings is US News & World Report and the latest rankings are Northwestern 12, Michigan 29.
Argue validity all you want, those are the actual rankings.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:25 AM ^
" perhaps competing for B10 titles, national titles"
I am all for optimism, but after the past three years, and the fact that we lost pretty handily to ALL of the better schools that we played, I think that this may be a bit much. If we are perhaps competing for B10 and national titles than the schools that we are up against for this kid - Iowa, MSU, PSU - all of whom beat us pretty handily must also be able to make this claim and can do so with more credibility.
As for well coached, that's a hard argument to make when we don't know who that coach will be.
But, I agree that our academics are the best on the list.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:25 AM ^
It has been noted that he grew up a Michigan fan, so there's that. Not insignificant ...
I wonder where he is academically? Is he someone for whom UMich would ultimately make a big difference? (I'm of the opinion that, for some athletes, the difference between the two schools wouldn't matter much. If you're hawking ball bearings / axels, schmoozing is more important than intellectual virtuosity, right? The same idea would apply to other occupations that would be heavier on street smarts than book smarts.) Is he, say, a Zac Ciullo type?
Also, when you consider his hometown (a big speck on the map in that part of the world but still relatively tiny at 2K or so of population), MSU might be a better cultural fit. I've been all over the state and I've found that smaller, out-of-the-way places tend to have a Sparty flavor. (That wouldn't explain his supposed life-long UMich fandom.) He'd find more people of his background in East Lansing.
When the "coaching instability" (such as it is) is considered, he might just as well head elsewhere.
Anyway, I hope he goes blue. Sounds like a difference-maker ...

We had Zettel's last official visit. So we had the ability to get in the last impression from a visit standpoint.
I just find it hard to believe that we would get the last visit, be his favorite since the beginning, and still lose out before the coaching decision is made. Would be an enormous upset in my mind, but again the timing concerns me.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:52 AM ^
I hope he goes Blue. That would make this week even better. But one is not so sure...

"The power of pimp hand compels you. The power of pimp hand compels you."
December 28th, 2010 at 11:02 AM ^
As a frequent visitor of the Zettel family establishment over the years, as I own a cottage in the area, Anthony's folks have made it no secret that they would like Anthony to attend The University of Michigan. They value the education he would be getting first and foremost, but the family are Michigan fans, and it has been a dream of theirs since Anthony has become a Michigan level recruit that he would continue his academic and football career at the University of Michigan.
However, his coach does not think that Michigan is the best fit for him as it stands currently, and in my opinion, this, as well as the CC, has caused the delay in Anthony's recruitment based on my own conversations with Anthony's Mom and Dad.
They are letting Anthony make his own decision though, so we shall see how much their opinion as influenced Anthony's decision.

Quality insight man, thanks
December 28th, 2010 at 11:10 AM ^
Great insight. It's family vs. coach. I wonder who has more influence. Now, let's get to the real question. How is the food at the restaurant. Is it worth a trip?
