Would Mattison go to OSU ?

Submitted by Magga Saraivah on

There is actually a post over at Bucknuts hoping that Michigan cleans house this week so that they can hire Greg Mattison as their Defensive Coordinator. At first I laughed at this idea,  but I know Mattison worked for Urban Meyer back in Florida and are probably still friends.

I think there is a good chance this might happen if/when Hoke gets fired and if the new Coach does not retain him. OSU seems unhappy with their defense and what better way to solve their problem and stick it to us at the same time.

I am hoping he goes back to the NFL or decides to retire rather than ending up in Columbus

Awesome, more hypotheticals. Now we have to debate about where our has been assistants are headed as well? Can we please stop worrying about what people might do after we decide we don't have a need for them anymore? Maybe we should turn off football on this board until a new coach is installed. It's been basketball season for like 3 weeks now, concentrate on that.

Suck a fat one? You mean like his D did against Rutgers and Maryland? Or OSU or Minnesota? Seriously when did his D do anything this year? His D hasnt stopped one decent offense. My god youre delusional.

10 years ago, possible/probably? He does have a working relationship with Urban but I think he's much more likely to retire in Ann Arbor than he is to go to Columbus. His daughter and her family leave nearby right? I think he'll hang up the clipboard

Lol wut. Mattison is more likely to retire and stay near his granddaughter and family in Michigan that he has talked so much about in the past rather than movie and start in Columbus. And if so, I wouldn't be scared based on the results we've seen. He did a great job getting us back to average (rather than awful) but his defenses have gotten worse every year and fold like a cheap tent against every team with a good offense.

If they want the same guy who couldn't figure out that the Buckeyes couldn't stretch the field once Barrett went out and still didn't load the box, more power to them.  Today was just a reminder that even though our head coach is a defensive mind and our defensive coordinator is supposedly one of the best in his field, the defense has not been good enough, even when the offense has been.

just like I like Hoke a a person, but our defense, like the rest of the team, is in bad need of an upgrade. Position coches and coordinator alike. Sorry, but if he were toleave I would expect a much improved defense under a Harbaugh or Miles led team.  The evidence is there.

I stated in the snowflake thread that our top ten defensive ranking is just so misleading. We built some inflated statistics up against the many bad offenses in the Big Ten. Though we got exposed for what we really were against most decent offensive teams. As far as us really having one of the tenth best defenses in the country, like they use to say in the old cartoons. DON’T YOU BELIEVE IT!!!

Just as long as we upgrade substantially the HC position over Hoke! It seem Mattison defense was better with less talented players in 2011. His defenses seem to give up a lot of yards, never get much pressure on opposing QBs and the secondary is often sive like! A lot of 3rd and longs have been converted. I would say overall we just have an average defense!

SO I don't see why he wouldn't go to Columbus if he decides to keep coaching. He's a guy used to working with top notch facilities, so it's another blue blood, NFL team or retirement. He didn't come back to Michigan because he's some true blue Wolverine.

Guy's a merc. A merc with a buddy who is a crap head coach.

You do realize that we gave up 28 points in the second half to OSU, right?  If they took Mattison, that would be great for us in terms of being able to upgrade our defense and beat an OSU team with its own perennially underachieving defense.

Keep mattison and Nuss, just get rid of everybody else above and below them. Nuss needs more than a year, mattison has good relations with the harbaugh clan (if he is the hire) get all new assistants, line coach rb coach etc.

The only way to keep them is to extend Hoke for another 5 years. I guess we have to do it as it is the ONLY way to keep this fabulous assistant coaching staff intact. I would not pay Hoke one penny over $7 mil a year though, need to send him a strong message.....

People forget this is the same guy that bailed on Michigan after the Ohio State game in 1996 to go to Notre Dame. Out of the blue, he's heading to South Bend. I don't think that happens now, but I wouldn't be surprised.
