USC willing to pay $6M/year for Football HC

Submitted by The Geek on

According to an ESPN report here, USC (Pat Haden) is going to smash the piggy-bank to get a big-name head coach. Thought this was interesting as we collectively ponder changes.

One industry source told me this week that USC is willing to extend an offer of up to $6 million a year to get its man. Yes, that’s more than Nick Saban makes (for now).

Good for them.  With their recruiting base I expect them to compete with Bama, the SEC, OSU and other programs doing what it takes to be elite.

But they may find that it's not really money that the elite coaches are after.  A lot of them are pretty happy where they are.  Money is actually more of an issue for assistants.

They could throw Money at Les...but he is a step below Saban. Only coach on Saban's level right now is Meyer unless Harbaugh is really money hungry.

And this is not anti-OSU bias.  Saban is at a different level than all of them.  Meyer is second, then the rest of the field.  Guy is going for his 3rd title in a row, 4th in 5 years.  Has won everywhere, even at MSU.  Meyer is really, really good, but lest we forget how quickly he cut and ran when the Saban machine was rolling at Bama.  Family this, and health that....he was getting out recruited and out-coached by probably the one guy in the business that could do it to him.

Johnny Football is leaving, he can live in Manhattan Beach instead of College Station, and SC will pay him 6 mill...and he is their first choice right now. That said I love Coach O and the home games against Stanford and UCLA may put Haden in a pickle if they win both.

That's almost impossible to believe. It sounds like a preemptive "sour grapes" statement because he knows Haden wants to make a huge hire. By huge hire I mean the hottest or biggest name coach he can find. And frankly, there aren't many coaches who would likely turn down that kind of money at a school like So. Cal.

No, this is a definite misquote.

Orgeron was interviewed just this morning and made it clear he wants to be HC.  He said it has been his dream since he was a kid to be USC's coach and that he hopes Haden is watching because every game he is making his case.  He hinted that he might be willing to stay on in a lesser role because he loves SC so much, but he would certainly prefer to keep the job.

Given his performance, Coach O could easily land another head coaching job after this season. He's given several interviews saying that being a head coach is his life's dream and he though Ole Miss had ruined that for him. Maybe someone like Washington calls if Sarkisian bolts or Utah if they decide to part ways with Whittingham's falling star.

I've heard Sumlin is their top choice. 2nd was Jack Del Rio.

Another guy high on the list was the Clemson OC (but that was before the FSU thrashing).

For my $, I think Mike Tomlin would make the worlds best college coach. I don't think he's close to leaving Pittsburgh, but I think he'd be amazing in the college ranks.

it's pressure. The expectations at Alabama are nothing less than a national Championship. That would not be too bad if he was in any conference other than the SEC. Too many good teams and recruiting is fierce.

Meyer knew this and he bailed on FL claiming health issues. He jumped to the B1G and is undefeated in 19 games. He doesn't have to face several top ten teams each year and he can recruit lesser players and be very competitive.

Saban going to the B12 would face lesser competition and have a huge recruiting area to draw top players.

Speaking of coaching salaries, Hoke is the 8th highest paid coach in the nation and look what we got for our money.

$6M for a UNIVERSITY to pay ONE GUY A YEAR.  I know, private school... until Alabama pays more....

The argument is, whomever Mr. Six Million Dollar Man is, he'll bring in more than $6M -- by multiples -- in terms of donations, licensing, and general goodwill for the U.  But its just obscene that an organization supposedly for the public good and education -- and located in the middle of a slum -- pays all that to one guy.  Then he'll have an OC and DC each prolly over $1M/yr, etc.

Not to mention ,his multiple all-star players won't get a dime of it....

Maybe its because our own program has gotten so pathetic, that I'm no longer blinded by the victories my alma mater produces.  The drug of victory is worn off ,and I can see the real world...and frankly, it's ugly.

What does USC's location matter?

Are you implying that it's OK for us to pay Hoke and Beilein seven figures because we aren't located in a slum?  (It's worth noting that $4 million, which we pay Hoke, probably goes further in SE Michigan than $6 million does in Los Angeles, given the cost of living in each place.)

Well calculations just based on COL wouldn't be the full story behind wage differences between the two cities. You should also include QOL, quality of life, when determining differences between cities. LA is a pretty shitty city to live in with smog and traffic etc when compared with Ann Arbor. True there is a much higher COL in LA but that wouldn't even necessitate a 2 million dollar raise, more like 1.1 million but the QOL differences would decrease that amount as well.

Have you lived in LA?  I didn't like it at first but it grows on you.  Nice weather, beaches, culturally diverse, surprising amount of arts, places that aren't closed at 10 PM.  And if you're making $6 million a year, more interesting things available for you to do than if you were to live in A2.

Some coaches are worth a lot of $.

College football is now 2nd to the nfl is popularity. When you're taking in billions per year, undoubtedly your marquee programs are going to shell out top dollar to compete.

What jobs do you think are better than USC? USC, Texas, ND, Michigan, 'Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma....are all places that sell themselves. There is no one place to coach that is better than the other. I could see maybe an argument that a recruiting base could swing an opinion but USC is in Southern Cal fergodsakes.

Teams like ohio, texas, schools in Florida, and schools in Cali are already better because of the in state high school talent,

Michigan is not a great job because there is an unrealistic history to compete with and the academic selectivity doesn't help coaches either.

Best 3 jobs IMO: Texas, USC, OSU
