Some things getting out there that line up with my post below. Just remember that certain players will get rested at certain times throughout camp. Taking care of previous injuries etc. In addition, there are always a few experiments. Oh, don't forget about player "X" looking like superman. It varies from practice to practice.

JKP and Gray both ran with the ones yesterday. Remember, he was running with the ones during 7-0n-7's this summer. DPJ sat out. Gil is dinged up, so Glasgow stepped in. McKeon, Uche, Bell, Jeter, Hawkins, Sainristil, Collins, Black, Ross, Bredeson, Ruiz, Onwenu, and Shea get mentioned repeatedly. That is when you can really start to trust the reports. Danna has been mentioned more and more. RB still reminds of CB. Up to 4 guys getting serious looks even though I think it is truly 3 from I get. RB won't be settled for some time yet. Thomas (TBD). No real change from what we knew before camp started.

Not worthy of a new thread, but this is a great place to drop some program information. A friend of mine that is very close to the program visited with staff, former players and donors last Thursday and Friday. And Saturday. He came away with these thoughts.

Recruiting was in great shape and functioning at a high level. They are getting the guys they want that are on their boards. Harbaugh has created a great staff and analysts that are very tight and provide the creativity and coaching prowess to win at a high level.

General feelings about the team/players were that there is more energy and effort. The leadership is very strong and they are leading by example. The vibe was that Captains have to be committed to playing all 13 games or more to be selected. The offense looked more explosive to him while he was watching. He does attend several practices every year.

As for just this particular practice, Josh Uche stood out and he said he expects a big year from him. He went on to say that the defense does indeed look very fast and talk of a step back for the DL is not quite accurate. He noticed Ben Mason looking good as a back-up and that Vilain was healthy. He thought the Safety play looked good, and jumped right to CB. Stating that Thomas is needed back ASAP. DJ Turner and Jalen Perry received a mention.

Josh Ross was a standout, but he mentioned that Barrett is a name to watch. He singled out Glasgow for a great practice and said the LB position is very deep and talented. McGrone gets called out for his speed.

He said both lines look bigger and stronger and called out the S&C staff for a job well done over the past year.

Special teams looked great. 4 excellent kickers/punters and the return game looked special.

Haskins received a mention for a good practice as well. Lots of general feel good stuff in this post, but that is what he saw. Again, he is around the team a lot over the course of the year.

The bit about recruiting is interesting. I remember that Bush was one of the highest guys on their board, to the point where they turned down a 5 star linebacker in favor of 3 star Devin Bush. Uche and Paye are looking like similar hits. It'll be interesting to see how some of the other lower rated guys start playing, especially on defense this year.

As a reminder to all, two seasons ago the transition from Lewis/Clark/Stribling to potentially Long/Hill at CB was about to be a disaster. Zordich was openly complaining about their play to the media. MGoBoard was in a tizzy. Things were dire. Our pets heads were falling off.

Then actual games were played and those guys were awesome.

Don't panic.

Difference was those guys had a few reps to get their feet wet. Plus their recruiting profiles were a lot better than the guys we have backing up Ambry. Hill/Long were both the #6 & #8 CB respectively on 247 when they came out. On the flip side players like Gemon Green and Vicent Gray were the #38 & #77 recruits at  CB in their class. These are the type of players that you wouldn’t want to thrust into a starting role this early. Hopefully Zordich gets them coached up quickly and they’re ready by week 1.

Yeah, this situation is completely different, IMO. I get what Reggie is saying, but this is more like the talk we've heard in past years about tackle than what we've heard from Zordich about CB.

Two yerars ago, Hill had actually shown some real capability on the field, to the point where Zordich's comments were a real surprise. And we know what it sounds like when the staff likes a guy, even if we don't see him much. Dwumfour hype for a couple of years, and Ben Mason, and Khaleke Hudson, and even the chatter about Devin Bush before he started against Florida.

There's no such chatter about our current lower-end CBs. These are not highly-ranked recruits one can reasonably expect a lot from, and the kind of "diamond in the rough" chatter we'd expect from an emerging piece has been nonexistent. We are hearing their names only because there is nobody else.

And it's not Zordich throwing water on expectations here, either. It's the chatter coming out of the Fort, and there's a lot of it.

Means the development of the DTs and the pass rush from the DEs will be even more important than ever. Putting those guys out on an island (even if they're talented and if even they can outperform their rankings) with little experience means we can't give QBs 5, 6, 7 seconds to sit back and pick us apart. I expect amongst the DBs and Safeties we'll be able to find enough guys that it won't be a disaster by any means.

The case for optimism/good news is, I don't think we'll see a quality quarterback for a while (MTSU..no, Army..doesn't throw, Wisconsin...likely a freshman qb in 3rd start, Rutgers..LOL). Nate Stanley is the first experienced starter they'll face vs Iowa who is good when in a clean pocket per PFF but also lost his safety blankets and favorite targets to the NFL.  Then they'll have maybe Brandon Peters with Illinois, Whoever is the new QB for Penn State before they get Ian Book, followed by whichever RB is playing QB for maryland after all their guys get injured, Lewerke, and then Peyton Ramsey and hopefully whichever no-name is backing up Justin Fields but come on we all know how this goes so Justin Fields.

That's a survivable early stretch if they can handle Stanley and Iowa, where they may not be facing another experienced starter with a real threat to throw on your DBs until the last week of October. Hopefully Ambry's back early and they can get some progress from Grey, Green, and anybody else they're counting on.

If Ambry Thomas can't go (and there were health issues with Long and Hill the past two fall camps as well - again, don't panic), then we need a guy capable of playing man corner against receivers from MTSU, Army, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Iowa... I can't even get far enough to an opponent that I'm concerned about in the pass game without rolling my eyes. Penn State in late October probably?

We're not replacing them with some freshman walk-on. We're replacing him with recruited CBs who are probably still way more highly ranked than any receiver from any of those opponents. If you care about recruiting rankings so much to have you judge our players before they ever set foot on the field, then maybe look at the recruiting rankings of the guys they'll have to cover.

Just an expectation baseline...the analogy you throughout was not a good one. As was stated above no evidence has come out rather in recruiting rankings, on field performance or camp chatter that the players I mentioned are at a Hill/Long level! So setting that as the bar(which you stated not me) is a little misguided. Could they outperform their recruiting rankings? Sure. But you’re just going on blind faith that they will perform admirably. And looking at the recruiting rankings of the guys they have to cover in conference, some of them have better recruiting profiles than Gray and Green.

The comparison was to last time we had to replace a starter/starters at CB. Everyone here was losing their shit and it worked out just fine -- just like it will this time.

As was stated above no evidence has come out rather in recruiting rankings, on field performance or camp chatter that the players I mentioned are at a Hill/Long level!

Is Ambry Thomas on their level? Because he's the starter. Gray/Green/Perry/Turner are temporary replacements who will do just fine if they're needed - just like Thomas/St.Juste/Sims etc. would have been fine if they were needed two years ago, and they never were. I'm just trying to keep guys like you from having a stroke. Oh dear, there's no camp chatter (j-o motion). Okee-doke. You're dead set on panic. Go ahead and panic.

MGoBoard was in a tizzy. Things were dire. Our pets heads were falling off.

Must be August on MGoBlog. How will we ever play defense?

You’re talking in hyperbole now! No one ever said we wouldn’t be able to field a defense. Who was saying Hill & Long were not going to be good replacements? They actually got on the field and we’re adequate in spot duty. Guys like Sam Webb were hyping those guys up(Lavert and D. Long) in practice, saying how well seasoned they were for such young CB’s. We haven’t gotten any of that from these guys. Sam was on the air saying he thought JKP would probably start instead of Gray or the other corners because they weren’t quite up to  speed yet. So this isn’t just some posters trying to down play their talent, just observations from ppl in the know who say we may be thin at CB depth this year.

General feelings about the team/players were that there is more energy and effort. The leadership is very strong and they are leading by example.

With the disclaimer that I am not looking to stir up trouble and see anyone called out by name, were effort and energy big issues last year? I know the guys sitting for the bowl rubbed some people the wrong way, but between the whole Revenge Tour and general Winovich/Bush-ness, it never occurred to me that there was a problem with the level of effort being put forth.

I'm optimistic about our front 7 on D. I think they will be better than some people think. My main concern is CB. If we can get that position solidified, I'm looking for Big Ten Championship.

...and the CFP.

I'm very excited about our front 7 too.  Though we lost a lot of talent in Bush, Winovich, and Gary, we have a lot of talent and experience returning AND we add Mike Danna and finally Luiji Villain to the mix.

Look for Aiden Hutchinson to really dominate this year.  This kid, IMHO, is potentially not just All-B1G but also All-American.
