Source: Glenn Robinson III going Pro
JakeLFischer Source: Michigan soph forward Glenn Robinson III has signed with an agent and will enter the NBA Draft. Press conference coming this week. 4/14/14, 12:02 PM |
Really thought he would stay one more year, but the best of luck to him in the pros!
Edit: Jake Fischer is a Boston Globe correspondent and a writer for Slam Magazine. Seems legit.
Where did I say that McGary leaving would make him feel better?
Not trying to be a dick, just confused...
I said he now has other really good friends on the team.
So last year if Glenn was his only best friend (for lack of better words) he was losing 1 of 1.
Now with the other guys he would be losing 1 of 4 or 1 of 5 or 1 of 6.
It's a lot easier to stick around and be comfortable when you have 4, 5, 6 other best friends (again for lack of better words) that are still there with you.
I never discounted his friendship with GR3 one time. It's just simple math and if you talk to people around the program they'll agree that he's more comfortable with more guys on the team. Which, I mean, DUH, everyone has more friends in college their sophomore year vs. their freshman year when they hang around people they knew in high school more.
It's not a hard concept to fathom to be honest...no one is even saying he wouldn't be losing his very BEST friend, the best man in his future wedding. I'm just saying he's got 3, 4, 5, 6 other guys that he loves to be around and he's more comfortbale with GRIII not being around now than he was this time last year.
if they both bolt for the NBA. Jeezus, their decisions will be basketball and finance based--following advice from Beilein and people who know what they are talking about. The roomie/ best friend argument is just silly.

Because you said what I said...
my comment is clearly in response to the one above yours--both in content and by paragraph indentation. Relax.
Not in this offense...I think he's in the GRIII, Irvin mold (both of whom played 4) and I don't think he has the shot of either.
IMO he's a 3/4 in Beilein's offense and a 2/3 in most every other offense.
If GRIII came back I think he would've been almost exclusively a 3 (although he still would play SOME 4), but with him gone...Irvin's minutes go up and Chatman has to learn to play WITH Irvin some.
that he was the first of the three to sign if this is true.
im going to miss that endless motor glenn had
...is not the place to be sarcastic.
It will be a different team, different strengths, different weaknesses. Not sure anyone is saying that Irvin will do the exact same things GRIII did, just that he'll do good things and JB will make the adjustments to suit the personnel he has next season.
Taking his minutes is not equivalent to expecting him to do the exact same things. Some things Irvin will do better than GRIII, some things he will do worse, some things asked of GRIII will not be asked of Irvin, and vice versa. Will Beilein design a scheme tailored to the strengths of whoever returns though? No doubt about it.
Remember though - playing out of position on one end means having the opposite advantage on the other end. I'm not saying this is going to be a conventional team and that it won't have matchup oddities, but I believe in our head coach, more than any coach in the nation, to use those irregularities to the team's advantage.
is better in all phases of the game than you give him credit for---kinda like Nik was only a shooter. Watch.
I won't be surprised if he declares, but this one report doesn't make it official. Evidently, Robinson hasn't told Beilein and his staff what his plans are:
… sources told @CBSSports that Robinson hasn’t informed the Michigan staff of his intentions yet. Supposed to meet this week, I’m told.

All that said, I do expect Glenn Robinson III to enter the NBA Draft. My point is only that the Michigan staff is in the dark right now.

Hard for me to blame him if he does leave. He's staring his dream right in the face, and now might be his best chance to go. He's been playing out of his natural position for the past 2 years, and there's no guarantee it'd be anything different next year.
But boy, do we need McGary back now. Beilein will find a way to adapt no matter who we have on the court, but if we lose Stauskas, Robinson, and McGary, we could really be in trouble. Especially without a true big man.
I wish Glenn Robinson all the best, but this is a mistake. He's gonna be a late first-round pick at best and more than likely ends up in the second round. This reminds me way too much of Darius Morris and Manny Harris.
Because it must tell you that those guys were guaranteed to be better players and higher picks had they stayed.
What if Glenn stayed and didn't get any better, just a year older? He's still be a solid player for us, but his draft stock would've been hurt for the 2015 draft.
I know he was likely to get better, same with Morris and Harris, but we don't know that for sure. And if any of those guys just "stay the same" then it's a negative for them draft wise.
frankly he never had the numbers here to justify being a 1st rounder, just the measurables and athleticism. Another year of ok numbers and being a jumpy person are probably not great for your draft stock. This still allows him to ride the wave of 'potential' into a good contract.
Good luck in the league
So now the Detroit News is reporting it too. Based only on this tweet and some additional comments from a CBS sports guy about how the Michigan staff hasn't been told yet. Ridiculous. Can we please just let these kids have their press conferences?!?
For next year Irvin and Walton will be great and JB knows how to coach. We all know that.
I can't blame Glenn for not wanting to play the 4 anymore. Best of luck to him in the NBA. Kam Chatman and Mark Donnal, you're up.
I know it's crazy, but I'm starting to feel almost like Beilein recruits TOO well. Every year now it seems like we're in a cycle, "Well, we lost this key piece early and so we're going to be raw at this spot this year, but the year after, if everyone comes back, we'll be a Final Four favorite." But then the guys who blow up that following year of course don't stay. I feel for these coaches, it's gotta suck trying to balance excellent recruiting with having actual depth. It seems like putting a truly complete team on the floor is like winning the lottery, you have that one lucky year where a couple vets who could have gone pro decide to stay, and/or a freshman unexpectedly comes up big, and you're a contender. Tom Izzo finally had that again this year and blew it, now it looks like he's got a long way back.
As noted above, there isn't an official announcement and supposedly will not be until the middle of the week, but even if he does go, it has been a pleasure to watch him over these past two seasons.
I wish Glenn nothing but the best - hopefully, he does well at workouts if he does indeed leave and maximizes his draft position. He was one of the more prolific scorers this year, so the production definitely will be missed.
Wish him the best but damn he's gonna fizzle in the NBA. Stay in school! For the love of God!
If this is true, I wish him the best. I'm truly grateful for what he's done to the program the last two years, especially playing out of position while we all know his talent is more suited to 3 and his future in NBA is 3.
GRIII was barely getting D1 interest.
No need to hate on kids who go early. This is just the system we live in and part of the sport of basketball. If anything I see the UM's success continuing this trend. 3 and 4 stars with NBA dreams will flow to UM (like they do to mort of the upper half of the B1G) be developed and bolt in two or three years, whether we think they are good enough. Guys who put off the pros such as Adrian Payne and mItch McGary are unique.
The difference here is that it seems like Michigan is losing an abundance of guys with mediocre draft potential that still have some developing to do. And, they are leaving behind a coach with an outstanding track record for doing just that. I don't have any regrets seeing a guy like Trey Burke leave when he obviously has nothing left to do in college, but when guys like Darius Morris and now GRIII (if the report is true) leave, they hurt not just the team, but arguably themselves as well.
In between basketball and football, Ann Arbor has become the "Fucked Up Leaving Early" Capital of the World over the past decade. As a Michigan fan, I'm getting really fucking sick of it.
is not unique to Michigan.
Meh. Bad decision if you ask me. Similar to Darius Morris. At this point, he still has nothing that is proven to be NBA-worthy beyond measurables. He might get drafted solely on those measurables but if he ends up going in the second round, then this was a dumb decision.
Not a critical one though as the guy that we really need to stay is McGary.
Hopefully Robinson ends up on a team with a staff that helps him change his mindset on the basketball court. He has the ability to dominate a game, it's just about whether he wants to or not. It was time for him to go if the info came back with first round potential.
I think it's stupid when people say he is bailing on the program because that couldn't be farther from the truth. Another Michigan player in the NBA will help build the program, imo.
We'll see what happens with McGary, but if he stays, McGary and Donnal could be fun to watch together.
This may mean mitch is gone
