Shouldn't we focus more on Columbus than on Ohio?

Submitted by Wolverine90 on

I see shirts saying "Ohio - Worst state ever" and constant general Ohio bang ups on this site.  I don't get it.  Grbac, Woodson, Howard, etc., etc., so many great UM players have come to us from Ohio, and they had, and probably still have, families living in Ohio.  Ohio is a major recruiting ground for UM.  Yet we constantly bang up Ohio instead of focusing on Columbus and OSU.

If  a hypothetical recruit living in State A is being recruited by the team from State B and many State B fans keep banging up my home state, i.e., my home and my family's home, I'd be less incentivized to go to State B.

Like the graphic in my sig, I prefer to bang up that rat's nest that is Columbus, relative to the beauty of Ann Arbor, and to take it easy on Ohio.  But am I alone in thinking the way UM fans crush Ohio in general doesn't do UM any favors on the Ohio recruiting trail?

Doesn't stop Ohio from playing that "we don't give a damn about the whole state of Michigan" song, and then going after MI recruits.  You're reaching.  It's all in fun and the general states dislike each other stemming from the fight for the waterway in Toledo.

I have no love for Ohio.  I grew up on Farmington Hills and lived in Ann Arbor 8 years for undergrad and law school, and I agree towns like Toledo and Columbus are malignant.  Cleveland is bunk too, countered by Detroit I'd imagine.

You all crap on Ohio - representative of a large segment of Michigan fans - but we're talking football here.  Not parks, rivers, sewage or amusement parks, even though yeah Cedar Point rocks.  One thing the shit hole you all despise has going for it is what, the fourth best football recruiting state behind FL, NY and CA, that happens to have fed our beloved football team with many of our best players ever.

Yet you shit on it indiscriminately, not heeding the chilling effect that may have on a recruit.  yet God forbid someone question the UM football program on these boards mid-recruiting season, then they are a pariah for doing the slightest irrelevant thing that may impact recruiting.  Funny.  Pot meet kettle.

"99% of Ohioans are Buckeye fans anyway..."?  My point exactly.  Perhaps if UM fans focus hate toward Columbus instead of Ohio, we can all do our tiny part to help our team recruit that state down south that much better by not having Ohio recruits thinking they're going to feed a fan base that makes fun of the home of their fathers, mothers and siblings.

HUR HUR.  ME CAVE MAN.  ME SAY FUCK OHIO.  FUCK THE CHINA I'M A BULL.

I hope you aren't the same guy who gets up in arms at the slightest UM neg on these boards during the season, like Queen Elizabeth monitoring table eitquette.  My guess is you are. =\

What about your GPA? Any extracurricular activities?

Seriously, I agree that there can be a point where fans take things too far.  But if any fanbase goes too far, it's OSUs, and that hasn't stopped them from nabbing Michigan guys now and then.  You seem to be implying that we just started disliking OSU recently, which is not exactly accurate.

BTW, Trey Burke is from Columbus.  So should we only hate the parts of Columbus that aren't zoned to his high school?

Unrelated to Columbus or OSU or anything Buckeye...

Of all the places I've driven, Ohio drivers consistently get in the left lane on the freeway... seemingly to pass someone... then pull up to next to the car they are passing and sit there, creating a sort of gridlock where none of the rest of us can get by. Of course this will happen other places, too. But I can count on it in Ohio every single time I drive through that state.

One of my favorite moments at Yost was several years back when we had a game with Miami. The second the first RedHawk player stepped on the ice, the crowd burst into a "WORST state EVer, clap clap clap-clap-clap!" cheer.

There are some fine people from Ohio, some of whom are dear friends. But it's still fun to rip on Ohio because, well... it's Ohio.

I was born in ohio and have been a Michigan fan since I was 10. I moved to Arizona about 10 years ago and went back to Ohio to visit family a few times since. The city of Columbus gets dirtier and nastier everytime I visit while Cinncinatti looks so much better than it did when I left.

As far as the worst state ever that's Texas, I would'nt pee on that state if it was on fire. Misssissippi and oklahoma are close behind, mainly because I can't understand people from Miss. and Oklahoma has the worst freeway system ever.

Both my sister were born in Ohio, my nephew was born in Ohio and I came mightly close to being born in Ohio.  And I just in general hate the state.  It is a lousy state, I don't like the people, I hate driving through it, and in general I don't want to stop in the state to buy anything.  And really doesn't have much to do with Ohio State.  The state just kind of sucks.

In reality, Ohio has some VERY nice people (sans Buckeye fans) and I really like the southeast corner of the state (near Ohio U).

But in the end, Ohio is the worst state ever..........primarily because Ohio State University resides there.

My hatred of Ohio is only partly due to tsio. It's mostly about the fact that Ohio sucks. There's tsio, their cops being pricks, seriously the cops, tsio again, it's really ugly, not a lot redeeming there...

I mean cmon man. It's Ohio. It's a bad place. Sometimes people redeem themselves by seeing the light and coming to Michigan, but by and large it sucks.

One of the myriad things that pisses me off about that place is that people in Ohio think they're just regular old Americans. Like "this is just regular America, nothing fancy" kind of thing.

America doesn't suck. Damn it.

I only have a slight soft spot for head coaches and heisman trophy winners.  Hell, my mom is from Columbus and I dont even like her much.  I would, however, like to make the case for Toledo because it was only annexed by Ohio in a Nazi like raid.   It is actually part of Michigan that is being occupied.

The U.S. Congress awarded the Toledo Strip to Ohio, after the "Toledo War" proved completely indecisive (the Michigan and Ohio militias never found each other in the swamps and thus never battled).

We gave up our claim to Toledo in return for the western two-thirds of the Upper Peninsula.  It was a good deal for us.

Don't let facts get in the way of a go story.  Act of congress?  We were not a state and had no representation,  they swooped in like a blitzkrieg and stole that land from us, and any iron reserves or tourism dollars we may or may not have recieved in the deal is a side note to history.  This doesn't excuse the fact that the poor Michiganders are living under Ohio's tyrant rule.  For the love of god do you know some of the poor children are being raised as Ohio State fans?  Free Toledo.

All I know is I live in the Toledo area and I say I hate Ohio all the time. It is pretty split with Michigan and Ohio State fans here in Toledo though I'd say. I just went to the Franklin Park mall here the other day, and the main attraction in the sports apparel store was a Tressel's tattoo & pawn shirt. Got to love a buckeye bashing shirt on sale front and center in Ohio. I had to buy it, and have worn it to work twice already. Also, during the Duke basketball game in the NCAA tourney, I went out to a bar in Toledo to watch it and it was nothing but Michigan fans. Probably close to 40 people, all Michigan fans. So Toledo isn't bad at all, well in terms of Michigan fans anyway. The city is still a shithole. Luckily I live in the suburbs.
