Scouting Colorado

Submitted by SFBayAreaBlue on

I'm starting to get a little worried that the fans (not the team or coaches) are taking the Buff's too lightly.  Not that it really matters what the fans think, except for the quality of discourse in the game threads and liveblog.

I've only watched the Colorado v. CSU game so far, but they look like an honest to goodness P5 team.  Their QB is a senior that has a lot of experience and was good at making his reads.  They run a spread tempo, and I hate playing tempo teams (too much trauma from the Carr/Hoke days).

We'll probably dominate on both lines, but they've got a lot of good players.

Both of their #4's look like solid athletes.  #4 on Defense has good ball instincts and breaks on the ball well.  #4 on Offense is a good blocking WR in addition to being a deep threat.  I am very worried about him blocking Clark who had a bad day getting off blocks against UCF.

I still think we'll win the game, but I'm considering taking the points. (hope I'm wrong)

What do you guys think?  Anyone watch both of their games yet?

I don't know that you can judge Colorado based on that CSU game at least, which is the one I watched - I watched most of it and and it really seems like it is more CSU being terrible than Colorado being that worrisome. I do think that they are capable of a much better fight than UCF, but I still think we can cover the 20 points now being given. As someone said, I think we're the best defense - arguably, the first competent one - they've come across yet.

Remember that for every one guy that Colorado has that is really good, we've got three or four.  We're hungry and on a mission.  Not worried at all, just excited to see the game.  I'll take Michigan -20 without hesitation.

I'm not worried. Unfortunately I won't be able to watch the game, but I expect a 2+ TD win at least. At worst this is a game that remains close in score longer than it should. Haven't watched their games, but the CSU score caught my attention. They are a team that might have some confidence after beating some BAD teams, but our team has depth to deal with their offensive style. Best test of the year so far for Michigan, but there's nothing to worry about.

On a side note, I'm excited for some of the other games this weekend. Should be a lot of good football on Saturday.

Fear the spread blah blah blah.
Has anyone else noticed how teams are figuring it out? Spread & shred is absolute hell!...between the 20's that is. Just keep it in front of you until the field gets short and watch it stall out on its own.

S&P uses last years finish in its calculations through the first 4 weeks of the season. Colorado was NOT good last year. They appear to be much improved this season. We will see though. Our first big test is this Saturday.

Also with respect to CSU, I will mention that their offense is virtually unchanged from last year and CU's defense allowed 500 total yard (282P/218R) in 2015, while this year allowing a total of 225 yards (63P/162R). The CU defense is improved. By quite a bit. However we won't know until Saturday if that better is good enough.

#4 on Defense in an all-star and will be drafted. He plays all over the field, which allows a ton of flexibility and helps Leavitt disguise his pressures.

No unfortunately. She only travels to bowl games now (hasn't travelled in a while obviously). The long distance in the trailer is stressful for her so they minimize it as much as possible. Also because your weird stadium only has a tunnel on the 50, there is no way for her to run the loop she normally runs. Just wouldn't work.

If you look at how she runs at Folsom Field it would make more sense. At home she runs in a horseshoe type route, meaning only 1 big turn. If she were to run at Michigan Stadium, she would have to make 4 turns and that is assuming her handlers could get her trailer to the field.

UCF was absolutely terrible. They did not win a game the entire year, and the only games where they came close were one-point losses to Florida International and Furman. They were outscored 452 to 167.

Colorado, on the other hand, was merely bad. They played in a tougher league, won four games and managed to come within six points of USC, UCLA and Utah.

I just watched the first quarter of their game against Colorado State, in which CU scored three TDs on three possessions and did not allow a first down. Here are my thoughts:

Offense: Some good speed at RB and WR. Their o-line will have trouble with M though. Liufau isn't as good a runner as I expected, but he's a better passer. Two fumbles in the quarter so ball security could be an issue.

Defense: Looks like one-gap 3-4 ala DJ Durkin. Safeties and LBs very active, but DTs look small and play high. CSU's quarterbacks were crappy though--easily confused and looked rattled by the crowd/environment/score.

This will be a blowout and ~-20 points or whatever it closes at will be easy money.

I get why everyone is a little shaken. We've seen a lot of upsets, bad games and pain as Michigan fans, but this team should and probably will destroy Colorado. This is a really good team who hasn't even started cooking with gas yet against a middling Pac 12 team. Don't overthink it.
