Ricky Doyle Appreciation Thread

Submitted by Rodriguesqe on

He deserves it. As the first memeber of the class of 2014 to break out, have the crowd chant his name, he has arrived. Donnal may get some more starts, but Doyle is going to be the guy.

I sort of see the Mcgary comparison the announcers made, but I think the easier one is Jordan Morgan, except Doyle has much better hands and an extra inch.

3 stars? Puh-leaze.

Welcome aboard Ricky, and great game.

Way to beast in the last minute of the game.  I know M was winning at the time, but he basically had the game winning basket after his offensive rebound.  Made it a 2 posession game, nice work big fella

He's a bit taller than J-Mo and has more rim protection, but he does play similarly.  There was a hedge, retreat, hedge, retreat, force tough runner sequence that was VERY Morgan.  Also the drawn charges.

Not quite as good a rebounder and he wasn't always in the right place but I could see him getting there.  And that's what we need from the 5.

I'm very excited for all our young bigs to develop, because they all have excellent potential within Beilein's system, but none of them is the kind of freakish natural athlete that would be plucked by the NBA early.  Some or all of them may make the NBA, but if they do so it will be on the strength of a Frank Kaminsky-like polished game that takes a few years in college to develop.

Overall a decent showing but some major mental lapses on offense.  JB had to call time out a couple of times it looked so bad.  That will prove costly later on in the season.  Like coach said at halftime, they are still trying to figure some things out.

Leave the McGary comparison alone. McGary was a freak athlete and an amazing passer. Doyle is a big kid who plays tenacious and uses his size well, but he's not gonna be leading the fast break any time soon like McGary did on multiple occasions.

I think people are comparing Doyle 4 games into his career with 2013 Tourney McGary.  2013 McGary was a completely different animal from early season 2012 McGary.  Yes, you could see the flashes with early season 2012 McGary, and he was an rebound machine, but he made a ton of boneheaded plays and messed stuff up as often as he made great plays.  While I don't think Doyle has the high upside that McGary had, I think Doyle is asserting himself earlier than McGary did in their respective careers.

Also loved what Irvin did.  Had some really nice drives to the basket.  If he can consistently do that to compliment his 3 pt shooting he will be one of the top scorers in the conference.

Obviously a great effort all night from Doyle, but what was most impressive was the patience he showed on that last two he scored to put us up 5. Most freshmen with his kind of size would just try to force their way through the post defenders, but he showed maturity and post presence with his positioning and easy finish. Really promising game from the young guy, hope it can continue.

He looks like a junior. He will be a pillar of strength for this program for a few years. Maybe even 3 or 4 gasp...

Good win against a men PAC 10 squad. I think they'll play better offensively, and they played well defensively for such a young team. I suspect Spike will start next game instead of Chatman. Chatman has skills, but is low energy, and needs to learn how to use his huge frame. He'll be a good one, but it might take more time than we'd like.

Doyle has that energizer battery thing going that is going to be SO DAMN annoying for opponents for the next 4 years.  I can already hear the complaints in Columbus Madison and EL.  "That sweaty guy again! Can't anyone stay on him. BOX HIM OUT! HE IS A 3 STAR WHO CANT EVEN JUMP!! COSTELLO!!!!"
