Referees to wear GoPro camera hats for Big Ten championship game

Submitted by uofmchris on

Just read an article on MLive (not sure if I can post it or not) that stated the refs will be wearing GoPro cameras placed on their hats so the viewing audience can see the game from their perspective. It was tested earlier in the season, but I find it ironic they are wearing them for this game.

Cute.

Edit: Yeah it is a post about the refs. But it is relevant. Sorry master.

So what happens when the ref needs to throw their hat either for a second penalty on the play or a guy gets forced out of bounds?  Or is it just the referee and not the linesmen wearing them?

Looks like the geniuses at ESPN basketball who came up with the "courtside view" broadcast have jobs at FOX.

Can't wait until they try to repackage a Nintendo Power Pad for the XBox version of "Jump to Conclusions."

Honestly I'd rather they had a couple guys there auditing the ref performance. Not sure why that isn't a thing. Quality control exists in all other industries.

GoPros sound like a gimmick "fix" that won't do a damn thing but give ESPN a new (and shittier) angle to broadcast.

But will the replay judge have access to it?? All this would've changed from the game is the Ohio refs would've conveniently not looked at the plays before missing every call. Need first down marker cams

This is the most important question: will the replay official have access to the ref cams?  Could be a pretty cool thing if they do, albeit a week too late.  Even if a ref is not looking at the action and misses a critical call/spot, the fact that he was looking away and still spotted the ball would be just as damning as if he was looking and got it wrong.

I agree that a camera on the first down marker would also be a great addition - if it can be added to the pylon, it surely can be added to the sticks...or just put the same go pro on the chain gang's hats.  That said, considering the line judge should always have a clear enough view to spot the ball, even without a camera on the first down marker, go pro refs is at least a step in the right direction...again, IF the replay official has access to the feed.  Without access this is just a benign viewership gimmick.

I just dropped the truck off for service at the dealership, wearing my M hat, obviously. 1. The porter (Gator) says "I don't care what anyone says, Michigan is a top 4 team," 2. The service writer (Cane) says "they got you on 4th down like they got us in the endzone," and 3. The cashier (Gator) says "I was pulling hard for you guys... I can't believe Ped State is getting a shot. You guys got jobbed."

Why not make the refs wear 360 scan hats and get get a good three-dimensional perspective on every call?

I mean, Big Ten officiating would still suck, but now it could suck in first-person AND in 3-D.

Why not put sensors in footballs? In this day and age it would seem simple to put sensors in footballs, pucks, etc and also have something at the goal line, yard marker, etc. If the sensor is past the line it is a first down, touchdown, etc.

I can't figure out why they have not done away with umpires calling balls and strikes with some sort of machine vision. Seems like sensors would be perfect for hockey as you could sense when the puck crossed the goal line even when under a goalie.

Camera's seem archaic compared to sensors. I'm sure they would be glitches but it is worth a try. They have a crap ton of sensors in wearables that might be able to take the human element out of some calls - like targeting to the head for example.

So they can prove refs can't see everything? Yeah, we know that. That's why we instituted replay. Also doesn't answer why Delaney allowed OSU fans to ref an OSU game

This is the height of corporate PR stupidity

It's time to incorporate proximity sensors and vision systems into CFB.  They have been in use for years in manufacturing and the costs are very low.  A football could be fitted seamlessly with multiple sensors (front, back, middle(s)) and sensors could be installed in the field out of sight.  When the ball goes in motion it would provide instant, 100% accurate results of the actual forward momentum of the ball.  No more guesstimates on ball placement.  I'm really shocked they haven't already done this.
