Poll: Top 25 players in Michigan History

Submitted by ItsHarambe on

So I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this but I figured it's worth a shot.

According to UM Fan from Sydney, there are now 26 days until the start of Michigan football. With the offseason coming to an end, it's time for us to start getting ready for the upcoming season.

We've all seen the "top 25 such and such" of every team and we've all thought they we're wildly inaccurate. So I've decided MGoBlog needs their own ranking, currated by those who know best(you guys). Below I've attached a link to a google quiz where you get to fill out your top 5-10 Michigan players (of any sport) of all time. Hopefully we have enough responses where there becomes some disparity in the answers.

Once I have the ranking, I'll post each athlete in descending order (maybe I'll just post in the comments of UM Fan from Sydney's daily posts if there isnt enough interest) each day until the start of football season.

We're hitting the finishing strech and only have a little bit to go. But until then, GO BLUE!

I based it mostly off of college success (so no Tom Brady):

1. Charles Woodson

2. Tom Harmon

3. Desmond Howard

4. Jake Long

5. Rick Leach

6. Ron Kramer

7. Steve Hutchinson

8. Anthony Carter

9. Braylon Edwards

10. Mike Hart

I'll fight anyone over Hart. He's by no means the most talented RB we've had, probably not even top 5. But I'd take him as a college back over practically anyone else.

I would dispute Mike Hart. I liked him a lot, but I would argue he's solidly behind Tyrone Wheatley and likely Anthony Thomas (possibly others as well) just in terms of RBs at Michigan. That's not a knock on Hart at all, but we've had some good ones. Personally, I can't fathom having him above Wheatley.

But the definition of a Michigan Man, to me, is Devin Gardner.  There was a dude who dealt with adversity maturely and without flinching.  One of the greatest regrets i have with Michigan sports is that Fucking Borges didn't tell him run that 2-point conversion in after the timeout in the OSU game.  That would have properly capped the greatest Michigan Man athletic performance since Tom Harmon (who never faced those odds).

This may just be because he was Michigan's running back when I was in High School and my favorite player until Denard, (or maybe because he was amazing on my Playstation 1 NCAA Football game) but I would take Tyrone Wheatley over Mike Heart.  I think among other things, Wheatley had better vision and definitely had much better speed.

Sigh......I didn't realize until just now that it was top-10 athletes......your title made me assume it was football since it said players and you mentioned football.

in all of UM's history. So now no one that hasn't won a Heisman or scored the most TDs can't be on the list? GTFO of here man. Carter's off, Harbaugh's off, Leach is gone. Hart, Wheatley, Robinson: sorry, guys.

No need to get emotional.

QB Harry Newman won the Heisman before the Heisman in the Fairbanks Trophy.

You win the top award in the sport, you're automatically the best all-time here at your position.

Also, Oosterbaan was a 3-time All-American. There are only two of them. Him and AC. Both on the list.

Chappuis finished runner up in 1947 Heisman and should've won it. He was a WWII hero.

Benny Friedman was football's first great passer.

I have Charles one, followed by Tom and Desmond and AC flip-flopped. Three time AA vs. one great season was logic there. Tom Harmon ran a 9;.9 in 1939 and was a big dude. He was Peppers as far as versatility and yes, J.P. is on my list too. I didn't forget you Mark, only other BIG player to be three time AA along with A.C.

This is really hard to rank a top ten. So many great players from so many eras. Also have to consider the big uglies on both offense and defense too as opposed to just going with the big name guys at the skill positions.

For football this is impossible.

There's been so many great players you could do all-decade teams.

for creating an awful poll. I mean "write in the 10 best players for Michigan" is about as bad as it gets. I wasn't expecting a conjoint analysis (although on this site, maybe I was?), but not even dropdowns?
