OT: Zingerman’s makes doughnuts on the weekends? They are spectacular

I assume this is not well known? Only avail at their Bakehouse location by the airport and Costco. Sunday morning they had a chocolate glazed yeast doughnut and a sweet ricotta-filled doughnut. I’m not really a donut guy but they were both easily the best I’ve ever had. 10 out of 10.

Thank goodness Zingerman's did not come out with its donuts during Bill Martin's tenure as AD, as I am certain he would have devised a strategy of giving everybody a free football ticket to our games for every donut purchased.

I'm sorry. I stand corrected. I believe I should have referenced Dave Brandon and not Bill Martin regarding ticket giveaways.

I don't know if you can compare Zingerman's to other delis. Zingerman's sort of reinvented the deli, giving each sandwich a personality of its own, rather than just doing a traditional pastrami or corned beef. If you like the more straightforward traditional sandwiches, I could see thinking that Zingerman's is overpriced and not all that.

Yep, DJ’s is amazing. And you’re helping support a mom & pop business of a family who immigrated fleeing from Cambodia during the Cambodian-Vietnamese War; it’s a win-win where you get to save money compared to Zingermans and DJ’s could use your money a lot more than Zingermans could. They’ve got some Asian inspired parts of their menu as well with Vietnamese iced coffee and Thai iced coffee.

I'm not familiar with what all is available up there now (other than having to get cinnamon donuts from the Dexter cider mill when I go up to AA every year) but I was about to say that Cambodian donuts are the way to go and they're all over the country.  Even my Viet family doesn't object.

I'm a die hard donut person. The donuts I measure all others against are in NY at a place called The Doughnut Plant. My favorite is a sourdoughnut (made with sourdough starter) and they come in different flavors. The dark chocolate is my fave. It's less sweet than traditional donuts, with a little chew, and it's somehow vegan, which isn't a selling point for me, but it is kind of amazing that no butter or eggs are used. I've been going to this place for around 25 years and have tried most of their flavors. I'm sure Zingerman's has great donuts, too, just felt the need to plug my favorite place. There's also one in Brooklyn.

Avon Donuts in Pontiac is great. Donut Cutter too. I don’t think I’ve been to the other place. If you’re willing to trek down Woodward to Palmer Woods, Dutch Girl Donuts is reopening under new ownership. Donut Bar in Southfield is just ok. A little decadent and too done up for donuts if you ask me. Duck Donuts in Troy is great and not a bad drive from you. Also, the kosher bakery on 13 and Southfield has good donuts. I’m blanking on the name.

ALL of Zingerman's Bakehouse goods are phenomenal. Try the Obama Bun if you like sticky buns. Cinnamon Raisin bread is terrific, Lemon Cloud, Blondie, etc, etc.

Little known Canadian joint down the road called Tim Horton's makes these little balls called bits.  They are tasty.  I like the blueberry.

I believe you can get them weekend mornings at the Roadhouse too, and a lot of their desserts are built around their donuts. With that said, I think serve 1 kind of donut there (traditional, maybe with sugar coating.. Can't remember).

They've been around for several years.  I believe they date back to the Before Times (pre-pandemic).  The ricotta filled is my favorite.
