OT: Wilson new Indiana coach
Oklahoma OC Kevin Wilson will be named Indiana's new head coach tomorrow, replacing the fired Bill Lynch.
In other news, Northern Illinois coach Jerry Kill is the new Minnesota coach. During the 90's he was the coach at Saginaw Valley State, so it's kinda cool to see a mid-Michigan guy ascend to a Big Ten job.

IU was on the right track with Hoeppner. Maybe Wilson can recreate their relative success.

I saw SVSU and was thinking GVSU and thought "what? when?"
December 7th, 2010 at 1:50 AM ^
haha! what an Ass-Hat. oh wait...
December 7th, 2010 at 8:23 AM ^
Grrr... GVSU must never be mistaken for SVSU.

Thanks again coach Lynch

i think he will do great things for IU. I am a little perplexed that Minnesota didnt go after a big name coord for there next head coach. IE. Wilson type guy.

Damn, I really hoped Mike Leach would have gotten one of these jobs. There aren't enough pirates in the big10.
December 7th, 2010 at 1:58 AM ^
Ron Zook and Bill Lynch are challenges these days... i'd hate to see us against leach.
December 7th, 2010 at 2:01 AM ^
Agree. Though it would be entertaining a few years down the road when UM is back to prominence. Leach is set on lobbying his ass off for the Miami job, though. I think it's the U or bust from his perspective.

I just read another article about him in sporting News and I'm starting to like the guy. I know that's the whole point of those interviews, but he really likes coaching, is good at it, and was screwed over by the James family.

you have no comment on his wife?
December 7th, 2010 at 7:34 AM ^
I was hoping the same thing, I would go to more IU games if that pirate was there. I only live 1.5 hrs from there. Would have liked to seen him put it on tOSU a few times, would have brought life back to IU the way Robert Montgomery Knight did

I had been wondering for years (an especially since that stupendous 2008 offense at Oklahoma) why Kevin Wilson wasn't getting any HC offers. Good hire by Indiana.
December 7th, 2010 at 2:45 AM ^
I think Kill is a better hire. Hiring a coordinator, who has never had head coach experience, misses more than it hits at BCS programs. For every Bob Stoops there are ten Bill Lynches.
December 7th, 2010 at 3:00 AM ^
Chip Kelly, Dan Mullen, and, oh, I don't know, dozens of other succesful coaches would like to have a word with you.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:06 AM ^
As would the numerous failed coaches that were assistants before and had no head coaching experience. Unless you do a statistical study of the success of coaches over several years based on their backgrounds (successful coach before vs. long-time assistant, no HC experience), there is really no way to prove it either way.
Seeing as this is mgoblog, however, I imagine someone will jump on that study before too long.

Chip Kelly was OC at Oregon before he was promoted to HC.

great great hire. This guy is good. Rich Rod paid him a visit a few years back to talk about tight ends

Does Wilson step in right now or does he coach the Sooners in the bowl game?
December 7th, 2010 at 7:26 AM ^
Push or Shannon for dc
December 7th, 2010 at 7:36 AM ^
Or steal another Oklahoma assistant in Willy Martinez current db coach former Georgia DC
December 7th, 2010 at 7:53 AM ^
I only started to pay attention to Martinez due to the hubbub (great word that. Hubbub. Say it with me) around EDSBS about how horrible he was at UGA and how soft his secondaries were.
December 7th, 2010 at 1:59 PM ^
That's strange that he would be a db coach at a school like OK. I'll check into that
December 7th, 2010 at 2:26 PM ^
I don't know about his secondaries, but looks like he regressed as a DC. Started out strong (#7 pass defense) then slowly declined in all phases. Googled his name and looked at some GA blogs, they were hating on him pretty hard much like we do our very own GERG to where it's kind of like you want to defend the guy but you just can't. Hopefully RR and DB will make the right choice.

I've been a big fan of his ever since the tossing of the gum incident. How can you not like someone who hates their own gum that much? That's comedic gold people! Until this Wilson character can display an equal hatred of his gum, I will be disappointed. Now, if Wilson can find a way to top Lynch - maybe by punting his gum - he will definitely win my heart.
God speed, Bill "Gumball" Lynch. God speed.

Wilson is a good hire. He'll have that offense operating at a very high level. If he can just get some solid defensive guys, they'll be dangerous.
December 7th, 2010 at 12:24 PM ^
You're talking about Indiana not Michigan here right? /sarcasm
December 7th, 2010 at 9:26 AM ^
MSU OC Don Treadwell interviewed for the job as well.
December 7th, 2010 at 12:48 PM ^
I know a lot of MSU fans that think that you would have lost to Wisconsin had Dantonio been coaching. Realistically, how much do you think it would hurt to have Treadwell leave for a HC position?
December 7th, 2010 at 9:50 AM ^
he passed the gum chucking test
December 7th, 2010 at 9:57 AM ^
At least he already has the colors down pat.
December 7th, 2010 at 10:25 AM ^
is actually playing a D1 level non-conference schedule next season. Except for Deleware State.

I'm still trying to get that game (and A-train's fumble) out of my head.
