OT: Who is your #2 college football team and why?

Submitted by crg on

I put this as OT since it is not immediately about UM football, but is blog relevant since it gives broader understanding about those who post here:

Parents are not supposed to have favorite children, but this is football and most of us here have already chosen UM as our main team/program. However, is there another team out there that is almost (or equally) dear to you, either within the Big Ten or in all of CFB (EDIT: OR WHO ELSE DO YOU DISLIKE THE LEAST)? What drew you to have this mixed loyalty - and who do you support if UM and this other team play? This question is also valid for those here that have another team as their primary and UM second - how did that come about?

For me, I have a stronger appreciation for NW than most other programs. They enforce academic standards more than most, they are more amicable than many other P5 fanbases, no great UM emnity, some degree of on field success, and seem to be genuinely interested in the student's long term prospects beyond their playing career. While these characteristics describe many other schools also, a more personal aspect is that 1) I have several alums in my extended family and 2) almost chose to go there for grad school (did not have the specialization I really wanted though). Regardless, I am still pleased when UM soundly pummels them - now possibly twice in one season.

I made a pact with a buddy in grad school. We didn't think too many others history Phds were going to be interested in watching football every Saturday. We went 3-9, Washington went 0-12, but I've watched almost every Washington game since.

Needless to say, rooting for Harbaugh and Petersen has been a delight.

1/2 my family are navy/marines so I root for Navy more or less.

The other 1/2 went to WMU but unless they are playing a Michigan rival i don't really follow them much.

There are a few that went to Kansas, but they are universally ignored.

Slightly OT, but when I was a kid and my parents had season tickets, there was a guy with season tickets a few rows behind us who would always root for whoever was playing AGAINST Michigan. Never saw his face, just would hear him yelling and complaining at officiating, etc. being contrarian.

Not sure whether was some guy denied tenure, a self-hater, or just perverse, but I always thought that was a little strange.

But I guess I could understand it- if I had to live in C-bus or had season tickets to the Cowboys or Yankees or Dodgers or Lakers, I might be that guy myself.

I don't really have a 2nd team, per say. If Michigan isn't playing there's not a team I will go out of my way to watch. There are teams I like to see do well, but I wouldn't go as far to say I'm a "fan" of theirs.

and was a kid during the 1980 season, so obviously Georgia with Herschel Walker and Vince Dooley.

GT because of the 1990 season when they shared the natty with Colorado. Great team. And, of course, their basketball team in the early 90s with Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott, and Brian Oliver (Lethal Weapon 3! Not to be confused with the Atlanta Braves' Young Guns) was so fun to watch.

And Colorado b/c my uncle moved to Denver in the mid-80s and became a Buffs fan. Eric Bienemy was one of my favorite players. That got tempered a bit in 1994, to say the least. It was nice to see them do well last season, although I was obviously perfectly happy with Michigan whooping them (and, of course, in 1997).
