OT: Tigers/afternoon baseball Open Thread

Submitted by Moleskyn on

Tigers finishing up a series with the Royals today. Good guys jumped out to a quick lead, it's 1-0 after 1.

Other afternoon games today include O's vs. Angels, Reds vs. Cubs, and Braves vs. Padres a little later.

How has the season played out so far compared to your expectations?

Hi, caller Joe from Dearborn here: can we trade Valverde and Avila for Pujols????

Seriously though - that outing from Jose Alvarez on Sunday means he is likely to be dealt for a closer at some poi t before the trade deadline. I just hope we don't have to give up a front-line prospect to get a stop-gap closer when Dombrowski could have signed Soriano this off-season.

Soriano got a fat contract, and with Miggy looking for an extension it was probably wise to stay away. A closer like a Casey Janssen or a Luke Gregorson will probably cost a B level prospect, so say goodbye to a Danry Vasquez, a Tyler Collins or a Jake Thompson. But yes this situation needs to be remedied sooner rather than later.

Technically, that run went to him but there's no telling that he could have closed the game or by himself. The inning before the first guy got on. And then Smyly rolled a double play. Smyly had proven to be a reliable guy. He needs more innings.

There aren't many better options!?

Drew Smyly, Luke Putkonen, Darin Downs, Benoit and Jose Ortega are all better at this point.  Valverde is blowing 1 in 4 saves and the advanced stats point to it not getting better.  Just because Leyland throws Coke out there doesn't mean no one else is a better option.

the only reason Soriano i think was not signed was it would of cost a 1st round draft pick, otherwise i think he would of been a Tiger

gotta be some teams out their willing to deal

Gregerson has look alright with San Diego, Rex Brothers with Colorodo. Bobby Parnell with the Mets , somebody on the dodgers who will be out of it by than.

stay away from any late inning guys the brewers have.

I might as well ask, is it worth trading Porcello, and moving Smyly in as a starter with Alvarez as a possible 6th starter

just throwing it out their.

Rest assured though, we'll see his dumb ass walking out to the mound again the next time a save is on the line.  Send a fucking child out there to close it, anyone but this damn clown.

This is a loss that will only continue to piss off our starting pitching. JV is not a patient player and I'd expect him to have a heart to heart with DD and Jim.

Only Jim Leyland puts his worst pitchers in the game in the most critical moments.  And he sits guys who could help and subs for them when they do play.  Leyland has a very good career record as a manager, but when has he had little talent?  If the Tigers were in any other division Leyland might have been fired already.  He's addicted to Coke and he doesn't know when to say goodbye to bums.  The sad part is that by the time the Tigers get a new manager their window may have closed.....

It would be naive to think that Leyland doesn't play a key role in cutting players or who the Tigers should pursue.  What do I expect him to do?  Stop throwing Phil Coke into the game in critical moments.  Take Valverde out of the closer role.  Stop sacrificing players already in scoring position, especially on the second AB of the game with a guy hitting above .300.  Play Tuiasosopo more since he is hitting better and getting on base more than their best hitting OF.  Play Don Kelly much less.  I'm sure I can keep going but I'll stop.

I think you've got some other issues to take care of before you get to the outfield. Kelly was a major contributor in two of the wins this past week. Pena needs to see some more at bats. He may not have the best arm behind the plate, but I think he makes up for it with his bat and hustle. And it's not like Avila is throwing out every base runner. Let's not even mention his bat.

I agree that the offense has been underwhelming, but the Royals are the only team giving up fewer runs than the Tigers, and no matter how many stars you have in your lineup, good pitching will almost always cancel out good hitting.  Unfortunately the Tigers horrid management and Phil Coke\Father Fat will continue to make average hitters look like world beaters.
