OT: Thursday night drinking thread & Michigan Beers

Submitted by taistreetsmyhero on

To kick off the night's drinking thread, I thought I'd share my recent beer drinking story.

I got a pretty neat birthday gift back in December--my girlfriend went to 8 Degrees Plato Beer Co in Ferndale, MI and picked out 25 beers from Michigan to celebrate my 25th birthday.

Neither of us are beer aficionados by any stretch, so many of the beers were new to me. We split one of the beers between us about every other night for the last month and a half and recently finished them all. List of the 25 beers in order that we tried them, with my favorite ten bolded and ones I hadn't tried before italicized:

Full Circle

North Peak's American Wheat IPA

Bell's Christmas Ale

Good Humans

Jaw Jacker

Mayan Mocha Stout

How Now Brown Cow

Phat Abbot Ale

Bell's Cherry Stout

Greenbush White winter ale

Atwater's Purple Gang Pilsner

1825

Loch Down

North Peak's Chocolate Stout

Bell's Midwestern Pale Ale

Bell's Two Hearted

Bean Flicker

Crooked Tree IPA

Closure Ale

Greenbush IPA

Atwater's Dirty Blonde

North Peak's IPA

Bell's Third Coast

Huma Lupa Licious

Oberon

-----------

Some thoughts:  I really like beer. Also, I had no taste for IPAs until I tried all these beers. I still can't get behind Huma Lupa, but maybe with time.

So, MGoFriends, what's on tap?

My wife and I came up from Cleveland for the Northwestern basketball game last month. We had the Odd Side Citra Pale Ale at Ashley's and it was delicious. Still trying to find a way to procure more.

Grapefruit? Orange Peel? Does anyone here drink hard liquor? Christ.  Enough with the craft-beer hipster bullshit.

disagree that water, barley, hops and yeast is the only way to make a quality true beer. Humans have been making beer across the globe since around 5000 BC using various ingredients. A true beer can be anything

you aren't tasting true grapefruit (unless it is a grapefruit base beer). Although, many varieties of hops give near identical flavor and scent to a grapefruit based upon how they are used. Nelson, chinook, and cascade are great examples of both.

EDIT: It seems as if I missed the sarcasm.

Most of the people on here like both beer and alcohol. I keep multiple types of beer in my fridge, from Bud Light to Lagunitas to Ommegang. I also keep Grey Goose, Crown Royal and various types of scotch on hand.

Sorry you hate having variation, taste and new experiences. You probably eat at the same restaurant 16 times a week.

Calling out people for liking something you have never even had the breadth of intellect to even think about trying makes you sound like a pouting 17 year old kid who just had his GF taken by the class nerd.

"Calling out people for liking something you have never even had the breadth of intellect to even think about trying..."

Yes, because thinking about trying grapefruit beer takes an incredible amount of brainpower. Lol. You're cute.

.. I drink the spirits.  Generally Manhattans, but often just a good Scotch or Bourbon.  I will say lately, I've been very fond of Bulleit.  For making mixed drinks like Manhattans, I find it a pretty good value.. can find the Rye Whiskey around here for about $27 and their bourbon at a similar price.  Honestly, the best thing I've found lately is buying some Luxardo maraschino cherries, makes drinks so much better.

Tonight though, I'm going beer... drinking a He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's Rye Double IPA.  Pretty good, not great, but very drinkable for being a 10% beer.  I just struggle dropping $15 bucks for like 4 beers, when for the equivelent of 16 craft beers in that price range, I can buy a good bottle of Scotch, like Laphroaig.

group of brews.  I wish more Michigan beer were available to me here in VA.  I'm currently drinking an Alewerks Cafe Royale.  If you've never had it, then I highly recommend it. They've been brewing it for about 4 years and it is a solid 4/5 in previous batches, but they changed the barrel provider for the new batch.  It is a near perfect BBA stout now. I would give it a 4.75/5 all day long.
