OT - Summer Vacation / Plans?

Submitted by Nickel on May 20th, 2022 at 1:01 PM

I don't think we've had a 2022 summer plans post yet? With it being a Friday and just a week away from Memorial Day weekend, are you heading up north to a cottage? Visiting a national park? Sitting in the plastic pool in the backyard?

I'll be traveling north to see some family in northern (lower) Michigan, taking the SS Badger across the lake to Manitowoc and then spending the summer in Montana generally enjoying trails in the mountains on the weekends.

Whatever your plans, I hope they're full of great memories and that we all get to and from them safely.

Have fun at the F1 race! I wanted to go to the Miami race down here and contacted an agent to set everything up right after it was announced and was put into a queue until the tickets were available. Apparently the entire race sold out in less than an hour, so my alternate plans are Montreal or Mexico in the future. Both are cheaper and probably a lot more fun compared to Miami Gardens. No desire to hit COTA.

I'm just sitting around waiting for a day that has both a high temp above 70 and less than 30mph winds. Looks like it might not be until June ...

Going to Banff and Glacier at the end of June through mid July.  Driving out there with some family and bringing the RVs.

Just got back from Scotland.  Beautiful country once you get out of the Glasgow/Edinburgh area.  Edinburgh was wonderful, Glasgow not so much.  Isle of Skye was great as was Islay.  Distillery tour at Laphraoig was the best of the half dozen or so I went on.  Lots of unbelievably good seafood near the coasts/islands.  Will definitely go back some day to do the 500 loop and visit the outer Hebrides/Orkney.

Very cool.  We went to Scotland a few years ago and really enjoyed it.  We stayed in Inverness for a few days at a B&B, as well as Edinburgh.  Loch Ness is a must see - one of the really beautiful lakes in the world.  In Edinburgh we went to this strange whisky place called the Scotch Whisky Experience (or something like that).  They had this Epcot like ride that was pretty amusing.  One of the surreal experience we had was driving on this narrow road through the bottom of a valley with steep walls on both sides.  At one point all of a sudden we see these two fighter jets come screaming toward us down the valley at low altitude and zoom over us, scaring the shit out of me in the process.  Evidently the British military uses the terrain in Scotland for pilot training, as it mimics areas of the Middle East they might fly missions in.

I picked up my dad in Lansing to bring to my home in San Diego, I almost jumped out of the train at somepoint! Bumping knees while eating off a little table, swinging side to side banging head on side of train while "sleeping", memories! I did stop a couple hours short of LA and had wife drive to pick us up. Some people love trains!

Going to camp a few days over Memorial Weekend at Fort Custer in SW Michigan, then head to the UP for the rest of that week. Kids have never been to the UP, and I haven't been up there since 2012. We'll see the locks, pictured rocks, attempt to hike Mt. Baldy if the kids aren't too whiny, and go to Mackinaw Island. It'll be a fast week. Otherwise, no plans for me, although the wife and kids are going to Santa Fe for a week in mid-June.

Ah, Florida, lovely.  Definitely possible to do the country in 3-4 days, but very aggressive.

I have some buddies in London that used to do 3 day weekend trips to Vegas each year.  I guess that's one place where you don't have to care much about having a normal sleep schedule.

They also used to fly stateside for friends wedding for just three days as well.  Rough.

Taking a pandemic delayed trip to Spain in June.  Sandwiched around that is as much time as we can possibly take in Canada at our beach home along Lake Huron.  We were locked out of Canada for 18 months and only got to catch the tail end of summer last year which wasn't very relaxing given we had to clean up 18 months of neglect around the house.

I'm in education, so get my summers off. Already have a trip to Traverse City with some friends planned, a lake cabin near Kalamazoo with the family and a golf trip to Treetops. Visiting my girlfriend's family in Iowa at some point as well.

I have partial regret about not booking flights to an Alaskan cruise. The prices are absurd and we're getting to the point where we're going to have to drop $4000 to fly 4 of us out to Seattle.

ouch, re: prices.

can confirm though that alaska is the best.  have been many times, long-time friends up there, etc.  so much to do, the beauty is unmatched, wonderful trip.  planning on taking the twins out there next year.  the 4 oldest have all had special trips with me up there, and now it's the twins' turn.

re: internet + just all the stuff of life which you step away from on a trip like that.  i hope you bite the bullet and do the trip.  depending on your interests i might have some ideas on where/what/when to do and go.  i have been spoiled by my buddies up there, but have learned a lot in the 30 yrs i've been visiting.  i don't know if you'll be on the boat for most of the trip, but if you tell me the ports you'll be at i might have some suggestions.  most of my time has been in southcentral and southwest and in the gulf of alaska and PWS, but not all of it.
