OT: Favorite games to play on the golf course

Submitted by 502sezGoBlue on August 12th, 2021 at 10:34 AM

Heading out to the golf course this weekend and, as usual, our group has a full spectrum of skill sets. Rather than play typical match play, skins, a scramble, etc, we’re always looking for games to play with some money on the line to keep things interesting.

In the past, I’ve played ‘Wolf’ and ‘Stableford’ to name a few.

For the golfers out there, what is your go-to golf course game and what are the rules?

Beer Par.

Each person is expected to drink one beverage per 2 holes (par). Add a stroke for not finishing a drink. Subtract a stroke (or two if you're nuts) for finishing more than one.

Combine with a scramble and have a beer par for the entire team. That way, the terrible golfers can still contribute by being degenerate drinkers. 2 finished drinks per team, per hole.

(Note: Every time we've ever played this, it ends with everyone saying 'never again')

EDIT: Beer par is .5 drink per person per hole. Not 1 drink. Yikes.

Traditional name is Bloodsome but me and my buddies call it "Fuck the Driver".  2 v 2, each team gets to choose which ball the opposing team plays from.  Sometime's we'll scramble from there, sometimes we'll do a best ball match play.  We love it because we're all pretty solid (all have handicaps below 5) and it puts a lot of pressure on the tee shot.

Bingo, bango, bongo is good for a mixed skill set. On each hole one point is awarded to the player that is first on the green, one point to the player that is closest to the pin, and one point to the player that makes the longest putt.   Assign a dollar value to each point and pay up at the end of the round.  Less skilled players can still score points over more skilled players so it keeps it fun.

We have an annual golf trip with a WIDE spectrum of skill sets so we struggle to find games that allow some level of parity and gives everyone a shot to win the green jacket over the course of the weekend (5 rounds).

I love modified stableford where you can adjust points based on skill level. For example, the golfer who shoots mid-70s might would get less points for a birdie than a bogey golfer, and would be more penalized for triple-or-worse. It's taken a few trips to tweak the point system enough to make it reasonable.

I've never played Wolfhammer, but I have played Wolf and I don't care for it. The main reason is that once you get to the last few holes, there's too much gamesmanship where players will take other players for no other reason than to stop them from earning more points. I prefer games where you can catch up with good holes up until the very end.

Our trips have become a combination of modified stableford in the mornings and 2-man scrambles in the afternoon, and seems to work well for the group.

I had never thought of combining golf and the caber toss, but their Scottish origins make a natural pairing. Golf to the green, then caber toss to the hole?

Interestingly, the caber toss tests skill and precision as much as brute strength. Assuming you can flip the caber, you win by landing your caber closest to straight ahead, not by throwing farther than the other lads and lasses.

I like to see how far OB right I can hit my tee shot. Then I like to see how badly I can fat/thin my next 4 shots before three putting. It's a lot of fun, try it sometime.

the golf threads on this board are painful.

play scotch if you have mid to low handicaps and a little bit of time. best ball to keep things moving if mid to high. 9 point if you're just a threesome.

Vegases are great. It can get steep over 18 so it’s best when all players are fairly consistent.

FYI in a $1 Vegas - if team a shoots 4-5 and team b 5-6 then team a wins $11 that hole. If scores are 3-4 and 6-6 then low score takes 66-34 = $32. And there’s all types of variations. Fun game for degenerates

Best 3 man game is 9 ball.  9 points available for each hole split three ways. 5/3/1 or 4/4/1 or 3/3/3 or 5/2/2, depending on the outcome of each hole.  Can be played for 9 holes or 18.  Keeps you focused every hole - never out of it

See my post above.

Also, 9 point is best played with birdie doubles and sweeps. Sweep = If any player wins the hole by net two they take all points available on that hole, including x2 if you're playing birdie doubles.

It's also more fun to incorporate rolls and presses and there are a number of ways of doing so. If total points available never gets above 9 it can become a snooze.

High/Low

Essentially Team Match Play with 2 points available each hole. Each hole you look at you and your partners low (net) score vs the other team to determine a point and then compare your high score to determine a point.

You might win the low and push the high, or you could, you win the low and lose the high there's no blood. You lose both and 2 points are given out.

Most of the time only one  or no points are exchanged. You can do it as a Nassau for Front/Back/Overall.

Scotch

take the high and low players on a team and the two middle on the other

the team with the higher handicap gets strokes on the holes where they fall ( they go to hte higher players total )

2 points for low ball

2 points for total

1 point for prox ( closest to the pin in regulation)

1 point for birdie

5 points for an eagle

If you get a birdie or eagle and all other points the total gained is doubled

you can press - double the bet for the remainder of the 9

roll - double the bet for the hole

re roll - if rolled an opponenets hit a bad shot

Pressing can only be done once a side when behind ( each team can press once if behind)

THe team leading in points always tees off first and thus can only re roll

my favorite game is finding a better quality ball than the one i hit into the woods....

a close second is 'create a new cuss word'

and i usually end up playing 'i really don't give a fuck' for the last two or three holes.
