OT: Detroit Lions - Free Agent Frenzy/Who do you draft

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on March 12th, 2019 at 9:52 AM

So the Lions go out and pick up a starting DE (Trey Flowers), starting slot corner, starting slot receiver (Amendola) and best available free agent tight end (Jesse James). Good on them for trying. So many of the glaring needs get filled

That said most mock drafts had them picking a DE (possibly Rashan Gary) or TE (Iowa’s Hockenson). So what position/player do they take with the #8 pick? I guess the remaining open starting positions are offensive guard (now that Lang was cut), safety (after Glover Quin was cut) and #2 corner. Do they go offensive line for the third of the last four years? Does this usher in LSU’s Greedy Williams even though the guy doesn’t tackle?

Quarterback, seriously.  I'm tired of his less than 10% winning percentage vs .500 or better teams. I'm also tired of all the stafford apologists who always deflect blame to others, when has he manned up and gotten the job done???

Also, our GOAT Tom Brady consistently takes less money so that the Pats can try a field a winner. stafford always want the most and still has beyond subpar results.

EVERY single quarterback/player for that matter takes the most money they can get.

Might want to also look into the whole TB12 scam that Brady and Patriots run to make up for the loss in salary. Not to mention the fact the guy's wife also makes between 15-30 million a year as well. End of the day his W2 is probably higher than any player in the NFL.

Maybe I live under a rock, but please do enlighten me about this the "whole TB12 scam" as how are the Pats paying him more money via this?

Many players in all sports take less or renegotiate their contracts to help their team WIN!  Something that stafford would never do.

Not sure why you bring Gisele into the discussion?  These other qbs could also marry supermodels.  Or if you are bringing up the fact that since she makes a lot, he can take less money, which proves my point again.

This stat of all the great comeback wins in the grand scheme of things is literally meaningless.  His record against .500 teams is still at a putrid 10%, thus most of these great, epic comeback wins were against losing teams, so we should congratulate him for winning against bad teams.

Also, you get these comeback wins because a) your defense screws up, or b) you didn't score enough against these sub .500 teams in the first 3 quarters which would be on stafford.

Sad, other teams/qbs measure themselves by Super Bowl wins, conference or division championships, the fans of the stafford point to this meaningless stat, and don't forget your messiah stafford has ZERO playoff wins - Tebow has more!!!

No ...... recognize he got the job done 26 times, coming back in the 4th quarter to win games they would've lost.

You want to put that number in context, the Lions have only won 70 games since Stafford was drafted ....that means one third(37%) of their wins were on 4qtr comebacks by Staff.

He's no messiah but he ain't the problem.

according to a recent business insider article that analyzed his career earnings of tom brady:

  • The conservative estimate put his contract discounts at $60 million, but could have been closer to $100 million.

so i would say he's taking a significant discount.  from 2013-17 eight QBs rec'd more cash than the $70mm of Brady; Flacco got $112mm.  those all include the bonuses.

Tom Brady also has a wife who is worth more than twice what Brady is. That makes it easier to take team friendly discounts.

Also, in terms of his winning percentage against winning teams, most quarterbacks don't exactly have great records against good teams. There were at least 4 situations in Staffords career where losing would have given him a better record against winning teams. He has a better winning percentage against teams with a winning record than Kirk Cousins. He's also 8-22 in his last 30 games against teams above .500 to end the season, which isnt great, but is a fucking far better record than 9-62. It's wild that literally every qualified NFL Quarterback analyst is like "No this dude is really freaking good just give him a solid coach and decent supporting cast" and every armchair fan is like "Dude couldn't even beat the Bears or Rams without his starting receivers and Jim Bob Cooter calling the plays, what a fucking Bum"

DL please.  You can never have enough pass rushers.  Greedy would be a solid pick up as well.  No offensive players in the first round.  Snag Damien Harris in the 3rd-4th round

If they draft a TE I will be incredibly upset. Personally, I'd love to trade down to get two first rounders. We have lots of holes (or potential holes in the next year as players age). I would go DL, LB or DB with the first round pick. I don't think we could go wrong with any of those position groups. I'd love to go after two of those position groups with two first rounders if you trade down. Then get a TE or WR in the second or third, or BPA on defense.

Explain how Devin White is different than Jarrad Davis (other than being better)? You'd have two linebackers with the almost identical skillsets.

At least Devin Bush gives you some differentiation in talent from what he brings to the table when placed next to Davis.

I don't disagree with the principle (they do need better LBs), but Davis is their best LB right now. Getting an LB who plays the same position and style doesn't help Davis or make things easier on the defense. It's like saying you need better offensive lineman but then you draft an OT when you really need a guard or a center.

So I wouldn’t mind if the lions traded stafford for a first and took kyler with the 8th pick if he’s still there. I really don’t know how the top 8 will play out. I’d be fine if they kept stafford too.

Players I think they should target with the 8th pick are greedy, Ed Oliver, devin white, and kyler only if they can trade stafford.

He’s getting paid regardless. Murray would give a fresh start. There are teams desperate enough to give a first for stafford. Look I’m not saying they should or shouldn’t trade him. I’m saying I’d be fine either way but only if it meant getting Murray with the 8th pick.

by round I would do this

1. Best DT available (or DE if no top DT left)

2. CB/S

3. WR

4. OL

5. DL

6. LB

6. CB/S

7. DL/LB

7. OL/DL
