I'm not joining the crew overreacting calling the defense garbage, but I gotta say that 4th quarter was real, real rough. MSU got shut down in the 2nd and then all of a sudden in the 4th we couldn't do anything.

Hopefully it doesn't lay a blueprint for OSU. Either way, a win is a win! State sucks!

I thought the D mailed it in the second half. If we were playing a higher powered offense, the game may have been in danger.

When they were playing hard, I didn't think MSU had much they could do. That's why we seen every QB they had.

the O mailed it in during the second half; they had 27 at the half then couldn't do anything.

The D, on the other hand, was uninspiring for both halves.

I hate how Sparty saves their best game for Michigan every year.  I had hoped for an old-fashioned Sparty drubbing this year, but it wasn't to be.  Instead it was an uncomfortable game to watch, and Michigan's D looked listless outside of the 2nd quarter.

Rushing D concerned me today, especially knowing that the State QB's weren't that big a threat.   Things to clean up.  At least we won on the road while not playing perfectly.

the outcome of the game is not what I'm commenting on. I'm saying the defenisive gsme was not to the standards that we believe our defense is. Not to mention our offensive line--which was fine, but not dominating a very poor d-line for sparty.

advocate, or even we were exposed as not elite.  However, JD played somewhat average and seemed 'off'.  For as supperior as our Front is billed they had a hard time keeping msu OL from getting to the second level on out Lbackers.  I thought Gedeon and McCray played average.  In totality I believe the UFR will show our D was maybe a little above average today.  Great in the first half and not so much in the second half.  Not sure what all went into the perfomance (hard to put my finger on it) but we seemed 'off'' enough not to be elite.  I believe wer are elite and we did not show that in the second half.

At first my thoughts were the score indicates the game was closer than it was.  Upon reflection I think we did not do enough on O or D to show how much better (I and so many others) we are/should be?  We were on the road and I think still working through a bit of mental PTSD (appologies to anyone that suffers with that) in regards to really believing we are better than msu anytime we step on the field with them.

I will also say that I think Peppers play at the end is a statement that the tide has turned.

When you play 12 games, you don't always have great games.  Really good teams win the games when they are not up to their usual standard.

We are 8-0 for fuck's sake.  Harbaugh is 18-3 since he became our coach. When is the last time that happened? Sparty's QB's are sitting in whirlpools so they can loosen up enough to walk.

Calm down people, calm down.

MSU proved that a team can run the ball against our defense if they have a little bit of talent and put forth the right effort. We still have to improve, just when we thought we were near perfect.

...playing at Iowa at night then I was to start the day. Rivalry games are always tricky but the D was carved up a bit, especially in the running game. Charlton wasn't holding the edge, McCray was whiffin and even Jourdan was a bit off. Stiffened when we needed to though.I should be happier at 8andO and #2.

Really struggled against the run, tackling was poor, but I was most shocked with the lack of pass rush.

Got stops when we needed to, some clutch red zone D, but not our best performance. Win and advance that's all that matters.

poorly.  The holding on almost every play - some were egregious - certainly exacerbated the effect, but our DL could not disengage and really applied very little pressure.

If the MSU OL is garbage like the first 7 games and everyone's assessment leading into the game, then our DL just played a mediocre or worse game.

Also surprised at Brown's inability to speed them up, get pressure with blitzes or generate turnovers.

Overall, the defense deserved maybe a C or C- grade today.

He had a great first half. Then in the second he was nowhere near the play on the arm-punt that extended MSU's drive to make it 30-17, then he got a PI call and got lost on the one throw to the end zone.

The defense on the whole was horrific today except in short yardage situations.

Every unit is going to have bad game - fortunately the offense bailed out the defense. The defense definitely bailed out the offense earlier in the year. Throw in the fact that all of the pressure to win this game was on us, I'm not surprised they looked a bit tight. We need to build a culture of expecting to win these rivalry games - step 1 just happened. Hopefully this lesson will help them against Iowa and OSU.

Like others, I was a little perturbed with the run defense, although I think we kind of expected MSU to emphasize the run in the absence of a more than middling passing game at best. It came out to 217 rushing yards allowed on 42 carries, or 5.17 yards per carry. Through the air, 184 yards on 13 completions in 28 attempts, or 6/57 yards per attempt and 14.15 yars per completion.

401 yards total across 70 snaps for MSU comes to 5.73 yards per play allowed overall, and 23 points across 70 plays is 0.329 points per play, which is nearly double the team average on defense before this game.

The first half wasn't great, but it was acceptable.

The second half was a steaming pile of manure.

There is no way... none... that they beat OSU playing like that unless the offense goes lights out.

But they made the plays in crunch time that won us the game. Nothing to be worried about; we knew MSU was gonna give Michigan their best shot.

the refs to suddenly call no holds.  Glasgow was held the entire game and it wasn't even questionable. Taco was held on a few ridiculous plays in the 2nd half.

The refs have to call holds that create alleys 3 yds wide between the tackles.  The D also has an obligation to break those holds and disengage, but the interior holding was appalling.

The offiiciating was atrocious on numerous occasions.  It was like NFL officiating with the intent to keep the TV audience by preventing a blow out. I usuallly see officiating as equally bad for both teams, but it was lopsided today.

Good guys still won.

That sure didn't look like a number 1 defense in the country to me. I am absolutely furious with that 4th quarter effort. Definitely hope we got a bad game out of our system and can move forward.

Urban will pitch a ten with this film. Be interesting to see UFR. I saw a lack of want-to today. But, second road game; really first. And, it's a W. Move forward!
