META: The New Banner + iPhone homescreen icons

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

Just noticed the new banner. NOICE! Gotta love the look of exasperation on JH's face. It makes me wonder, is he responding to the refs, or me?

Question for the admins or smartphone smarty-pants'es: Is there a way to have the site bind the icon on my iPhone homescreen to have a persistent image like that or else maybe the podcast icon, instead of refreshing to an iscrutably small image of whatever the latest post is?

FWIW the decision to withdraw support of the MGoBlog app (both the original and the HD versions) will go down as one of the worst in this site's storied history. I find myself engaging with content here much less frequently than when I could simply use the app. Really dumb.

Not trying to troll, legitimate question here - why not just use the mobile site?  If it's a matter of an extra button press or two, why not bookmark the mobile site?  I agree, the app was way better than 2.0 on mobile, but at this point, the 3.0 site on mobile is pretty good, and not dramatically different than the app used to be.  I'm just curious what you think the app would add or make easier that you can't do with the mobile site now?

I honestly don't have a good reason why, I just don't like using safari/chrome/whatever on my phone. I know it's irrational, but it's just a dumb preference. The experience is better when in a standalone app. Seems like a lot of people I talk to are on the same page.

Could make the same argument that using mobile sites is just as good for a lot of things (news sites, facebook, whatever.) People just like apps more.

I believe the site developers would have to code one in there so it gets picked up by Safari before you add the shortcut to your homescreen. As a workaround though, it seems Safari just grabs a sample of what is on your screen at the time you save the shortcut to your homescreen. So you can zoom in on something you'd prefer to be the icon and get a better result.

I asked about a bookmark/favorite/iphone app icon too, but not sure if it was ever seen. The dev team just needs to implement a "favicon" code/image and it should work when people bookmark the site

Quick icon I made if anyone is able to code it in:
