[LOCKED] Are masks required at Yost for the hockey game on Saturday?

Submitted by oldblue on October 7th, 2021 at 12:54 PM

Any news about basketball at Crisler?

EDIT - Locking this for the usual reasons, of course. Some people cannot help but be tossers and wankers about mask requirements, even when the question was purely informational. - LSA

Yes. They’ve been required for all campus buildings so it’s been extended to Yost (unless eating or drinking) and likely will be for Crisler as well. They should probably just get rid of food and drink at Yost and Crisler too so you don’t have the entire stadium taking masks off to eat/drink. People can survive for 2-3 hours without. But hey, what do I (or science) know.

I'm someone who typically sips water throughout the day.  I feel better physically and mentally when I do that.  Being denied that for 3 hours would matter to me.

If you want to tell me "you're vaccinated, but you need to wear a mask to watch the game", my response will be "fine, OK."

But if you also say "you are also not allowed to drink water for the next 3 hours", my response would be "That's absurd.  You already have a mask policy.  Whatever incremental public safety benefit comes from also having this no water rule, I do not find it to be worth the cost.  I will not be attending this game."

At some point, cost vs benefit comes in.  A no eat/drink policy seems like the incremental costs are way higher than the incremental benefits.

How about you bring one in your pocket just in case they are?

Do people really not at this point just have a mask in their pocket at all times in case the need for it arises?

So an anecdote from yesterday.  I live in Broomfield County, Colorado - my barber is in Louisville, Boulder County, Colorado.

I drive up there.  And learn from the sign on the door - Boulder County evidently has an indoor mask mandate now.  Nowhere else in Metro Denver has this, but Boulder County does.  (seriously, I live 5 miles away and never heard about this being instituted a few weeks ago).

OK, fine.  Go back to my car, take a cloth mask out of my glove compartment, put it on, get my haircut.

Now the mask kind of smelled and was gross.  You know, because it's been sitting in my glove compartment unused for weeks, in a hot Colorado summer.  But is that not much different from just carrying a mask around in one's pocket?

If these mandates are actually useful (I won't offer an opinion on that), it seems like they should be state-wide or not at all.  You get these regional policies, nobody even knows 95% of the time, and that leads to people wearing unclean and gross and dirty masks - which is arguably more harmful than not wearing a mask at all.

I'm convinced anyone who brings a question like that to a message board is intentionally trying to troll or create a flame war.

Is it really that hard to get accurate information from a more reputable source than random message board posters?

The goalies, at least, will be wearing them. The skaters, too, though I think those are more often referred to as a cage or faceshield than a mask.

I was going to get tickets to hockey until my wife reminded me A2 is on their mask kick.

decided not to go.

won't be going to crisler either until this mandate is over.

just not worth it to overspend on tickets and have to sit their like a leper.

The irony of virtue signaling due to a hypocritical, asinine, double-standard between indoor arena policies and sardine-can stuffing 100k+ at the Big House is thick.

(And don't give me the "its outside so its different" b.s.)

But it's outside and it's different.

Nobody says masks are perfect or the policies make sense in all circumstances even when applied at a University level, but the science and common sense support it.  It's an easy and small thing to do in order to support your team if you choose to attend. Or not.

I'll attend w/ my kids and wear a mask and it will be a bigger deal for me than them.

But it's NOT different.  You just choose to view it that way, and that's fine.

Being outside at the Big House is not the same as being outside at say a UM softball game.

Your space at the Big House is constricted far more than in any other stadium at UM.

You are exposed to tens of THOUSANDS more people under those conditions.

And the science and common sense are definitely divided on mask efficacy, but keep going on stating it as fact.

And you are free to restrict and muzzle your children however you choose.

It's not a comparison. Lots of old, frail and obese people die from things that are no danger to most people. Some of those things are communicable diseases. Some are not.  Most are "preventable" (colds, falling down, heart disease, etc.) and those at risk conduct themselves as they want.

None of this has anything to do with mask efficacy either BTW.

I don't care to throw my hat in the mask debate, but I just want to point out that "virtue signaling," as it is currently used, is effectively meaningless as a phrase, as literally *any* opinion, interaction, or outwardly expressed thought one has can be accused of being virtue signaling.

"I want to wear a mask" sure, virtue signaling.

"mask policies are b.s. I refuse to wear them" regret to inform that's also virtue signaling.

If you accuse someone of virtue signaling all you are doing is projecting your beliefs onto others. Those with a thesaurus on hand may find that another way to say "projecting your beliefs" is "virtue signaling"

Some Michigan grads got into the school because they are really, really good at working hard, following directions and telling teachers what they want to hear.

Others got in because they are intelligent, critical thinkers who believe an opinion has to hold up to scrutiny.

These mask policies have really accentuated those differences.

1) There was a post last week I believe that specifically answered this question.

2) You could have just searched mgoblue.com or typed into google "masks yost arena"

3) Have a nice day :)
