Jim McElwain to Michigan as OC/WR Coach

Per Sam Webb via Twitter. Still some ambiguity on his specific duties as the 10th assistant. Edit: Offensive Coordinator/Wr Coach (Per UMbig11.)

JM is one f-ing great OC and can game-plan Urban / others out the wazoo !!! I like Drevno dedicated to OL and run game - that is his expertise. Pep definitely knows what he is doing training QBs. If they can all play nice in the sand-box, this could be the ticket. Trust JH. Go Blue !!!

If he has family stuff going on right now, I hope he takes a step back and focuses on that. He can't delegate being a dad and husband to coordinators. And I hope no one responds by saying he's paid crazy money to make the team his life. He could have gotten the same money elsewhere in the pros for less work. We're lucky to have him as part of the Michigan family.

Lloyd Carr started off with Fred Jackson as his OC. He demoted him to assistant HC before the 1997 season. He was assistant, then associate HC for the rest of Carr's tenure. Of course he was also the RB coach.

Pep was the assistant HC last season. It will be interesting to see the exact titles. Maybe he stays there and Drevno will be the higher ranking associate HC.

We need someone to get a passing attack going. You can not keep running on a defense that is keeping 9 or 10 in the box. I think we were one of the easiest offense to defense against in all of college football. Hopefully, one of our QB will emerge to be a good passer.

I know McElwain has a good OC background and a head coach does not always fully control the offense, but I’m kind of surprised by this hire. In the two games he coached Florida against Michigan, Florida’s offense was horrible. I mean, really horrible. Harbaugh knows what he is doing when it come to hiring people. I’m just not sure what he sees based on what we saw in those two games.

The shark thing aside, I wasn’t that impressed by anything he did at Florida. I didn’t see anything there that screamed “fantastic football mind in a toxic environment.” Here’s hoping I was wrong.

Agreed.  I've watched several FLorida games, including our own, and I'm scratching my head to think of anything in the playcalling that was compelling.

I'm going to have to look at some Colo St video and see what went on there.  I know they had a good offense (although in a league not known for defense).

I guess it could have been a worse hire, but I would hope that is not the goal state for Michigan . . . could have been worse.

But we are where we are.  Fingers crossed.
