I mean, what did he do to earn more? I'm all for him getting paid, but I didn't see anything this past season that screamed "give this man a bag."

Glad he's getting paid, but sometimes you gotta go elsewhere for a raise.

He did enough to earn more -- because he got more. Maybe Michigan valued him differently, or maybe Kansas just has an exponentially larger NIL pool to pull from. It's very possible that the best player at Michigan makes what the 5th or 10th best player/prospect at Kansas gets.

Michigan is back to being a football school, and I have no doubt that the NIL funding is mostly aimed at football players.  Kansas, well, Kansas is a basketball school through and through.  There's no doubt in any world view that Kansas will pay more for basketball players than Michigan ever will.

People are downvoting you, but you're not completely wrong. Dickinson created a bad reputation for himself. He prides himself on being a villain, being inflammatory, and sometimes playing dirty. Frankly, he didn't exactly make himself a super universally marketable player

“A villain” on the court, my god! With most folks on here being Pistons fans, such an assertions that Hunter was so mean and not worth NIL is extremely laughable. If a local business wants good endorsement, why not go for the leading scorer and an Academic All Big Ten.

How can anyone justify that the best player on the basketball team with one of the biggest brands in the world not be making more in NIL? There’s a reason Hunter was #1 in the portal and pursued by blue bloods—including Kansas.

Maybe I should recant my disappointment in Hunter leaving and really blame Howard and the program for not helping out the players get the most out of their NIL capabilities.

When the football team was struggling to recruit that was the #1 complaint here. Now, we are switching to criticizing players and justifying why they don’t deserve what the open market says they’re worth?

Those guys were cool and made the final four. Dickinson looks like he is still learning how to run and led his team to somewhat to straight up disappointing seasons in 2 of 3 years. You get more latitude to taunt when you don’t look so ridiculous doing it and even more when you actually win.

I was a senior when they were freshmen. I was a huge fan of them. I saw all five walking down the street by Hill Auditorium. I wish I had a cell phone camera back then.
A couple things, they were very much about the group. HD seems more focused on HD. They stretched some conventions, but black socks and baggy shorts didn’t bother me.

Hunter was a good player at Michigan.  However, it says something that 1) it hurts more to lose Bufkin, and 2) I am actually happy that Reed is going to play more now.

Dickinson peaked early and did not improve much.  He still missed crucial bunnies all the time and gave up 10 points at a minimum per game by not being able to provide sufficient help side defense because of slow feet.  He was an inadequate rim protector at 7’1.

Was he good?  Yes.  Did he do enough to earn a “new contract” at Michigan?  No.

I would have given ALL the bags to Kobe before giving Hunter another one.

If I had to choose between the two, Hunter is the much more effective Collegiate player.  He was relatively dominant until he wasn't last year.  Bufkin was not Jordan Poole, and Jordan Pool was not Jordan Poole in college.  He was really good, but did not dictate the game like Hunter did.  We may be more fluid without Hunter and better in some aspects on D, but basketball wise, he was a rarity.  Love Kobe, but there are plenty of slight, lanky slashers who shoot decently (not great) from 3 and play good to solid D. HD is much bigger loss (same 3 pt efficiency, bigger body, match up nightmare, and when motivated best-or at least more problematic- player on the court).  No doubt it wasn't clicking last year, in part bc of HD's drop or NBA try out regime on the court (which took him away from some of the things that made him so dominant imo), but I don't think that changes who was the bigger loss.

All that said, we have neither now.  We suck again.

Coaching staff's last stand.  IMO--> If they can make NCAA with this roster, you'd have to say they passed the litmus test.  If they don't make the NIT, we get a new coaching staff.  If they make the NIT, what do you do?

A college basketball game should be something you can take your kids to. HD’s antics are not compatible with an institution of higher learning. It says something that JJ and Corum cleaned up on NIL and HD apparently struggled. I don’t think it is all just football vs. basketball, even if that is the primary difference.

" If a local business wants good endorsement, why not go for the leading scorer and an Academic All Big Ten. "

Because obviously they believe he wasn't a good endorsement... or they would have.

Hunter isn't getting "NIL" money at Kansas for endorsements, or anything else to do with Name, Image, or Likeness. He's getting "NIL" money funneled to him from boosters for playing basketball.

I think it's more likely that the issue is not one of 'Howard and the program not helping players get the most out of NIL', but rather, one of "NIL money for Michigan Basketball is not what it is at more traditional basketball schools".   maybe add a side of "Hunter was less than impressive many nights on the court in the recent season".

Do we really want to be a school where players get paid (much) less than market value?  Sometimes we will get outbid and that happens, and we probably want to avoid most bidding wars, but such a wide discrepancy for one of our better players over the last few years is a bit concerning for me.

And if a school like Kansas thinks he's worth that kind of money, he probably is.

Appreciate all Hunter did for the team and wish him nothing but success in the future. Assuming he got a degree from Michigan, he's leaving out a lot of value in what he received while at Michigan. I also wonder if Kansas fans are going to be lining up to pay for a team that gets bounced in the second round of the NIT? (Of course, they pay now so that doesn't happen I guess.)

BroadneckBlue21

You mean that players shouldn’t be paid until the whole teams win something, even if they show themselves over three years to be the best player on the team? That’s a hard sell to recruits. Hunter wasn’t the reason the team in a team sport failed.

Miami, reportedly, got their portal NIL’s worth with their run. Imagine if they said—come here and, IF we win big, you’ll get paid. Get bounced in NIT second round and we aren’t giving you as much.

Kansas will almost certainly make the tourney with returning starting PG Dajuan Harris who led the Big 12 in assist to turnover and was the DPOY there along with a top 10 recruiting class that includes two 5 stars and two 4 stars.  So, they have experience at the point and in the middle.  Then, add a bunch of young combo guards that will be bringing the ball from every angle.

That's about as good as it gets in college ball.  Hunter is far from perfect, but he should fit into this lineup exceptionally well.  I wish him all the best when he's not playing us.

Basketball NIL is bad. Seems like football NIL is doing okay.

I'm sure with time the basketball NIL will get there, but I am 100 percent okay focusing the initial energy towards football

NIL + transfer portal for basketball is truly the Wild West, since you can literally turn over your entire team in one year. I do think there’s a lot that’s been permanently lost now. Will there ever be another number retired at Michigan? But I recognize you can’t have money grubbing capitalism for the admins and serfdom for the players, which is what we had previously.

This is actually embarrassing for us.  Hunter was an All American and 3x All Big Ten player.  In his first two seasons, he led us to a Big Ten Championship, Elite Eight, and Sweet Sixteen.....then was making less than six figures.  No wonder he left.  Even if you don't believe the $3 million over two years, he's clearly maximizing his earning potential in a way that wasn't happening at Michigan.

Michigan's football pitch has been prove it on the field and you'll see the rewards of it.  It's a bit sad that we couldn't make that happen for basketball.

Basketball is obviously in a tenuous place right now not having a serious NIL program in place puts the program further at risk.

"Basketball NIL is bad. Seems like football NIL is doing okay."

So which came first, the chicken or the egg?  Is basketball NIL bad because the team is bad, or is the team bad because the NIL is bad?  And vice-versa for football?  I think the people who are donating money to NIL efforts are trying to reinforce success and divest from failure, which is a rational thing to do.

The basketball program has been awesome prior to this year.  Even last year ended on a high note with the Sweet Sixteen appearance and optimism heading into this year.  I would have thought there was some appetite for basketball-centric NIL.

Hunter even said Michigan was lagging behind - I believe last offseason.  Basketball the sport where a smaller amount of NIL can make a more profound impact.  1-2 players can drastically shape a season.
