Guess the score, win nothing!

In facing the dreaded Spoilermakers (/s) we have what should be an interesting matchup tomorrow night. Sadly, our first game of the season with Corum fully out. It looks like we are in good hands. After a huge, emotional win last year, the team showed no signs of a hangover. I'm predicting the same this year. Good guys win, 41-17.

Also, as a little bonus, I did a bit of analysis on how CJ Stroud performed last weekend, and found something interesting. On his first 3 drives, he threw 6 screens out of 15 passes, which was a much higher rate than I would have expected. After watching the game enough times, it really stood out how much they relied on dink-and-dunk against us.

If we categorize completions behind the line of scrimmage as screens, within 9 yards of the LOS as "short", between 10 and 19 yards of LOS as "medium", and 20+ as "long", his splits were:

  • Screen: 7/9 for 46 yards, 5.1 YPA, 66 YAC (143%)
  • Short: 17/25 for 147 yards, 5.9 YPA, 51 YAC (35%)
  • Medium: 5/11 for 76 yards, 6.9 YPA, 4 YAC (5%)
  • Long: 2/3 for 86 yards, 28.7 YPA, 24 YAC (28%)

So basically, he was extremely reliant on the plus athletes surrounding him, with over 70% of his passes completed within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. On those attempts, 117 of 193 yards came after the catch (61%).

Michigan hasn't been able to get that many sacks the past few games and if Aidan gets comfortable in the pocket, Purdue is obviously going to have a better chance to win. If Michigan gets home, 42-20 Michigan; if Aidan stays clean, 42-27 Michigan.

45-17 Michigan. Stokes goes off in this game with another non-DE RB having more than 50 yards. We will be walking away with a championship, a new good backup and a decent backup to backup. Oh, JJ will have two passing TDs and 210 yards at 70 percent completion percentage.

38-21

Game follows a script. It’s fairly close at halftime, probably something like 17-14. Purdue makes some plays and O’Connell plays inspired ball under extremely difficult circumstances. But as we get to the second half, the OL just wears Purdue down and their defense can’t get off the field. Minter adjusts and produces a big second half. Michigan doesn’t do anything truly special, but they do what’s necessary to beat an outmatched opponent, win another Big Ten title, and gear up for TCU.

Michigan 42- Purdue 3.

Looking ahead: TCU loses, OSU goes to #3- seed. Michigan revisits the scene in Indiana Jones where Indy shoots the guy doing all of the fancy sword tricks with a disgusted look on his face.
