Gregg Henson: Why Michigan Pulled Matt Falcon’s Scholarship

Submitted by Mr. Flood on

"Sources close to the situation tell me that the Michigan coaching staff advised Falcon to forego his senior year of football and rehab his knee before enrolling at Michigan in January to continue his progress under the direction of the Michigan athletic training staff.  When Falcon and his family decided to play his senior year, the Michigan staff was not thrilled, two knee injuries in one year was a deal breaker for Michigan."

Right now it seems like a very long shot that Falcon is going to be able to play football at the college level due to devastating knee injuries.  Much less, college football at the highest level.  I wish the kid all the luck in world, but Harbaugh and the staff had to make a tough decision that was in the best interest of moving the program forward.  They are still offering to pay for his schooling!  That is very generous and classy.  I know it would be heartbreaking to have your dream school tell you that they no longer think you should play football for them, but this seems to be in the best interest of both parties.

That multiple doctors have said he will be fine and able to play again after rehab. So that raises a flag. I see both parts but I also see where Michigan is coming w the #'s crunch. He should just enroll rehab and then walk back out there and play. Just my opinion

It's not a business.

It's like a business in some respects ($ is involved, there are "corporate" goals that sometimes take precedence over the interests of individuals).

But it's not a business unless you definition of business is so broad as to include any and all institutions (i.e., too broad to have any meaning).

Random story in agreement with your point. Had a contracts professor who used to say, "terms that are capable of having any meaning end up meaningless." I always felt that applied equally to people who stretch the meaning of words to the point that there are no limits as to what the word can encompass.

The word business is a very general term. Webster defines it as :
a :  a usually commercial or mercantile activity engaged in as a means of livelihood :  trade, line<in the restaurant business>
b :  a commercial or sometimes an industrial enterprise; also :  such enterprises <the businessdistrict>
c :  dealings or transactions especially of an economic nature :  patronage <took their businesselsewhere>

Investopedia defines it as an organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial, industrial or professional activities. A business can be a for-profit entity, such as a publicly-traded corporation, or a non-profit organization engaged in business activities, such as an agricultural cooperative.

Cambridge defines it as the activity of buying and selling goods and services.

I would say Michigan's athletic department meets those criteria. Just because it is a government institution does not mean its agents don't have a responsibility and personal interest in maximizing the utility derived from the business (as defined above) they engage in.

If true, it makes sense.  If UM isn't going to let him play football due to injuries BUT will give him a college scholarship for academics AND gives him months to look elsewhere, that seems pretty fair.  Obviously you wish it hadn't come to this, but I have a feeling that for all of the "oh man, what about the scholarship crunch" concerns, people who can be at UM will without too much unseemingliness.

However this ends up for Matt, he is going to get a free college education either at an elite university or a very good one somewhere else. Hard to feel bad for him or think he's being wronged in any fashion.

Not a big deal, he's had TWO knee surgeries! He has a chance to get a free education at UM or go play football somewhere else! What's the big deal? He's got better options than most high schoolers!

I'm just wondering if the staff will regret loading up on the two and lower three star kids when these 4 and 5 star guys are gonna want to commit after seeing what Jim is accomplishing so quickly.

Acting like because we still offered him a medical harsh scholarship that it's okay and he should feel lukcy? I'm happy we have anot her scholarship to fill with hopefully a 5* running back but Falcon got screwed. It was like he finally got to start dating the girl of his dreams, but she said they could no longer have sex, they will still be in a relarionship but that she's going to let other dudes plow her but he can buy her dinner and stuff still.

Because they are supposed to be "student-athletes" with the supposed emphasis on "student". Although probably most of the students have aspirations to play in the NFL, going to college isn't supposed to be a farm system for the NFL. If some kid got an academic scholarship to go to Michigan, drops his GPA and grades in his senior year but Michigan decides to pay for his tuition anyway, how many people would think that to be a bad thing?

I mean if you really wanted to make it an accurate analogy it would be like the girl of your dreams telling you she'd date you if you stopped sneaking around after having the crabs once and then being caught with the crabs again, and she tells you she just wants to be friends.

He had a history of injuries that scared away many colleges in general.

Michigan still offered and accepted his commitment knowing that.

They advised him to not play his senior year of high school and focus on rehab so he could be fully healthy when he got to Michigan.

Falcon and his family decided to play football anyway, and he got seriously injured yet again.

Michigan decides to still offer him a full 4-year scholarship but not an athletic one as he probably can't even physically play football at a high level anymore. Had he listened to Michigan's coaches in the first place he'd probably still be committed with athletic scholly and arriving to play in a few months.

As an MSU fan it is hard to relate to these issues.  I guess OSU and UM can play these games and still get the next 4 star.  MSU operates with more integrity and that seems to be paying dividends.

released from jail.  Reinstaing Glenn Winston right after he was released from a 180 day jail sentence for assault.  Reinstating Delton Williams after he pointed a gun at someone.

This all just screams the integrity of the program.

The funny thing is, even after the last decade of MSU beating us, Ohio State still bothers me more.  You're the only program who could have the run of success you've had and still nobody cares.

Bowl wins, Rose Bowl win, conference wins, and still the only thing that people are screaming for is for Michigan to be competing with Ohio State.  With Harbaugh in the mix that's what it's going back to, but don't worry, 10 years from now I'm sure everyone will be talking about how good MSU used to be.  I'm confident nobody will forget about MSUs little run of success like everyone always forgets about MSU.

Wtf were Falcon and his parents thinking? You already had a spot in the class sooooo what did playing your senior year do for you? We're the Falcons still shopping around? No wonder the kid felt the need to apologize. I feel horrible for him, that sucks...
