Fix the CFP now...please

Easy and clean. P5 champs and top ranked G5 team are in. Teams seeded 1 and 2 draw byes, teams 3-6 play week after the Army -Navy game. 4 remaining teams play on as now. What could be easier? Or fairer? An extra game possible for teams 3-6. Weekly CFP standings (and ESPN) mean little. Anyone see a problem except for the two elephants in the room, ESPN and the NCAA.

P5 conference champs and one wild card. And never ever either a G5 team or more than 6 total in playoff. More than 6 means a lesser regular season and also means teams that do not deserve to get a chance for a NC would be in.

Might lessen the meaning of each individual game, but I think we’d see the end of FCS opponents and more big OOC games. Teams that don’t “deserve” to be in would get in. But I think we already have that at 4 in some years. And every playoff system has teams that don’t deserve to get in. It’s hard to argue that 7-9 NFL teams deserve a shot at the championship or the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference in the NBA. Or Chattanooga St in the NCAAB tournament.

I agree 100%. I'd like to see what UCF looks like playing Clemson or Alabama, or even playing Michigan tbh. There's always those teams in years past where you wonder how good they really are because they are playing a G5 schedule. Also, if you want to be the best and undisputed number 1, then you need to play the best. Otherwise you get UCF playing the role of Nebraska in '97 and a CUP champ playing the role of UM.

the playoffs. There is no motivation for Oklahoma to take Boise seriously in the Sugar Bowl, which after the game every player admitted to. The playoffs are different, and any G5 would find that out, to their dismay

Why is 6 teams better than 8? A bye is too big a reward. Consider this year - you’ve got three one loss conference champs, one of whom would have to play week one. How do you decide which? That’s dumb. Just go to 8 and have a 3 round bracket. P5 champs plus 3 at large, home games week 1. P5 champs, top ranked G5 champ, 2 at large. Yeah, the 8th ranked team probably doesn’t have a reasonable claim to “best regular season” (then again neither does Alabama) but the cut between 6 and 7, plus the controversy over 2 vs 3, is usually going to be worse than having to pick between 8 and 9. This year that would get you the current top 3, plus OSU, USC, UCF, Alabama, and Wisconsin. That’s a good playoff.

Six is the sweet spot with five group of five conferences. If you win your conference you should be in, period. I think people are failing to remember that after we beat OSU in 2003 we were #3 in the poll with two losses. I don't see why the two loss thing is such a big deal, PSU should have been in last year and as much as I hate it OSU should be in this year. Alabama should not be rewarded for not playing in their conference title game again, like 2011.

PSU should not have been in last year, given that they lost by 39 to Michigan.  And OSU should not have been in this year, given that they lost by 31 to Iowa.

Conference championships are basically arbitrary.  If you honestly believe that PSU was a better team than Michigan or Ohio State last year, I don't know what to tell you.  But you're also forgetting what divisions can do.  6-6 UCLA was in the Pac 12 Championship game a few years ago (USC was on probation, IIRC).  They lost, and then they had to get a waiver to play in a bowl at 6-7.  If they had won... you would have given them a playoff berth at 7-6?

Now, personally, I'm a fan of a 24-team playoff, but I seem to be the outlier.  (24/128 is in the same ballpark as 68/350, and it allows for 8 byes).  If you have 24 teams, yes, you give each conference champion a berth, because at least then you can honestly say that every team controls its own destiny at the beginning of the season.  But if you only have 4 or 6 teams, I don't think you can afford to put too much weight on conference championship games.

I like your 6 team plan. But to be honest I think I'd like 8 better. Having two byes seems like a major advantage considering the difference between the #2 and #3 seeded teams are probably going to be very marginal. Just let all 8 teams play the same amount games. A bye week is just too large an advantage for such a subjective ranking system.

That’s only way I’d like to see it expanded. And you’re really getting a 12-team playoff with divisional champs. Seeing teams earn their way into the playoff and eventually a national title for the first time ever would be great. If they don’t go this route, leave it at 4-teams.

I would love the following format:

8 Teams consisting of autobids for the 5 conference champions and 3 at large bids.  The teams would still be ranked by the Playoff Committee 1-8.  First round of tournament games are played on the home field of the higher rated seed.

I think this format emphasizes conference champions and the regular and at the same time encourages teams teams schedule big boy out of conference games and you could actually punish those teams for not scheduling them ie disqualified if you have 2 loses and play an FCS team.  Another advantage is that it gives a G5 team with a strong argument a chance such as the 2006 Boise State team that went undefeated and beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

One last positive, it would finally make an SEC team come north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Heres how it would look this year:

#1 Clemson - #8 UCF @ Clemson

#2 Oklahoma - #7 Wisconsin @ Oklahoma

#3 Georgia - #6 USC @ Georgia

#4 Ohio State - #5 Alabama @ Ohio State

Exactly, if the playoffs get any bigger than the regular season becomes as lame and little watched as ncaa basketball season, and nba, and nfl if there was no fantasy football.  What makes cfb so great is how small the post season is and hwo that makes every game potentially be a playoff game. Just need to make teams schedule better OOC.

The system is clearly broken.  Conf divisions are broken and need to be eliminated to get the 2 best teams to atleast play for their Conf Championships.  I am not saying Wisconsin was a bad team, but give them our schedule and they would be a 2 loss team.  Make it an 8 team Playoff with P5 Conference Champions getting Auto Bids and have 3 at large bids.

Use the New Years 6 bowls as the 1st 2 rounds and rotate them yearly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, conference title games are stupid and serve no purpose. What if the two teams already played? Plus you're subjectively calling those the two best teams in the conference based on how the teams are split. Play a tenth conference game and if two teams tie use the same tiebreaker we have now for divisions.

In my mind UCF should get in not Alabama or OSU.

UCF could actually keep up with Clemson.

I don't want another Clemson-OSU or Clemson-Alabama matchup.

OSU will get their ass kicked again.

I actually think the opposite is true if you went to an 8 team format with 3 autobids.  You would essentially be able to tell teams that you're going to be PUNISHED for not scheduling good teams.

Conference autobidding is stupid and rewards teams for winning what may be crappy conferences, it's also the opposite of a meritocracy.
