Is Dunn's Timeline Moving Up?

Submitted by superstringer on

This is not really new news -- but AP and ESPN reporting that tSIO will release its response to Tresselgate tomorrow:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6746050

This response, according to the articles, is LIKELY to contain self-imposed penalties.  Could include bowl bans, no appearance in Indy for B1G Title, etc.

So... of course I sit around all day asking how this affects UM recruiting.  Hell, I see it's going to rain, I ask how that affects UM recruiting.

Does this move up Dunn's timetable?  He is "still" committed to tSIO, but wanted to see what penalties tSIO would get.  We all thought that meant late October or so, when the official NCAA ruling comes out (after August hearing).  But, tSIO's letter tomorrow will include self-imposed penalties that certainly will be the least of which the NCAA will order.  Thus, if here is a 2-year bowl ban, for instance, Dunn's going to know the minimum of how bad it will be.

Consequently -- maybe a formal Dunn de-commitment is in the off'ing in the near future, hence we can all keep jamming the F5 even more often.

Ehh.. I don't think so. OSU's self penalties will probably not be enough to scare him away. The only ones that might be enough are coming from the NCAA later

As you said, the real penalties won't be until about October.

I think Dunn has said he's sticking with OSU if the bowl ban is 2 years or less.

I doubt OSU will self impose a bowl ban, and certainly not for 2 years.  There's nothing in the original NOA that would warrant it.  OSU is supposed to reveal all they have found out, but I would doubt they will reveal anything too damaging that wasn't in the original NOA.

It's very obvious that OSU is where Dunn wants to be. Unless they get something extremely harsh, which is possible, I believe he'll end up there.

Shouldn't OSU just redshirt a bunch more players if there is a big bowl ban or big dock in scholarships? Then you get a stacked line-up a few years down the line, albeit with more limited options for offering schollies down the line.

In theory, this would be the most practical way to return to contention quickly after the punishment ends.

In reality, there's no way this happens, for at least the following reasons:

  • Fickell has to try to win as many games as possible to try to keep the job.
  • Saving some of your best players and hurting depth -- on top of whatever punishment is imposed -- could yield a team about the caliber of '08 or '09 Michigan, and being bad on the field doesn't help you in recruiting, so that would basically negate the benefits of saving some of those players via a redshirt.

That's not going to make much of a difference. Some of them would redshirt anyway, and it's not that big of a class. Also, I don't know if OSU wants to redshirt guys who could really contribute this year anyway just to get an extra year out of them 5 years from now.

A couple of days ago I heard the response to the NCAA was due tomorrow, but the response won't be available to the public until Monday.

What do they gain by delaying making the response public tomorrow?

The ohio strategy so far has been to do as little as possible and see if they can get away with that. Doesn't seem likely that they will change strategies at this point in the process. I'd figure that their self-imposed "penalties" will involve something along the line of taking away their coaches' ponies, and possibly suggesting to incoming players that they be more discreet when they take free things, but I seriously doubt that they will voluntarily go with a bowl ban or schollie reduction. They're going to have to be taken to their spanking kicking and screaming . . .

This is exactly what I would have said about any self-penlties. See: Tressel 2 game suspension. Whatever.

If they self impose, anything, it's going to be a joke. And unfortunately, at this point, I have to say the NCAA rules enforcement arm is like a toothless old lion, laying in the grass waiting to die. I am beginning to believe that there will be minimal punishment.

Well this is bad news isn't it?  It means that the NCAA is already done with their investigation there and all of the new stuff that was uncovered from the SI article and other sources was probably cleared.  I'm guessing a one year bowl ban and a small reduction in scholarships for a few years.  Kind of disappointing IMO.

Dunn was just in Columbus and we all know that the one question that he definitely asked was "What the **** is going to happen around here?" Now obviously we don't know what the NCAA is going do, but I guarantee you the coaching staff down there already knows what they're going to impose on themselves. Dunn asked and I'm sure they told him the truth because they knew it would be public in the near future. They wouldn't lie to this kid's face to have this guy feeling good about them. The fact that Dunn emerged out of there with his commitment stronger than ever is a pretty strong indicator that the punishments aren't that stiff since we know this kid cares a lot of about this kind of thing.

Remember, this is going to be a response only to the Tat/Tressel-gate charges.  They will punish themselves by removing the people responsible: Tressel and TP.  They will proclaim their crack compliance staff to be on top of all things NCAA related.  In that light a 2-year probationary period will obviouslly be all that is needed.

I don't care about him coming to Michigan. If he comes, fine, but if he doesn't, fine. I'm more interested in kids who want to come to Michigan, as opposed to kids only coming here because their first choice won't provide them with the prime-time playing opportunities.

If I was single, and Scarlett Johansson wanted to take me home from the bar, but I knew the only reason she was willing to sleep with me was because she found out the guy she was originally hitting on had syphillis, I'm not gonna overthink that one. After all, she chose me second out of the dozens of guys who probably propositioned her, so she obviously liked me.  Plus... Scarlett Johansson.

I think that there will be more and (hopefully) serious penalties to come. The "new" president of the NCAA has already said that stiffer penalties would stop some of this crap and I'm thinking they will look to make an example of "Ohio" to show that they will not tolerate this nonsense anymore

Here is what I hope happens:  OSU responds to NOA with ridiculous self-imposed penalties.  OSU is, however, supposed to report all voilations that their compliance staff has uncovered.  This is when the NCAA reveals that what THEY have discovered is significantly worse than what OSU has reported and dumps all over OSU's self-imposed "penalties".

TSIO may decide to be backward-looking in its self-imposed penalties by, for example, vacating the Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas, vacating a number of wins in 2010 under Tressel and the Tat5, etc.  While this approach may strike some TSIO fans as unfair scapegoating, it would send a message to the NCAA that TSIO would appreciate some balance between retroactive penalties and prospective ones, such as future bowl bans, scholarship reductions, etc.  Were the NCAA to go along with this and later issue predominantly retroactive penalties, that would help TSIO's future recovery, especially on the recruiting trail.

Of course, I believe the NCAA HAMMER should fall heavily on the past record and future privileges of TSIO "on account of what they done."  On account of what they done!

Last kid we got all worked up about that comitted to tOSU was Pryor and we all know how that worked out.  Like the commercial says, "Dodged a bullet there"

I'd rather waste badwidth and productive work time on kids that want to be Wolverines
