Conference Tournament Open Thread
Currently flipping between Kansas State-TCU and Minnesota-Northwestern.
Northwestern is awful
Northwestern was -1.5 in this game. I debated making a sports betting account and betting my mortgage on Minnesota lol
Hindsight betting makes dozens of woulda shoulda coulda millionaires on a daily basis!
Lol for sure. And who knows- NW can come back and win. Doesn't look like it though- they might not break 15 this half.
NW up by 2 with 6:07 left....
I'm waiting for the south park vaccination special.
This. This is why I come here. To laugh out loud, often uncontrollably, at the unexpected.
+1
I just watched it. I’ve got to say that considering how much time they’ve had to work on it and how much pure golden material they had to work with, it was....really underwhelming.
I loved the Pandemic Special, but for the Vaccination Special, it felt like Matt Stone and Trey Parker just mailed it in. If you’re going to take a break from full seasons then fine. But when you do these hour long specials you’ve got to make them count.
I felt the same way for the most part

Show hasn’t been all that good in a decade or so at least. I hate saying it as it’s still solid, but really feels less fun and funny.
During the early weeks of the pandemic, I watched the full series over the course of a couple weeks, and the drop in laughs is noticeable.
The show was great for dirty humor in its early days, and then really hit an awesome balance of toilet humor/absurdity/political stuff between seasons 6-9, with season 8 being my personal favorite.
The decline starts around season 10 and is subtle, but the dip becomes more pronounced the further they dived into making heavy-handed metaphors for whatever the political hot button issue was of the day. In addition, the show became very Randy/adult-centric.
The show totally bottoms out around seasons 19-20, and has slightly improved lately.
Dont get me wrong, there are still occasional great episodes, but instead of being every episode, it’s maybe 2-3 per season. Plus the show is a quarter century old which is insane.
It's too bad I'm not ready for bed. Minnesota northwestern would be a nice lullaby.
I just hope Michigan gets another shot at Illinois. It would be nice to give them a front row seat to watch our boys cut down the nets.
The poetic justice that would be. “Hey Ayo, maybe it was you that was holding the team back?” Or “Hey Ayo, we have two banners and you have zero. Which one is greater?”
Real offensive dog, by both teams.
Last I checked, only one player in double figures late in the game....
For both teams ?
Best line of the night "usually when there's a drought that long Willie Nelson and Bruce Springsteen show up and play a concert"
Bricks bricks and more bricks from Minni at the line
Nice win for Lavall Jordan and Butler over Xavier, coming back from a 19 point first half deficit. Xavier probably played themselves off the bubble with this loss.
I can’t stand Louisville but I wanted them to officially bury Duke tonight and not open any tournament doors. Mark Williams with 23 points and 18 boards with 3+ to go. He’s actually starting to look like the recruit he was ranked as the last 10 games.
Too bad for Mark that it looks like the two best coaches for player development over the last 8 years both worked in A2.
He bought into the Coach K hype like a lot of these other kids. Same with Cal at UK.

It feels like the Calipari hype train has really subsided in recent years. For his first 6-7 years, it felt like every year had him putting a top 1-2 pick in the draft.
Its too soon to say the same for Coach K, but I think it may be happening to him as well.
Real nail bitter here!
It is so hard to watch games like this Minny-NW one after being spoiled by our beautiful offense most of the year. It barely looks like the same game
Nothing like eating a 12-0 run to end the game.
And Collinsworth is the best they've ever had.
It is pretty amazing how much hate some of these teams have for offense. I'd make a comparison but I don't want to get scolded.

I feel like Northwestern needs to run the basketball equivalent of the triple option. No clue what that is but it must exist
March 10th, 2021 at 10:38 PM ^
They did! Under Carmody.
Boo Buie is just plain awful. He does nothing but take terrible shots and make dumb plays. The last 5 minutes of that game was a microcosm of his entire season. I'm just bitter because I had NW -2

Blogger Baba Booey bashes baller Boo Buie!
Watched the Big East 8/9 brickfest earlier. DJ Carton scored 17 for Marquette, but Georgetown held them to 14 first half points. This is the side of the bracket recently owned by Villanova, but they look to be down their starting backcourt for the rest of the season. I'm wondering if Georgetown might be tourney darkhorse coming off extended COVID pause at 8-4.
I had been hoping for battle of $5000 suits in the national final between Jay Wright and Juwan Howard, but don't think 'Nova has enough left to get that far. Now hoping for a Juwan Howard/Patrick Ewing battle of the big men sometime in Indy.
Duke is the 10 seed in the ACC tournament. I mean...let that sink in. Hate them all you want, but when was the last time you can remember Duke being this bad and I've despised them since Johnny Dawkins played there.
94-95 they were 13-18, ironically with none other than Chris Collins on that team.

The back surgery year for Coach K, IIRC. I knew there was one in there. My roommate was a Duke UG. Tough to live with that year, though I was happy with the why.
I love how hard Nebraska is playing against PSU. They may have had a dreadful season and deserving of the 14 seed, but you wouldn’t know it by the fight they are putting up. Good on them Huskers. 31-18 Nebby with 3:30 left in the first half.

Maybe having 2-3 days between games helps Nebraska. It's probably the longest between games since the beginning of February. I have watched them off and on and some days they are not entirely horrible.
Ped state with more turnovers than field goals....
North Carolina would give us some issues if we played them. They have 4 big men that all play good minutes. They would gang up on Hunter over 40 minutes.

They lost at home to a lousy Marquette team just 2 weeks ago.
Not scared.
March 10th, 2021 at 11:02 PM ^
Did you say the same thing about Illinois since they lost to a crappy MSU team?
I think UM would beat UNC, but with UNC’s length and athleticism they could be a buzzsaw...Or UM could run them out of the gym like we did 2 (I think it was 2?) years ago...

No. Road loss. And staee didn't lose to 4-13 DePaul.
Conference games are tough. Coaches know coaches to a tee. A non-con home game for a NCAAT seeded blueblood against a sub-500 team shouldn't be in question. Marquette won in the Dean dome by 13.
I watched both games. Staee literally tried to punch all of illannoy in the face to win that one, and Marquette took it to UNC all game. It was pretty much over at the half. I do not expect a buzzsaw.

Fair enough. I don’t see much difference home/road when stands are empty. I was asking honestly, there were many around here that didn’t seem worried about Illinois based on some of their games against inferior opponents and curious if you were 1 (hell I may have been). Either way, if we matched up with UNC right now I wouldn’t feel great about it based on that 1 game of theirs with or without Eli. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if we blew them out or looked bad because their length & athleticism threw us off our game.

I just said some issues, I didn’t say beat us. They are very good inside and rebound the shit out of the ball, part of that is because they don’t shoot well. That’s the key, keeping their guards out of the lane and making them shoot outside, and then rebound their misses. I saw a stat today and the are like 5-4 their last 9 games since Feb 1st and they score 80+ in wins and 50 something in losses. I just noticed they have four guys that are over 6’10 that play a lot of minutes and are skilled. I still think we beat them but it would be a hell of a second round game.

Poor damn Nebraska. Good feelings gone.
March 10th, 2021 at 11:13 PM ^
They take a lot of 3s, just don’t make them. That, and PSU unconscious at the stripe.

One would think ND basketball would be better given how big the overall brand of the school is.
They went to the Elite 8 in 2015 and 2016. They have had a big dropoff after that and haven’t even made the tournament since 2017.

I know Walker Kessler was somebody we wanted at Michigan, but I think Hunter would take him to town.

Remember when this blog was pushing Iowa States Steve Prohm for the Michigan job? 2-22 this year...yikes
watching the first night games there's usually a team that's playing the best ball of their season, ready to pull off some upsets, I don't think that's the case this year.
