Concerts and dining at Spartan Stadium?
Some things had to be done — $6 million on concrete repair, for example. Some things still need to be. “Restrooms, we have to attack,” Haller (AD) said.
Other things are coming. Some perhaps quickly. Like beer at Spartan Stadium, which is being held up by a state law that also prevents alcohol sales at Michigan Stadium.
“Spartan stadium is iconic, historic and people want access to it,” Haller said. “So what's wrong with a couple of concerts a year? What's wrong with someone that wants to have a wedding there? Commencement?

“Spartan stadium is iconic, historic and people want access to it,”
Really?
TRASH TORNADO
It seems that the additional TV $ is needed for other schools besides Maryland and Rutgers to keep up as the article reads as if Sparty already has the windfall spent.

I was going to write "0.5 out of 3 ... not bad."

Iconic, historic, people want to access it...

Considering they have a hard time selling out that football stadium when the football team is playing there, I'd love to know the mass of people who are clamoring to access a third-tier facility when not being used for its intended purpose.

Gathering of the Juggaloes! Be there or be squarerer! Whoot whoot!

I saw U2 there a decade ago, it was pretty cool (it's a pretty steep stadium giving decent sightlines). Think the Rolling Stones played Spartan Stadium a long time ago. They'll need to go w/ artificial turf though.

I heard this the other day on the radio --- I can't validate its correctness but someone said Spartan Stadium is the furthest North college football stadium (FBS, FCS) that has natural grass. Lambeau, of course, has grass in the NFL.
To your point, they would need turf.
September 1st, 2022 at 2:34 PM ^
They make covers to protect the turf for concerts and other events.
September 1st, 2022 at 2:41 PM ^
Interesting. Curious why more schools wouldn't keep the natural grass though if they can easily cover it up and host events year round?
September 1st, 2022 at 3:18 PM ^
Natural grass is more expensive to maintain. Some schools/administrations are simply cheap.

When the Bacon and Beer Festival was held in Mile High Stadium, they'd put those mats down and let people walk on the field. It was great. You could get your picture on the jumbptron drunk and stuffing your face with bacon.

MSU has a Turfgrass Management program that is probably among the best in the world, and they developed the indoor grass tiles that were used for the 1994 World Cup. If any insitution has the will and resources to make natural grass work for a multi-use facility it's them.
Anyone who remembers natural grass at the Big House will also remember that we are known for our Law, Business and Medical programs...

When the grass was being ripped up prior to installation of the FieldTurf in Michigan Stadium in 2003, the stadium was still open to the public during the summer.
I used to run the steps in the stadium in the summer, and one Sunday I went over there for a workout. The grass removal was in process. Since it was a Sunday, nobody was working so I went down onto the field to check things out. There was a section near the northeast sideline where there was a clear demarcation where the grass had been sliced down a foot or so and removed, so I had a good look at the cross-section.
The grass was anchored in an inch or so of dirt. Under that was sand. Once I saw that, it was clear why big chunks of grass were constantly coming loose during games in the Big House.

Pretty sure they had beer at Michigan Stadium for the soccer matches that were held there.
September 1st, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^
I’m guessing it’s different for events not sponsored by the university or the NCAA. You probably get a lot more leeway when it’s a professional sports team that is not representing the university.

How about county fair?
How about leasing the stadium to farmers for their herds?
You consider the stadium to be iconic (LOL), yet you could not afford 6 million out of your 100 million you are going to get? Either it is iconic or a POS that nobody cares about.

The whole "Moo U" knock on MSU has always felt somewhat bizarre.
September 1st, 2022 at 3:58 PM ^
I'll bite.
Why?
I mean they don't even have math as a part of the core curriculum there. How the fuck does one earn a Bachelor degree without having to take algebra? That's like U of Phoenix level rigor.
Reputation deserved in my opinion.
September 1st, 2022 at 4:46 PM ^
You do realize that those that go to MSU for the "Moo U" aspect - agriculture or vet med - have to take a ton of biology, chemistry, math, business (more for ag), etc. classes? And MSU is highly regarded on both fronts?
My job is basically account management and I can tell you I'm a ton more impressed with someone managing a farm (and literally feeding the world) than my job, random finance jobs, advertising, accounting, whatever.
September 1st, 2022 at 4:59 PM ^
You do realize what the fundamental concept of higher education is right?
You do realize that regardless of major there's this academic notion of the whole person concept, right?
...and you do realize there is algebra in farming right?
September 1st, 2022 at 4:14 PM ^
Several members of my extended family went there, and I have a lot of respect for some of their programs (in ecology, and in extensions of ag programs to local food production and communities). But. . . it's a land grant school; in all the superficial ways, at least, that makes it a natural for the Moo U designation. So. . . guess that I don't really get why it's bizarre?
September 1st, 2022 at 4:47 PM ^
That's fair. I guess it's fair to call it "Moo U", but I don't really think that should be viewed as a knock. It's an incredibly important field.

Michigan arrogance (or scUM as sparty likes to call it) mandates we dunk on them.

September 1st, 2022 at 5:10 PM ^
So, someone could actually rent Spartan Stadium. This could be a great idea.
Does anyone know if $50 would be enough to cover a Powder Puff football tournament during an away game weekend?
My guess is - probably 16 teams could be identified - and play a weekend of games there - the natural turf could be easier on the joints - and, the Stadium experience - well, it just might be memorable.

Imagine if they get near equal talent to UM vs our major talent advantage and 50% record vs them the past 2 decades.
That's who.

Spartan Stadium is iconic?
They can’t sell that shithole out even when the team is good. It looks like a concrete waste yard you’d find off the New Jersey turnpike.
