Coaches only remember names of 40 teams. They all know Texas and Charlie Strong. That is how they vote. Not based on performance.

Nebraska is 2-4 and have lost all four on the final play. If Texas is getting votes, Nebraska should be in the friggin' top ten!

Have to take on the burden of alleviating MSU of its ranking.

It will be hilarious if they are ranked MSU 1 spot below us after we beat them. Coaches have a short memory...
October 11th, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
If we beat MSU and they're only one spot behind us, that'd be terrible for us - with a win, we should be comfortably in the top 10.
October 11th, 2015 at 1:36 PM ^
I meant we will move up in the top 10, but MSU will not drop way into teens. I am with you. It would suck. But given what I see in their polls, they don't seem to make much sense.
October 11th, 2015 at 12:45 PM ^
it's part of the polling advantage they will enjoy for a while, based on the early rankings. They should drop farther based on last night's game, but they won't.

Edit to remove double post and to comment further, it certainly helps our resume for MSU to be overrated when we beat them

I wonder if anyone will ever revive Pollspeak - that site allowed you to download spreadsheets by team ahowing you how the AP (it might have had some of the Coaches polls too) voters ranked everyone individually, and it was fascinating to see certain individuals spend weeks either overrating or underrating various teams before they would concede to reality (i.e., you got a sense of blatant homerism in several writers).

The more overranked MSU is, the better our win will look next week.

Heck, if Harbaugh gets to vote on his own team, he probably has us unranked too. Stay under the radar and quietly dominate.

14 seems low, but how in the world Texas got any votes just goes to show how stupid this poll is
October 11th, 2015 at 12:33 PM ^
I would be irate as a Utah fan. They have 2 more tough games the rest of the year and are in a very good position to be undefeated going into the Pac-12 Championship game. Stupid coaches.

Pat Forde says Utah should be #1 and says Michigan is a runaway "Harboulder". Also says a loss Saturday would be "devastating" for little brother.

Nope, Michigan ain't good, nothing to see here. La de da.

I like being the underdog. Makes the pending curbstomping that much sweeter.

about being ranked 14 in the coaches (or any other) poll. According to cfbstats.com, while it's true we are the #2 team in total defense, we are #78 in total offense. Unless we are intentionally holding back the O because it hasn't really been needed, this disparity will eventually come up and bite us.

It's just monument to how dumb preseason pols are. It gets set in the preseason and then (barring huge wins and losses), you just slide up and down 1-2 spots each week depending on who wins and loses around you
October 11th, 2015 at 1:36 PM ^
Beating State will have quite an impact on rankings, but more importantly, would validate a monumental positive change and rebirth of the program.
It will be a big test, Cook is the first veteran QB we will have faced since Travis Wilson. Won't be quite as quick to rattle as the past QBs over the past four weeks have.
I think we are playing at a high level and Harbaugh will have a great game plan. Cannot wait.
October 11th, 2015 at 1:38 PM ^
Am I the only one shocked that TCU continues to be ranked so highly when it's had three nailbiter victories and routinely gives up 50 points per game? That team doesn't even seem like it belongs in the top 10.
October 11th, 2015 at 1:44 PM ^
They have a stud QB and a couple big time receivers, but I don't think they will survive Baylor or Oklahoma.
October 11th, 2015 at 1:42 PM ^
It's a bad poll, especially at the top, but this really isn't bad for us. It's feels unusual (to me) that there are no ranked 2-loss teams this late in the season. A lot of good records up there right now, and that will change. There are only three teams with a loss ahead of us, and that's not too bad. We'll probably pass a couple of them this week if we win.
But yeah. College football is the only sport with this problem that last year matters. Last year's results should of course have no bearing on this year's, but there is no other way to make sense of these rankings. But maybe they don't really matter any more at all!
October 11th, 2015 at 1:52 PM ^
We should be #10 IMO

14 is too low. The Polls are a biased joke of opinions of unqualifed people.
October 11th, 2015 at 2:26 PM ^
I am excited to watch our DT's rip MSU's interior linemen to shreds. Even if they get their Center back before the game I have a hard time believing that A)He will be fully healthy and B)He will not be rusty. With the way Hurst, Henry, and Glasgow are playing that will spell doom for Connor Cook because you can't throw from your back. Also, the DT's ability to get penetration in the run game will enable us to make Sparty run to the outside where we can gang tackle the backs.
October 11th, 2015 at 2:29 PM ^
Then it will be impossible for the coaches to vote us as less than a top 10 team without appearing incredibly petty.
October 11th, 2015 at 2:33 PM ^
Uhhh, who gave Sparty a first place vote??!!!
