You and your son should not let a mistake from Undergrad admissions sour your taste for Michigan and Michigan Engineering. After all, the Engineering School and its faculty were not involved in the oversight. Yes, there are other very good Engineering Schools , but Michigan has a top 10 program with a very progressive Dean in Dr. Alec Gallimore.
Wait for the decision process to be finished and make your decision. I wish your son well !
Michigan has accepted 50% or more of its incoming freshman class from out of state for the last few years. Last year a record 65,684 applications were received with 15,468 admissions granted with 6,685 new freshman enrolled. The average unweighted GPA was similar to the last few years, 3.88 ACT test scores were mid 50th % range, 31-34 As mentioned, this year looks to be another record app year. However, because of Michigan's large freshman class and the fact many applicants apply and decide to go to other very selective academic colleges, I maintain that the acceptance rate of 24% is very high compared to other highly ranked academic universities.like the Ivys which typically accept less than 10% of applicants for their much smaller freshman classes..And the Michigan applicants by and large are very similar to the Ivy League school applicants.
I read this entire thread because I am an Alumni Student Recruiter for Michigan. I live in Los Angeles, have an econ. LSA degree and Have an MBA ( not from Michigan ). Michigan Ross is a great school and I meet many alumni and faculty who attended or teach at Ross. I personally prefer the engineering school or liberal arts BA degree combined with the MBA for maximum experience and earnings power.Any degree, however, is great from Ross.I I do believe that there still may be remanats of the old boys fraternity for certain Wall Street jobs for thoses coming right out of school. If you want a security analyst job or investment banking job right after graduation, I would tend to recommend three Ivy League schools - Harvard, Penn and Columbia over Michigan.for a slightly better edge....all other things being the same such as GPA , references,leadership, etc. Just my two cents worth.

I may be disappointed in this year's team record but I still believe it is possible for a turnaround and a trip to the NCAA tournament. The team is not as bad as some people see them. Our core 8 players are not top 20 material but it is good enough to make the tournament or at worst the NIT.
getting a coach who is a grade A recruiter and decent coach route ... his name was Tommy Amaker.
We were also within a whisker of getting Rick Pitino before his wife talked him out of it at the last moment. Pitino probably would have turned the program around with wins but would he or his coaches used the alleged practices he has been accused of at Louisville? This would damage Michigan's reputation. We need a coach K or John Wooden type of guy....but how many of those coaches exist in college basketball?
Let's ask Calvin Johnson to be our WR coach and move Jeff Hecklinski to QB coach. Jeff threw for over 5,980 yards as a QB at Western Illinois and has held the position of QB coach in the past with Arizona and Central Missouri State. Calvin needs no introduction as a wide receiver and probably would be a greater recruiter with his magnetic personality. Recently married and no longer dancing with the stars, he may be open to a coaching career ! We all know Jim is going to continue to coach his Qbs as well.

I do not agree that we should bring them in if they meet the minimum NCAA standards but obviously they do not have to meet the Ungraduate admission standards for non scholarship athletes.

I am an alumni student recruiter for Michigan based in the Los Angeles area and when I first started doing this, I thought weather would be a major consideration. But it is not....sure I get some questions on it ,but it is certainly not a make or break. You stress the culture of Michigan and all the school has to offer. I thought the out of state tuition would be a major consideration also - not a consideration, of course for a scholarship student athlete - $ 45,410 for Tuition and Fees versus $ 15,000 for UCLA but that has not been a major obstacle either. Bring them to Campus and you will be surprised how Michigan compares favorably to UCLA , even though UCLA is a very strong school. California is only behind New York and Illinois when it comes to our out-of-state undergrads.

I got my tickets yesterday at Ticketmaster. The main UCLA ticket box office won't sell individual tickets until November and the alumni club tickets in sec 201 and 226 were sold out very quickly, priced at $ 69 and $ 49. I got tickets in section 101 above the Michigan bench.

My tennis buddies were graduates or had rooting interests for UCLA, USC, Fresno State and yes the Buckeyes. My neighbor across the street had a Spartan flag out for a couple weeks but that came down quickly yesterday.

Know because I was on a Michigan Alumni LA tour to SpaceX last year...... is mostly engineering but some math and physics degrees.
Far and away at SpaceX, the school most represented is Michigan ( as told to us by various Michigan graduate facility tour guides.)
