I am going through some academic issues right now. I’m working through it now. I will still continue my career at the University of Michigan ! #GoBlue

Is it calendar one year or two semesters?

If it's semesters, I wonder if the summer would count. If not, that would still basically mean he's out spring semester and fall, back on the team for the bowl (but no shot he'd ever play).

Obviously this is all dependent on him getting his shit together and (more importantly) Harbaugh allowing him to rejoin the team.

If he goes to JUCO for a year, I think he could play again in 2020 (not necessarily at Michigan).

Regardless...he's not on scholarship for a year. Meaning at minimum a 1-year grad transfer spot opened up.

JUCO should not be an option for a senior. He would not be eligible to play at one, nor would credits transfer from a two year school.

Obviously we don't know what's going on, but one path to returning would be to sit out football for a year while taking classes at Michigan or somewhere nearer home. He's not a desirable transfer candidate. Not if he has to sit out next season, then is free to leave as a grad transfer.

without getting into the nitty gritty, if this is just an eligibility issue, doesn't he just have to get eligible, meaning it could happen as soon as the end of winter semester?

if this is University-initiated rather than NCAA, does that mean he just has a higher bar to clear, or is there more to it than all of that?

The Michigan Daily referred to "academic misconduct". That' could mean several different things, but doesn't sound like an issue that can be fixed by raising his GPA or passing a class. Everett Golston came back after missing a season for academic misconduct, but he was suspended by Notre Dame, not kicked off the team.

The combined mentions of "academic issues" and "FERPA related" leads me to believe that this is not a situation that will lead to criminal charges. I really like Evans and would never expect something like that from him.

I won't speculate as to what the actual issue is, but is it safe to assume that we won't see a mugshot anytime soon?

If there are situations which run into university policies (academic honesty, etc.), he may not have a choice. That stuff isn't played around with, especially if it's something particularly egregious. If he's suspended and talking a year, seems to me this is something way beyond what the Athletic Department can, or would touch.

It sounds like it’s a purely academic issue, if the school allows him to remain or work to get eligible again academically it would seem pretty harsh and strange to not have the opportunity to get back on the football team.

Umbig is pretty connected and he’s been wrong before but if the academic side is giving Chris a second chance I think it would be a mistake for the football program not to. Sends a pretty weird message when criminal charges can result in just a couple of game suspension but academic misconduct immediately ends your career.

Again, university policies can, and will sideline a student athlete for periods of time like that, or even permanently. Hard to be eligible if you're removed from a class under a university policy for something like academic integrity, or suspended or even expelled altogether. They don't care about sports, nor should they in a situation like that, should this be one of them.

Once something goes up the chain in the university system for academic issues, there are ordinarily set protocols and punishments in place that Athletics can't touch, no matter how nice a kid he is, and which have nothing to do with how a player might be punished for other issues (criminal stuff, "team rules," etc.)

Is there a tab on this site where we can get directions on how to embed media as OP did? I know I've seen it posted in a few comments but I don't know if there is a standardized set of directions available to all. Neg me if you must, but I've tried a few times to do it on my own and my previews are always messed up.

i will be that he will bet back... he was expelled, and rightfully so...  now he actually has to play school, to get back on the team.

Good for him, but grades have to be really really bad to be kicked off a team entirely.

I was a college athlete and the only guys that got kicked off teams had GPAs between 0.1 - 0.9's (usually a freshman or a transfer)

Chris only has to maintain a 2.0 to be elligible at this point, and if it was just under that mark, he would just be inelligible for competition - not kicked off the team.

I can guarantee he has a really  low GPA. Probably was around 2.0 before the fall, then had a horrid first semester GPA this year dropped it really low.

This happened to a teammate of mine who had a 3.4 or so, then got a .4 one semester and it dropped to a 1.8 I think. He became inelligible, retook those classes, then got it back up to a good GPA. But he was already working with a solid GPA, so he just became inelligible and wasn't booted from the team

I don't think he returns to Michigan. All the other dudes that ended up getting overall GPAs that we're so low just never made it back to collegiate athletics. One was a generational talent that is currently training at a club and will make a strong push for 2020 Olympics, but he just will not be accepted as a D1 athlete anymore
