Brandon Peters and earning a 5th star

Submitted by BossHawgzGoinHam on

This is my 1st post but i just read this and i didn't see it posted anywhere else.  247 is talking about Brandon Peters getting his 5th star saying they believe he is a top 3 QB he just has to prove it on the field this week.  Best of luck to Brandon it would be nice to see our QB get that 5th star!

Cool, but stars don't mean much when you have coaches like we do. Harbaugh and his staff can make anyone better.

I would also point out the Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl.

OU's recruiting has taken a dip from top 10-15 to top 20ish the past few years under Stoops and the Orange Bowl really showed the lack of talent depth on their squad.

Stanford has been recruiting at a top 15 clip since Harbaugh left and now has a top 10 class coming in if Shaw doesn't leave for the NFL. That CLEARLY showed against Iowa.

Of course coaching is also a huge factor in college considering Boise St, pre-Big12 TCU and pre-Pac12 Utah have beaten the big dogs in the past with recruiting classes in the bottom 40s and 50s...

So his point is still somewhat valid.

Everytime I watch Stanford play I can't help but smile and hope that that's what Michigan football will be in a couple of years with more defensive depth of course.

(except less risk averse; Shaw is notoriously conservative and drives me up a wall sometimes)

U think what you are saying is mostly true, but the OU vs Clemson comparison in the Orange Bowl is off.

Recruiting Class National Rank
2015: OU 15th, Clemson 8th
2014: OU 14th, Clemson 17th
2013: OU 16th, Clemson 15th
2012: OU 12th, Clemson 15th
2011: OU 13th, Clemson 10th

OU doesn't seem to have any significant recruiting disadvantage to Clemson.

The thing we have to remember also is that recruiting class rank is often impacted by the size of the class. I didn't compare the above statistics, but it's possible that OU had some larger classes with somewhat lower rated players whereas Clemson may have had smaller classes but with stronger individual players. Although it's important to have some degree of depth, once you have an OK depth, my bet is that it's far more important that your raw material is stronger than it is to have "great depth" vs "OK depth".

MSU has coaching, but Bama has coaching and talent. Normally OSU does too but decided to screw up the MSU game.

MSU's weakness is out there. Dantonio is a great coach (sigh) but has a talent problems and they get exposed against elite teams.

The OP was not saying "Hey, now that Peters has a 5th star(potentially) he'll be a really good QB!" He was saying, "Nice for Peters to get a 5th star !".

And yes, Harbaugh and his staff make people better, but we probably don't need to get into the whole "do stars matter?" debate. It's been pretty well covered before.

to have a recruiting class full of 4 and 5 star players over one that is 50% 3-stars. However, can''t see what difference it makes whether a kid is a 4 or 5 star recruit. Peters feet will smell the same and his career at Michigan will be the same regardless of the number of stars he gets. If anything, a kid knowing he is a 5-star may result in him putting more pressure on himself to live up to it. Of course, it could also boost his self-confidence, too.

While it could change under Harbaugh, 5-star signees like Kevin Grady, Will Campbell, Devin Gardner, Dymonte Green, Shane Morris and Kyle Kalis didn't/haven't exactly set the world on fire. Geez, 3-star recruit Jake Rudock just finished a season in which he had the highest completion percentage and second highest passing yardage in 100+ years of Michigan football.

Your argument points directly at the previous coaching staff. Hoke and co. was a disaster when it came to talent development, and that list of five-stars confirms it. There is zero doubt Harbaugh can take players of any level and round them into form. That being said, you want to recruit the most talented players that will help your program. A team full of five-stars has a much better shot at success than a team full of three stars as long as the coaching allows the talent to blossom.

The team with better recruiting over the last few years won every game yesterday. Yes, it's true that Peters's game doesn't change, but the perception of him when he's talking to other players, etc does if he goes from 4 to 5 star QB. Michigan hasn't had coaches developing talent for nearly a decade now. It's not an accident that we had players who'd not play well in college and go on to have decent NFL careers.

I think it's more impressive how far Brandon has came.  That's why i thought it was cool he was even being considered for a 5th star bcuz he was ranked WAY lower then his standing right now earlier this season.  I know we have a great coaching staff but the fact that he himself has moved that far up the rankings is nothing to scoff at.  I could see if he was a borderline 5 star the whole way but he was not and the kid seriously turned it up this year with his play on the field and in camps.

Stars do matter maybe not so much on the field all the time but in recruiting rankings and recruits eyes they do matter.  Your going to attract a lot more high calibur players with a 5 star QB then with a 2 or 3 star QB.  The best players normally want to play with other great players.  I know our coaching staff does a great job at  getting the most out of our kids but coaches can only do so much.  You can polish a turd but it's still a turd nomatter how hard you try.  Jake Eason is a 5 star and so is Isaac Nauta and they both want to play together and have been considered a package deal to Georgia and probably still are.  I would also say that's probably one of the biggest reasons these kids go to so many camps aswell bcuz without those stars and camps they could get lost in the system.

Of course the "stars" have no inherent importance, but getting a 4th or 5th star is an indication of (perceived) improvement, and I much prefer a player that's continuing to improve over one whose rating is slowly falling because of under-performance given their amazing build and meaaureables.

most of the stars are from the camps they attend. if you attend camps they grade you. i read once that a kid was number one in his state. he said why should i go to a camp i know i will get a scholarship. they rated him 3 stars. so stars are fine but on the field is better. lots of three starts became big time players at college.

All actually studies looking at this say yes, stars on aggregate so matter. Especially if you want to win championships consistently. But coaching is still the number 1 factor for high success. Something UM has lacked for about a decade.

I know the guy is a jackhammer, but he is human and might need a minute with his family. Even if he can be in the stands, I hope he spends this dead period with his fam

I remember when Nick Saban was bitching about Satellite Camps, he said it was unfair because the coaches aren't allowed at these all-star games but Harbaugh can go around hosting these camps. Something along those lines. So I don't think they're allowed to attend.

The kid has got talent, he can make all the throws at the high school level. I hope he isn't one of our 'statue' kind of QB's when he gets here but he looks like he'll be whipping it around with the best of them when he gets his turn.

Stars may not be important to us but if I was a player I would want my skills to be recognized and would compete to be the best and be atop the ranks. So it is great to see Peters try to get that 5th star. Good luck to him!

IMO 5 stars come to the school ready to start and not have to redshirt as freshman due to size and athletic ability. If a team is lucky they play well as freshman and get better as their college career goes along like Lamar Woodley, Charles Woodson. Or they are ready to play as freshman and just don't seem to have the college careers as another 5 star (Green). A lot of 3 and 4 star players who redshirt to put on the muscle look just as good at the end of their college careers as any 5 star which makes it is hard to discern which player was a five star and which was a three star.

Tedbossman

But to reiterate, whether Peters gets a fifth star or not is not going to change the player he is. He isn't going to wake up the morning after he gets another star an inch taller and with a stronger arm. It's utterly meaningless whether they decide to give him a fifth star.
