10 freshmen played last night

Love this. Lota of future stars.

Tons of underrated guys in this class
September 1st, 2019 at 9:48 PM ^
10 freshman seeing the field isn’t a good thing, it’s a depth issue. Sure it will be good 2 years from now but for this year, it is not good.
September 1st, 2019 at 10:10 PM ^
Dude, it was a blowout and they get 4 games to hold onto their redshirt. Why should they not play?
September 1st, 2019 at 11:02 PM ^
I love this. On one thread we have people saying the sky is falling and that the offense is just the same as ever and Gattis is no different than Hamilton with the defense taking a clear step back. On this thread we have people defending a (perceived) lack of depth due to so many freshman seeing time in game 1 and casting their eyes to a bright future.
This isn't a critique of judgement but simply an observation of how (hilariously) vast the field of vision is in fandom. Anybody who says sports has no value in society is willfully ignoring the truths it reveals off the field.
Go Blue.

The list makes sense. But, given the injuries and problems at DT, I'm very surprised Mazi didn't make it into the game. Is he that far behind in his learning curve?
September 2nd, 2019 at 10:07 AM ^
There were multiple freshman playing well before the game was out of reach. When the opposing team is within 10 points they aren’t putting people in to save their starters. A former FB is starting at DT and a walk on safety is starting at ILB, and there are no depth issues.....ok
September 2nd, 2019 at 10:22 AM ^
First if all, we had 2 of our top 4 defensive tackles miss the game with an injury. Go to any program in the country and take away two players from a position group and they get thin.
Second of all, Glasgow has been contributing on this team for a few years now. His brothers were both walk-ons here. His brothers are both in the NFL. Quit pretending like being a walk-on is at all indicative of someone’s playing ability. Baker Fuckin’ Mayfield walked on TWICE.
What you define as “depth issues,” is something that occurs at EVERY program. You have 85 scholarships to fill a roster spread out over 5 years. You get a few injuries (we had what, 4 or 5 members of our two deep miss the game?) and you’re left with zero choice but playing freshmen or walk-ons, and guess what? None of them looked overwhelmed. Nobody looked lost. Hell, one of those freshmen almost cracked 100 rushing yards and had 11 ypc.
This is either a terrible troll job on your part, or just absolutely shit take.
September 2nd, 2019 at 10:37 AM ^
Glasgow beat out a former starter in Gil, who we thought was going to start this year and be decent. They're backed up by higher ranked younger players. That sounds like good or even great depth. Being blinded by the fact that Glasgow started as a walkon isn't wise. Maybe look at how he played instead. He looked very good to me. I bet the UFR will agree.
September 1st, 2019 at 10:50 PM ^
You sure about that?
We had 22 guys in our 26-man class in 2016 play.
16 of 30 in 2017.
12 of 19 in 2018.
The days of redshirting a majority of your class are gone. We don't even list redshirt on the roster anymore. Guys aren't getting 5 scholarship years unless they're good enough.
September 1st, 2019 at 11:45 PM ^
Fyi... The redshirt thing on mgoblue has come and gone over the years. A couple seasons during the Lloyd Carr era they took it away.
September 1st, 2019 at 11:56 PM ^
In EL the six year body is part of their M.O., playing grown men vs our kids. I'd rather see us play mature players like Bo did.
September 2nd, 2019 at 9:32 AM ^
Part of Dantonio's myth is that he redshirts everybody. He redshirts a far lower percentage of 4* freshmen than Hoke/Harbaugh. He just can't recruit that many players ready to go as freshmen.
Bo's era is long gone. Trying to do everything his way doesn't work anymore. You can't recruit at a high level unless you let freshmen earn playing time.
September 2nd, 2019 at 11:10 AM ^
Football schools could offer as many scholarships as they could afford and many had 150 players or more. 1973 brought about the first limitations on football scholarships. That’s why Bo and other coaches could redshirt most of a class. Scholarships have been reduced more since then.
September 2nd, 2019 at 7:03 AM ^
And with the transfer portal out there as a coach you have to try to keep players happy which means getting them into games
September 2nd, 2019 at 11:57 AM ^
Are those the numbers who played at any point of the year or those who played week 1? (Curious and I honestly don’t recall)
September 1st, 2019 at 11:35 PM ^
frosh need to play early these days, especially on top teams. are you expecting 2nd and 3rd stringers and role players to be mostly veterans? thats not reality.
if theyre playing a handful of frosh during conference play, thats 100% expected and reasonable. the other 5-7 will play ST, minor roles and garbage time. a chunk of each recruiting class will be misses for a variety of reasons (poor evals, personal issues, injures, etc) so they need 1st and 2nd year players to earn roles and contribute.
were not talking about 15-20 frosh playing which would be an issue. and playing 4 games is much different than playing most or all games. if they dont have 5-10 talented frosh each year forcing their way onto the field and into certain roles, theyre not recruiting the right players
September 2nd, 2019 at 8:24 AM ^
Is Alabama the deepest team in the country? They have to be close. How about Clemson?
Bama played 13 true freshmen vs Duke and 5 of them started. Clemson played 24(!) true freshmen vs GT.
Welcome to college football in 2019. Someone hasn't been paying attention. I won't be surprised if your next post is how Harbaugh is falling behind by holding back his freshmen.
September 2nd, 2019 at 2:36 PM ^
Only Charbonnet was a real part of the game plan. We already knew he, Sainristil, and Hill were going to play going in. Although Sainristil barely played and I didn't notice Hill until garbage time. Jackson was kick return only. Johnson played at the end of the 1st half when Black got hurt and Collins was being disciplined for his alligator arms attempt over the middle. I saw Turner on the kick return team. All and Hinton both played during garbage time (and possibly Hill). I didn't notice Solomon, Barnhart, or Thomas.
Right now we have 1 starter in Charbonnet. Only Sainristil and Johnson seemed to be depth (possibly Hill too, but I didn't see him until garbage time). The rest were either special teams or garbage time. Things will change over the course of the year, but claiming all the freshman that played are only on the field for depth is not correct.
September 1st, 2019 at 11:26 PM ^
Yes, lots future stars. But I still want some more HUGE, 300+, guys in the middle of the D line.
September 1st, 2019 at 11:52 PM ^
Hey Bench! KEEP EATING!!
September 2nd, 2019 at 7:07 AM ^
Amen. Those guys we had in the middle against MTSU will get steamrolled by Wisconsin.
September 1st, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
Don’t see any of these guys being on a “Milton Redshirt Watch” this season.
September 1st, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
Barnhart
September 1st, 2019 at 9:27 PM ^
I thought I saw Q Johnson in at safety on that late TD drive.
I presume Barnhart plays max 4 games but the rest on that list are not redshirting. Giles, Turner and Soloman on special teams all year
i hope Mazi plays as our DL depth (due to injuries) is very concerning.
September 2nd, 2019 at 9:22 AM ^
#23 was Barrett on the late TD. Replay showed a good shot of the name on his jersey.
Agree with your redshirt list. Erick All is the one who played who could go either way.
September 1st, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
No surprise. Harbaugh said to expect 12 to play this year and this was one of the few games where a win was all but guaranteed.
From that list, Barnhart, Solomon, and maybe All are the only guys I think are likely to redshirt. Maybe DJ Turner.
Wish we could have gotten more freshmen time.

September 1st, 2019 at 9:50 PM ^
1. Charbonnet looked great.
2. Johnson looked good.
3. We need Hinton and Smith to provide depth until Jeter & Dwumfour are healthy.
4. Why and when did Barnhart play?
September 2nd, 2019 at 12:34 AM ^
Pure speculation but is he the best Frosh tackle right now? From a depth perspective.....
September 2nd, 2019 at 9:27 AM ^
Barnhart only played in garbage time. Maybe because he's #2 right now on the depth chart with Runyan out? It would take another injury before he's in danger of burning his redshirt.
September 2nd, 2019 at 9:42 AM ^
I thought the preseason buzz was Carpenter was the top tackle right now likely to play in the freshman class.
September 2nd, 2019 at 9:47 AM ^
Carpenter is practicing at center. He could play guard, but he's definitely not a tackle.
September 2nd, 2019 at 10:35 AM ^
Carpenter is a center or a guard. Not a tackle. He’s got the buzz as best OL, but certainly not a tackle,
September 2nd, 2019 at 10:39 AM ^
Trent Jones was getting the buzz at Tackle in camp and Trevor Keegan was higher ranked.
Barnhart gets the nod though. Interesting.
September 3rd, 2019 at 9:29 AM ^
Barnhart is the only one of the 3 I've seen mentioned lately. For example here, although not in the top 10. https://247sports.com/college/michigan/Article/Michigan-footballs-top-10-freshmen-from-the-2019-recruiting-class-following-fall-camp-134761761/
September 1st, 2019 at 10:17 PM ^
Quite a few first timers out there too... Vincent Gray, Ryan Hayes, Jalen Mayfield, etc...
September 1st, 2019 at 10:58 PM ^
Not a good sign, we were only ahead by 13 late (not sure of the time). This was not a typical blowout.
September 1st, 2019 at 11:19 PM ^
They were winning by at least 19 for the entire 4th quarter, and experimentation was in place well before that...
September 2nd, 2019 at 1:58 AM ^
It was 40-14 and MTSU had < 300 yards until their last-minute garbage time TD.
September 1st, 2019 at 11:24 PM ^
Definitely the most young raw talent ive seen on the field for us. Itll be fun to watch things start to click for all of them
Need to feed Charbonnet. He is a 100 yard rusher.
Giles is going to run one back
Cornelius Johnson didn't look like a freshman at all. Made that great one handed grab
Sainristil will show off his skills next game once they actually get him the ball in space so he can use his......Speed In Space like we were told about all offseason
September 2nd, 2019 at 10:47 AM ^
Sainristil was a disappointment. Didn’t even get a touch, and we barely tried to use him the way he should be used.
Yeah, first game, blahblahblah. But this was the guy coaches were raving about all through spring and fall practice, assuring us that he had “won” the starting job at “slot” receiver. Then when push came to shove. Harbaugh did what he always does, and started the guy with more seniority, talent notwithstanding.
September 1st, 2019 at 11:24 PM ^
Didn't Giles Jackson start too? Or special teams doesn't count?
I liked what I saw from Giles Jackson last night.
September 2nd, 2019 at 12:28 AM ^
Given the new redshirt rules, real question is whether they play in more than 4 games.
September 2nd, 2019 at 1:59 AM ^
UPDATE: make that 11. Charles Thomas also got into the game. Skipped over the name in the box score because I thought Thomas was Ambry since it was listed as one of the first names in the participation report.
September 2nd, 2019 at 2:54 AM ^
Looked to me like Dax was in on kick and punt coverage. Then on that last 3 play TD drive but he didn't do anything to cause that. Seemed to get downfield pretty well and downed at least one punt. I'm not sure MTSU attempted to return any kickoffs.
September 2nd, 2019 at 9:27 AM ^
Certain positions - eg, OL and QB - are more likely to see redshirts and little preseason playing time. If you're playing those guys for significant reps there may be a depth problem.
September 2nd, 2019 at 9:39 AM ^
Kinda surprised we didn't see Mazi Smith, especially with Jeter out and Dwumfor getting reinjured early. I wonder if Mazi is banged up too. But, hopefully we can retain all these young fellas. I'm a little concerned with depth with all the attrition. At some point in order to have the depth to deal with injuries and not have to use freshman on the 2 deep who aren't elite (top 100-ish) kids we will need to do a better job with retention.
September 2nd, 2019 at 3:37 PM ^
Most impressive obviously was Charbonnet, who looked very good in his first college game, and I expect he will make an impact right away for this team.
Most encouraging I would say was Cornelius Johnson. He looked pretty comfortable out there and his two catches were not gimmes. If he continues to develop, we should be okay on the outside with him and Bell (who didn't have his best game, but I think he'll be pretty good) after the NFL trio head to the league.
September 3rd, 2019 at 9:17 AM ^
Of those listed, I hope Barnhart, Jackson, and Solomon can maintain their redshirts. Maybe Johnson too.
