Calling Out the Defenders of Rodriguez

Submitted by The Barking Sp… on
It’s a new day, and time for a new “Blog.” Well, I saw so much anger and frustration come out with Barking Sphincter Blog I that I decided to stay on topic and continue in my vein of axing just why the hell so many people think Rodriguez should be given so many free passes. But I’m not going to concentrate on Rodriguez here—I’m going to call out the Defenders of the Rod with this one. The angst UM fans are feeling is polluting the intranets. The Defenders of the Rod (TDoR) come out enforce to rail at anyone who questions not just Rodriguez, but the state of UM football and recruiting. A guy on a premium pay site axes something like, “Hey, who we gonna go after on defense? A lot of highly-ranked defensive recruits are off the board.” WHAMMO. Within minutes this post is swarmed upon as if it was dollar-days at a downriver Wal Mart and Cheeze Whiz was on special. The guy is called a “Chicken Little” a “Debbie Downer” a “Closet Sparty” or is barraged with sarcastic bullshit like, “Hey you’re right. Maybe Michigan should just give up football.” All that ridiculousness aside, the worst part is when the TDoR start justifying 3-9 and why it happened. I guess the worst record in the history of the program will do that to an emotionally fragile fan base whose identity is based in no small part on the successes and failures of the Wolverines. But it does beg the question: How does a legitimate query about THIS year’s recruiting turn into a self-pitying justification party about the PREVIOUS season? If the TDoR want to put 3-9 behind them, or tell others to do so, why are they always the first ones to bring it up? Take a look at my first blog. I had the vultures all over that post screaming like little girls at a Jonas Brothers concert, and about all they could spit out was “3-9! 3-9! Cupboard bare! Lloyd Bad Man leave no players!” Well, if 3-9 hurts recruiting so badly, how’s come Rich Rod landed some pretty good talent as the season wore on, and did so even after it ended? The dude blew a 40-year streak of non-losing seasons, crashed and burned a 33-year bowl streak, and really good players still signed on. But THIS year, it’s different. Even after bringing a big time defensive coordinator on board in Greg Robinson. THIS year, 3-9 matters. Gone are the cries of “Yowza! 3-9 and we can still have a top 10 class? We are the ballz!” Gone are the cries of “THIS is gonna be the big year of turnaround! 2009—smokin, baby!” Those rallying shouts have been replaced by “I’m thinking that by 2011 we should be really good.” Bravado moving forward has been replaced by backpedalling and reminding everyone that our poor, young new coach was saddled by horrible players out to get him, Lloyd Carr lurking in the shadows with his non-support or super-secret coven of anti-Rodriguez co-conspirators, and a Michigan Media throwing its full support behind the bible-thumping Prophet of Lansing, Mark Dantonio. And with all that back pedaling comes the revealing of a very confidence-challenged fan base worried about Michigan falling off the map as so many other Big Timers have. The UM fan base, which never saw a precipitous fall as even remotely possible before 3-9, reels from it and vehemently pounces on anyone who dares question whether Rich Rodriguez can get things back in order. Gone is civil discourse. Gone is acceptance, and discussion with those of differing opinions. These so-called fans, who claim to support a great university known for tolerance and open-mindedness are in stark, dark contrast to the image of Michigan. Many claim to be graduates of the school; to that I say “Bullshit.” Neither their writing, their use of the English language, nor their ignorant closed-mindedness and lack of intelligent conversation speaks to being a graduate of such a great institution of higher learning. And this is no more proudly on display than when a recruit backs out on a commitment to UM or elects to go elsewhere if the fan base feels they were somehow “led on” by a recruit. Oh, that kid is in for some serious bashing. I remember the backlash against last year’s batch of decommits. Kevin Newsome, Shavodrick Beaver, and all the rest were creamed, called liars, their integrity was challenged, their families were insulted, and all because they simply changed their minds. Often, if not every time, the UM coaching staff had cooled on the kid and the decommit was more of a suggestion to him rather than the recruit just flipping. But no matter; these decommitments evoked a reaction that can not be described as anything but visceral. And all without ANY knowledge of the situation or the recruit in question. The really sad part was that type of reaction came from the majority, not the crazy marginalized sector, as is usually the case with this type of Mob Rule. So it stands to reason that we now see these angry protestations against those who are, very legitimately, wondering about the status of this once-proud program. I say again: Michigan State is winning a cultural war with UM in the state of Michigan. MSU has “perception” on its side in a big way. Acknowledge it and fight it, or lose 40 years of goodwill and dominance in your own back yard. But again, to accept the challenge offered by Mr. Michigan is Greener means a wave of Maize Ragers raining down on you with the kind of contempt usually reserved for baby seal clubbers or soccer moms. How long will this go on? Is it true that winning will cure everything? It remains to be seen if Rodriguez will build a winner—how much time does he have? and it remains to be seen—if he has time and does it—whether the “I told you so” crowd will welcome back their fellow UM supporters who, pretty much objectively, have done nothing more than voice warranted concerns. Have a great weekend people! GO BLUE!

There's so much to respond to here, but; I recall NO ONE saying "'09 baby!", or even implying that this was going to be "our year" or whatever. Seriously man, get a life, or some Paxil... something. EDIT: To clarify; most people do expect a big bounce from last year, but nobody's suggesting we're gonna be great. That's all.

We're going to win at least 6 games next year. Or you know what...maybe we'll beat tOSU and lose every single other game. I would actually be ok with that, haha.

How does a legitimate query about THIS year’s recruiting turn into a self-pitying justification party about the PREVIOUS season? well man, if you can't see the connection b/t 3-9 and tough recruiting year, then i don't know what to tell you. Well, if 3-9 hurts recruiting so badly, how’s come Rich Rod landed some pretty good talent as the season wore on, and did so even after it ended? The dude blew a 40-year streak of non-losing seasons, crashed and burned a 33-year bowl streak, and really good players still signed on. But THIS year, it’s different. you doesn't understand the +2 rule: bad on the field in season X leads to bad recruiting year X+2. ummm, how many guys we're verbals (RC09) before the season last year? how many went thru spring recruiting and summer camp and that entire summer making visits after the 9-4 bowl win vs UF season? this year (RC2010) these kids have sat thru the BULK (/coachBT) of their recruiting process in the midst of 3-9. a DC change practically mid season. fine, question it. no one is enthralled with the recruiting on the defensive side of the ball in 2010 (save CB). but people certainly understand it, even if they are disappointed.

BS, you actually make a ton of great points. Many are true. But they are mis-timed. Post this next year at this time after another losing season, and I'm right there with you, pitchfork in hand. But since I can't make 9-3/lose to OSU/lose bowl Michigan football come back with a wave of a wand, I choose to see the glass as half full, and hope I am right. That does not make me one of TDoR, it makes me sane.

Oh my God they found me. I don't know how, but they found me. Run for it, people! The angry Scout boards trolls have found our reasonable little corner of the Internet. Flee! Flee for your lives, and your sanity! Make sure someone grabs TomVH, Brian's collected works of David Foster Wallace, and enough canned goods to last us until the season begins. Rendezvous at flight tracker, where we shall download Haloscan and begin anew.

are obviously trying to stir up the MGoBlog community with your rant and to some degree it has worked. The truth is it was a bad football year. RR was the coach and is ultimately responsible. It was only his first year in this position and he was a winner before he came here. I choose to believe that last year was an abberation for both RR and Michigan football. I believe the football team will improve under RR. I believe that a large part of the problem in 2008 was the attirition by graduation, injury, and transfer and the fact that some of the remaining players did not fit the system. Recruiting has gone well for the past nearly two years. 2008 was one year; a poor one. The team and many of the fans will regroup and go on to better things.

So riddle me this Mr. College football expert, Did you play in college? Have you ever been a coach or do you coach now? Do you have any idea how much time and effort goes into recruiting and evaluating kids? If the answer is no, please just give it a rest. This season is going to be a lot of fun. You should try to just enjoy the ride.

I know guys like this in real life. They also think that the Patriots should have traded Tom Brady because Matt Cassel almost led them to the playoffs. They watch Fox News exclusively, not because they are conservative, but because it's so much easier to understand life without all the nuance and grey areas. Just curious, and not to shit on Lloyd's legacy because I respect the man like few others, but who did a worse coaching job: Carr in 2007 or Rodriguez in 2008? I'd go with Carr because he had a truckload of talent and the season was over in three hours.

Brian: Can you please keep this moron from posting these repetitive, nonsensical ramblings? He does a couple of bong hits, and suddenly these "interesting" revelations come floating into his brain.

I got nothing! I'm fine with this recruiting class. 3-9 sucks but this is still Michigan and these are Michigan kids. I trust RR I have to it happens and I've erased last season from my history. His name is The Barking Sphincter what did you expect?

Well, if I may weigh in on this subject I must say, potato salad motherfuckers! I like feeding trolls, especially in the off season when content is hard to come by yet my appetite for entertainment does not diminish. Many of you are aware of whom I proposed to be the next Michigan coach. However, I have vowed never to bring forth that name again. So I won't. All I can say is that he was not behind any of the aforementioned doors. And, RR hasn't accomplished anything yet. This is true. Yeah, he recruited a few dudes, and ran off some others. He brought in Barwis who has yet to deliver a Superman, and we had the worst record in history last year. The DC was unceremoniously replaced by the wizard from Syracuse. So, here we sit. We hold in our hands nothing but promise and potential. We strive to measure intangibles, but are frustrated in our endeavor by the fact that intangibles are very difficult to measure without some sort of intangameter thingy. We gaze upon stars--stars that magically change in quantity and are subject to scrutinization by anyone with internet access. We sniff the college football ether that descends from the clouds and forms mires across our great land. Yet, and still, none of us knows the sound of one hand clapping. So, heretofore ipso factor habeus corpus, we create realities that suit our desires. Dancing, remember, is nothing but a vertical expression of a horizonal desire. When we dance and blog we are but spilling our seed onto the earth, and we are not supposed to do that. Where am I going with all this, you might be wondering? Nowhere. And if you have read all these words that I have typed, you will never get back the time you spent reading them. But, you could have been reading Michael Jackson coverage, so this is better than that so you can thank me any time you want. In the end, RR has yet to prove himself, this is true. Even he would agree with that. Stating the obvious, while both noble and endearing, can become a bit trite. Spice it up a bit, ye old barking spincter. Try being clever for a change. Potato salad motherfucker.

Last summer you couldn't get enough of Rich Rod. Now, Michigan goes 3-9 and you are off the bandwagon and sprinting in the opposite direction. And you are making psychological judgments against people with more patience, using your usual tired wannabe rock radio shock jock routine. I keep waiting for a wacky sound effect and some bumper about "you are listening to THE TRUTH with John Staller, the only man who is MAN ENOUGH to stand up for it!!!" or something equally lame. But really, you couldn't take one year of losing before turning into some speaking truth to the masses, hand wringing, tl;dr factory of ad-hom insults and ridiculous assertions that can't ever be proven wrong (so they must be right!!). So, tell me, who exactly has their self-esteem wrapped up in Michigan football? The folks with the novel idea of just watching the games and not getting wrapped up in crusading for a new coach, or the dude who writes 10,000 words about how butt-hurt he is that mean ol' Bill Martin didn't hire the "right" coach?
