Tim Drevno To Be Michigan's Offensive Coordinator Comment Count

Here's some water-is-wet reporting: a couple of solid sources indicate that USC offensive line coach and running game coordinator Tim Drevno will be named Michigan's offensive coordinator in the near future.

This is also being reported by USC reporter Gerald Martinez; it is all over USC paysites; USC OL Zach Banner (remember him?) has tweeted out a farewell.

Drevno's history as an OL coach is unquestionably excellent, and he was Harbaugh's offensive coordinator at San Diego.

FWIW, Michigan was high on GA OL Chuma Edoga's list early in his recruitment; he's now a USC recruit.

Read on Rotoworld today that Roman was a candidate for the T.B. and Jax OC jobs. So either A) he told Jim "No thanks, I want to try and stay in the NFL." or B) jim wasn't happy with Greg's performance lately and decided to go in another direction.

He will help the OL a lot and being a run game coordinator that will help the run game. Harbaugh works with the QB's so I'm very happy with the hire. WHOS GOT IT BETTER THAN US?

I'm assuming by 'us' you mean the fans.  If so, the people that have it better then us are the players.  I'm guessing they are about to get a 180 degree turnaround in the quality of the coaching staff and development.

Love the hire, and I think he'll be a stud. Having said that, I'll be really curious and interested to see who we get for TEs and WRs. If we can add another baller, we could easily assemble one of the top 5 offensive coaching staffs in the country.

If you have good quarterbacking, you have a passing game.  If you have a great offensive line, you will have a great running game.  Our guys have to be thrilled, and with an O Line kicking tail our backs will shred the opposition.

I wonder if Isaac and Drevno ever crossed paths?

Prob not - Drevno was probably hired away from San Fran last Jan and Isaac was already on his way out.

Its possible that he coaches TE or has the old TE/OT designation despite never coaching OT at all. If he's going to be an actual OC and be in charge of the plan and call plays on Saturdays, I dont think he will coach OL. That's a lot of guys to coach during the week while devising the game plan. Its also a lot of guys to coach on game day, so it would behoove him to be on the sideline and watching all five of those guys: might hurt him as an OC. Tl;dr: If he coaches OL, Harbaugh is probably the real OC. If he is the real OC, he coaches TE.

I think he'll coach the OL as well. Seems to be a damn good OL coach, and if we've learned anything, damn good OL coaches are worth their weight in gold. I suspect the OC tag is just a label and Harbaugh will call plays. Which gives me some pause if I'm honest -- I prefer a CEO coach. But those Stanford/SF offenses have looked great, and the defenses haven't suffered. Let's keep that up.

Have to say I hadn't heard of him before looking into Harbaugh's coaching tree before today and Brian's Searchbits for Assistant Coaches. Has a great mix of college and NFL experience. Remember that NFL is the pinnacle for coaching any position group and will help with recruiting. Smart and decisive O Line play is needed so bad right now.

I see JH as almost a psuedo-QB Coach and I'm assuming they'll share play calling? Get a great RB and WR coach and I think we're ready to roll on ofense.

Drevno clearly is a superstar with OL play, but what does this mean for the overall offense?  Greg Roman was more diversified in his expertise and offensive play-calling.  I suspect this means no read-option play at all.

This is silly.

It would imply JH sat detached from the OC room for 3-4 years at SF and that Roman was some read option guru and Jim is clueless about any system other than manball. Or Roman told Jim what offense to run. Roman was a frigging HS coach 7 years ago.

Jim willl build the offense around power running and then adjust from there to whatever his QB abilities are.  If he wanted to install the triple option in an offseason he'd go down to GA tech and move in with their coach for a month to learn it from top to bottom.

This is not the Hoke era with a detached defensive line coach running things.

Cumong man.

Yes, but there is such a thing as influence and motivation. I.e., perhaps Roman was the guy pushing for zone-read and pistol-type stuff, and Harbaugh said "ok, let's take a look" vs. Harbaugh being the driver of looking at innovative offiensive schemes.  Far from clear as to which it is in this case.  Hence it's worth asking the question.

"I suspect this means no read-option play at all."

Where the hell does this idea come from that read option and man ball are mutually exclusive? The most man ball offenses I've ever seen run at any level (the veer and the triple option) are centered around read option.

We are Drevno!

...Now whip it
Into shape
Shape it up
Get straight
Go forward
Move ahead
Try to detect it
It's not too late
To whip it
Whip it good...
