1. Offense vs Maryland

starts at 1:00

There was some First Actual Game clunkiness but the boxscore looks fine! Was that actually the fastest touchdown in Michigan football history? JJ missing some deep shots isn't concerning, more concerning is him breaking the pocket to run around and then run around some more and then run around some more. There was also some poor decision making, he looked like a second year quarterback. So Blake Corum is pretty good. Incredible awareness and elusiveness. Was also able to grind out short yardage which was the only part of his game that was missing. Brian officially calls him the best running back he's ever seen at Michigan. Pass protection was pretty good. Schoonmaker's run blocking has been fantastic and offers NFL-level complexity to the run game. Tight end depth is good enough that they might not actually miss Erick All too much moving forward. Can't run a trick play based off of a play you didn't run.

2. Defense vs Maryland

starts at 36:50

Very little pass rush which is concerning. Tagovailoa had all day to pass. Interestingly when Maryland brought in their backup the pass rush started to work. A lof of things that Seth said wouldn't translate from Colorado State have not translated into this game. Some of the blitzes weren't weird enough. Linebackers were not shooting the gaps, Nikhai-Hill Green was greatly missed. The secondary looked great, though! Mike Sainristil has absolutely crushed all expectations this season. Shout out to RJ Moten for batting down the ball on his own to make the interception. Maryland will probably end up being one of the best offenses Michigan plays so in hindsight this was a pretty solid performance as a whole. There were some flagrantly missed holding calls.

3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory

starts at 1:05:24

Takes hotter than Adrian Martinez any time he plays Oklahoma. Talking about going for it on 4th down - do you call a timeout? Seeing Miami run plays that didn't work for Michigan last year was... interesting. Can't punt around mid-field if you're just running it down their throat, especially when Blake Corum is running for 8 yards per carry. Special teams should've kept kicking it to Tai Felton instead of through the endzone... just in case.

4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac

starts at 1:37:05

Forty five minutes of Minnesota vs Michigan State wooo! (Not actually, sorry). This domination is even worse than the final score. Michigan State has two division II transfers in their secondary. Kenneth Walker deserved two Heismans for what he did with this team last year. Minnesota is suddenly the favorite to win the West. Penn State played Central Michigan pretty even for most of the game which is fairly alarming for the Nittany Lions. Sean Clifford was 1-for-11 on "shots downfield". How does... Iowa score on Michigan? Their turnovers don't seem random. Iowa has had 40 drives start in their own territory, 15 of them have entered opposing teams' territory, and only six of those have resulted in points. 1-11 Northwestern whose only win is Nebraska and 1-11 Nebraska with zero power-five wins is on the table! Florida Atlantic outgains Purdue by 80 yards but Purdue wins, though they lose their starting QB. They fumbled the kneel down! Welp, Ohio State looked good, but Wisconsin didn't even look like they were trying. This was just every other Ohio State vs Wisconsin Big Ten Championship Game.

I also think it was "first Big Ten start" jitters. First start against a team with a pulse.

He has already shown the ability to make consistent, good decisions. He just needs to learn how to make them against similar-level competition, where the game speeds up and the pressure increases - that's the next step here. There's no reason to believe he can't do it, but it will take some growing pains to get there...we just hope those growing pains don't cost us a game.

One caveat on JJ's boxscore - he very nearly had 3 TOs that we were fortunate to recover, or the INT that went out of bounds by inches. The 2 fumbles both came on the missed FG drive, one of them saw JJ's shenanigans make the FG longer, the other one very well could've been 3 the other way. The INT came on the late FG drive. Those 3 plays don't really show up on the box score. I don't think the game was quite as close as the score but had any one of those plays gone different (or of course the opening kick) and the game would feel much dicier.

I think JJ will grow and improve the D overall looked good - the secondary did great. Don't want this to sound like doom and gloom. But it deserves context.

This feels like a bit of an excuse - he had a chance to RPO the run with Gash and just didn't make the call properly.  Yes, I'm sure he's encouraged not to take big hits but he's also running around in the pocket for 6 seconds multiple times instead of throwing the ball away or running.  That feels more like a guy who's internal clock is sped up and isn't making the right calls.  That's the thing people might be underestimating about his role last year - he was mostly called in to make simple reads or throws.  A lot of his plays were either designed runs or dirt-simple RPOs; they were almost opponent agnostic.  But now he's being tasked with reading a defense, make adjustments, etc.  It's much harder and he's learning, and one of the costs is he's making mistakes.  I don't blame him but combined with some of his tunnel vision throwing the ball (which accounted for the two near-picks) that's more of a decision issue than a "don't get hurt" one in my eyes.

Everyone watching on TV thought Michigan scored in 3 seconds because they showed what was allegedly the game clock as they went to commercial after the TD and it was 14:57. I ran it back just to be sure because I couldn't figure out how. And everyone else kept saying it took 7 seconds.

A good podcast overall - glad some people may be coming back around on the "this shit is hard" re: the QB position and not undermining what Cade did last year.

McCarthy was fine but some of his misses downfield were bad both because he overthrew a guy and also because he missed other open guys.  He'll get better at that with more reps but we might have taken for granted how easy those looked.

I agree about MSU looking into a talent abyss - I noted earlier this year that most of their top performers are holdovers from the Dantonio era and they're mostly aging out now; there's not a ton of young talent (especially on defense) and Tucker really hasn't been that stout on the recruiting path to offset for it, especially given the number of transfers out he's had.

CORRRECTIONS ADDED AS PER COMENTS BELOW. I BLAME ALCOHOL AND AGE.

Maryland brought out this game early previous seasons and beat Texas twice and WV with it, so we should be glad we did not suffer the same fate. Could be that Maryland just gets easier to scout throughout the season by not having an ability to reserve any aspects of the playbook early on and little ability to add wrinkles to it as the season progresses? Dunno.

That said, and I got chastized for this in the game thread for some odd reason by people calling it a "weird take" that I don't really think is weird at all. This team is paying a price for having 3 complete doormats to start off the season, as I don't think anyone, especially the coaches, learned very much in those games and had little useful film to work with in identifying weaknesses and having the opportunity to correct them. Partially because of level of competition, partially because the starters played less than a half of almost meaningless snaps for review. There are obviously deficiencies on the team that weren't evident previously and we don't have anything to go on yet in terms of if/how and to what extent they can be addressed or mitigated. Given that this is the prevailing opinion of the vast majority of people that have any depth of knowledge about actual football (I most wholeheartedly confess to not being one of them) after that game, I'm going to stick with "not weird."

Prior to this game many were prognosticating that we were sure, if not highly likely, to head into the OSU game undefeated, some pundit actually posited that Michigan was better than Georgia (this is prior to their not perfect game against Kent State), which I certainly think is still possible, but not quite the cakewalk that some had envisioned. I was laughingly accused of going complete BPONE by some after the first half when I indicated that what I just saw (barring halftime adjustments to the contrary) was causing me to recalibrate my expectation for the season, meaning that I thought an undefeated run to OSU was less a an 80-90% probability and more like a 50/50 one, which is far from calling the season a total loss and calling for heads to roll.

Since Iowa is literally the converse of Maryland in terms of playing football, I fully expect to see the team face an inverted set of challenges next week and probably learning new lessons and revealing or confirming the presence of weaknesses discovered against Maryland, the result being a closer than expected (prior to Saturday I was mentally set to see them just roll Iowa) M win. Although, who knows? Maryland is certainly not what everyone thought, maybe Iowa isn't either?

Here's hoping that the Maryland game results in enough teachable moments on film to make some headway in a week of practice and M shows up next week on a whole other level, completely possible.

As always though, Go Blue!

Do you mean West Virginia, last year's opener? Maryland beat Texas in 2017 and 2018 (time flies). And I think you meant Georgia's game against Kent St. (they haven't played Vandy yet). Interestingly, Georgia has alternated crushing wins over Oregon and South Carolina with pretty mediocre wins over FCS Samford (33-0) and Kent St. (39-22)...

Lol....this is why I shouldn't try to write these missives from memory given that I drink strong Bloody Marys with my watch group in the a.m. here in San Francisco and then just sporadically flip around games the rest of the afternoon as we transition to beer and it all becomes one big blur, apparently inclusive of previous seasons.

Yes, meant Texas the previous years, though I guess the same dynamic would have been in play last year with WV, though that is less surprising than the wins against the Longhorns.

Yes also to Georgia v. Kent State and not Vandy, not sure how I got that confused given that I watched a good part of their game with Purdue 🤦

I'm sure he can get the redshirt, though I don't think he would even need it for next year since this is only his fourth year with the program and my understanding is the 2020 COVID year doesn't count, i.e. this is only his third year for eligibility purposes. The bigger issue is would he even stick around, since I've heard at least a few comments talking about him going pro, especially now that he has a kid...

I was getting a little annoyed at the “prevent defense” at times in the second half. I know the whole point was to not let Jarrett et al take the top off of the defense (which proved successful), but it seemed like it was allowing clear RPS losses for no reason.

Example: Maryland 3rd and 4 in the 3rd quarter around the Maryland 35 or something. Sainristil is covering Jarrett in the slot and gives a 7 yard cushion. There’s only one covering safety behind Sainristil and then Turner above him, but it’s a moot point because Jarrett runs a quick curl at 5 yards and gets the first down. Any QB could see that 5 free yards on 3rd and 4 is your pre-snap read.

Was this Sainristil’s fault? If not, why play so soft? Seems like you should be able to play prevent defense without handing out free first downs.

I hope M can develop a decent rushing DE before we meet OSU and CJ, otherwise it may not be much of a game. I think if our offense was scoring more points this would have been a big blow out. The D (if you take away the last prevent drive) did a better job than I expected, keeping MD under 20 points for most of the game. But lack of pass rush is concerning for our final game this season. CJ needs to be sacked and hit hard. He loses accuracy when he gets hit hard!
