[Donovan Clingan/So You're Saying There's A Chance?]

Hoops Recruiting Looking Better For The Bigs Comment Count

The Wolverines are intent on landing a legit center for the 2022 class with Hunter Dickinson a real possibility to pursue professional options after a dominant sophomore season and Moussa Diabate having the athletic upside to potentially be a one-and-done candidate.

While offers were generally limited to a select few prospects over the last year, things have picked up recently as the travel-ball season kicks off and new names are added to the board.

The Latest on Donovan Clingan

Top-50 big Donovan Clingan was in action last weekend at the KC Classic. Much like Hunter Dickinson in high school, the sheer size of Clingan immediately pops off the screen in the clip above. Because of that size, he's able to control the paint defensively by blocking/altering shots. Offensively, his playmaking ability for others on the block + pivoting/footwork are things that also look similar to the reigning B10 freshman of the year at the same stage of development.

On the recruiting front, Michigan made the final 8 for Donovan a few weeks back, but UConn was seemingly the favorite based on proximity to home and family preference. I checked in on things over the weekend and Juwan Howard has put in major work here and the Wolverines may very well be on even ground with the hometown Huskies at this point.

My latest intel seems to be supported by the fact that Clingan tentatively plans to visit Ann Arbor in June per his AAU coach in an article released just yesterday. I'm not ready to claim Michigan as the leader, as Donovan is also slated to visit Syracuse and Ohio State per the same article, but the good guys are definitely surging in this recruitment. The on-court fit here is a no-brainer for both parties, and if Clingan follows through with the visit to Ann Arbor, it's not hard to see Juwan Howard landing his big man of the future.

Flip Rising Up The Board

Last week I mentioned Kyle Filipowski as a criminally undervalued prospect that really impressed me. So much so that he entered my database as a 5-star prospect. Well, it seems the staff has a similar assessment. I'm told Juwan Howard and crew have been in consistent contact since the conclusion of the KYDA Invitational event in Scranton.

I wouldn't get my hopes up here, as Filipowski plays travel-ball for the nephew of Duke leading man Mike Krzyzewski. After chatting with Kyle in Scranton, he definitely seems to fit the Duke culture/profile in my opinion. While Duke has yet to extend an offer, Flip says the contact has increased in recent weeks, with Coach K taking the lead.

If Duke offers soon, this recruitment will likely end in short order. However, the longer Coach K slow-plays Kyle, the chances increase that the field can seize the moment. Flip is obviously a tier below the Duren/Clingan/Lively/Reed group, but he is absolutely rising up the board and could be an offer candidate over the next month if Clingan/Lively don't get on board or provide assurances otherwise.

[Hit THE JUMP for nothing new on Duren/Lively]

Status Quo on Team Final Duo

I'll repeat it again. Number one overall prospect Jalen Duren is going somewhere other than Ann Arbor. Miami hired his former HS/AAU coach and is the likely landing spot should Duren pursue college as a possible reclass to 2021. I will continue to convey this sentiment so that your hopes are not crushed once this inevitably occurs.

The more realistic option is 7-footer Dereck Lively. I was extremely impressed with his performance in Scranton and immediately bumped him to 5-star status in the aftermath. Speaking with Dereck recently, Michigan is likely to get a visit in June, but nothing is locked-in just yet. While I absolutely love what Clingan brings as a back-to-the-basket big with tremendous vision, I have Lively higher on my personal board.

The optimal scenario here is to get both on campus during June. It sends a clear message that its first-some/first-serve for the center spot and inherently exerts pressure/expedites the process for both.

Wonder what will make Duren more money overall: G League, or a one and done at Miami if the NCAA gets of it's butt and allows for players to profit off their image/likeness.

I mentioned this before, but I think this line of thinking is influenced by the Beilein-era where perimeter skill was essentially the only facet emphasized offensively.

It's pretty clear Coach Howard prioritizes size + athleticism + defense + winning in the paint. To that end, Michigan is targeting a different caliber of athlete/prospect that is going to likely correlate with putting pressure on the rim.

I understand agree with your assessment. I just think Clingan has thrived being a big fish in a small pond situation. Is he good? Of course. Really good. But I'm not sure he has the athleticism to match up as well once he gets to the Big Ten. That being said, Juwan is the coach and has a resume that suggests he absolutely knows what he is doing. Doubt him at my own risk I suppose.

The skillsets (as opposed to physical ability) between Dickinson/Clingan definitely have some similarities in terms of vision/passing ability from the post along with solid footwork. Teske was a great outlet passer in HS that could step out and hit a occasional jumper, but was never a back-to-the-basket scorer or facilitator at that age.

Clingan probably isn't as good athletically in relation to Hunter at the same stage in my opinion. But neither are gifted in terms of agility/verticality.

After chatting with Kyle in Scranton, he definitely seems to fit the Duke culture/profile in my opinion.

I don't know what this means exactly, but it can't be a good thing...

thanks Matt

some really intriguing targets...If Michigan lands any of them (Duren is a pipe dream of course), that would be a great addition.

Too bad about the Duke connections for Flip, as i was really, really impressed by his tape.

Matt - what are your thoughts long term on Lively on offense?  He seems like an athletic defender who will alter/block shots and possibly be able to switch on the perimeter or take on stretch fives.  On offense he clearly is athletic and can dunk all over the place....but does he show potential for being a good PnR player?  Back to the basket?  Face-up?  I haven't seen any of those yet in his highlights....curious your scout.

While he didn't connect on any 3s during my live viewing in Scranton, he did attempt two and seemed comfortable doing so. He mechanics are solid and he has good arch.

Again, the Beilein era may have some convinced that it's nearly impossible to play two-bigs unless one is more of a big-wing/stretch PF type, but I don't see it that way.

Offensive spacing is all about gravity, and that can come in the form of vertical gravity as a lob threat (as opposed to perimeter gravity as a shooter). If you have two-big lineups that feature a passer and a lob-threat, the passer in high-low action functionally becomes a perimeter player that sucks out the opposition's big/shotblocker. In the context of Michigan specifically, Dickinson and Diabate are both very good entry-passers with Diabate being a tremendous lob-threat.

Lively is also a good entry passer and an elite lob threat. I have Lively #1 on my board on the basis of defense/finishing alone, but if he even becomes a 25% shooter from distance, he's going to be a lottery pick.

Thanks - I totally understand what you're saying.  While I am excited to explore more of the high/low offense and use the dunker spot in a way we haven't seen since GR3....I think basketball in general (not just under Beilein) has moved to a 4-out offense to spread the floor and give room to operate.  I'm not worried about Howard figuring out options and I do believe that flexibility and diversity are really the key.  (i.e. having guys who can play multiple spots, having depth that can give a team a different look, etc.).

My real question in this case wasn't about the structure of the roster or the names on the floor.  The question is whether Lively shows potential to be more than WCS on offense if he's the primary center we were to land next year (and both Hunter/Diabate leave).  WCS is an elite defender and opportunistic offensive player that has had a long career in the NBA.  I like Lively if he's the college version of that.  I'm just wondering what else he might bring to the table.

With Clingan I can picture a future where he's Hunter 2.0 because I can see glimpses on his highlights and at worst he could be Teske 2.0.  With Lively I am trying to project his role and potential - especially if he's the center in the class.  He doesn't seem to have Diabate's diverse raw skill and I haven't seen much on offense yet.

A young Laimbeer who can jump, is what I see in Clingan. It was once said, someone tried to slip a piece of paper under Laimbeer's feet when he went to shoot, and they couldn't do it.

Michigan has now offered Dereck Lively.

Michigan just offered Top-25 junior Dereck Lively II, he told @Stockrisers. Juwan Howard and Co. entering the race for one of the nation’s top bigs, who has a nice selection of programs.
