Hemingway an ESPN bust
February 1st, 2011 at 9:16 AM ^
It would be nice if ESPN could let his college career play out before labeling him a bust. If he has a good year, I think he has the size and potential to be drafted.

I think we saw flashes of his potential with some the jump balls he went up to get last year. I feel that he is our most underrated receiver

Seriously. ESPN always makes themsleves look like a bunch of douche bags. I expect now, since they are wrong a lot, that Junior goes out and has an incredible year.

You can say that again!

You can thank ESPN's ratings, they had him as the 19th rated prospect in the nation. To compare with rivals he was an average 3 star...
February 1st, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
Exactly, he was the #26 WR in the country to Scout as well. Some ESPN tool probably saw him make a grab at some combine and decided he was an angel who shat receptions and they named him 19th in the country.

I think I'll take the other road on this -- ESPN Recruiting is a bust every year.
February 1st, 2011 at 9:20 AM ^
I'm tired of this shit. How about all three recruiting sites are busts? I mean, fuck. All three have hits and all three have busts. There isn't a lot of variation among the three sites as it is. But somehow, if you pay $1 per month for ESPN insider, and not $20 for rivals/scout it's automatically shit. It makes no sense.

Do you feel better?

I want a goddam liter of COLA

I had to +1 you for that, just because I am currently watching that movie. Awesome!!
Oh yeah, ratings don't mean shit. It's the coaches that make the kids better and the players hard work. Let's all hope these boys put in the xtra work to get better during the off season.

Thus far they were the only ones right about Will Campbell. Still gotta give him time too, but both Scouts and Rivals were very high on him while ESPN thought he would be an O-Lineman and was just above average.

Give the kid some time before calling him a bust!

Eric Berry - Met expectations.

JH had mono and assorted injuries that kept him off the field. Hopefully he shoves this back in ESPN's face next season.

but then ESPN will just say "Look how right we are all the time!!!"

Definitely one of my favorite plays this year. I love how he just side steps all of the defenders and glides into the end zone.

In the kid's defense, this IS his 3rd coach (if you consider that Lloyd earned his committment).
I have a feeling he's going to excel this season.

Not sure what ESPN is smoking. Everyone they label a bust with the exception of Junior, ALL LEFT their schools to go to much smaller programs or quit entirely. Of those that left, none of them made a significant impact at their new school.

<br>Junior has shown flashes of greatness and I hope he kills it this year.

Hemmingway is no bust. He was plauged by injuries early in his carrer and lately has been overshadowed by Roundtree, but he is not a bust. Early in his carrer (2007) he showed flashes of brilliance against Utah with Threet as his QB before his injury and at times last season he was a beast. He was the difference between winning and losing in the indiana and illinois game by making increadible catches. He is a large, physical receiver, with deceptive speed and ellusiveness. ESPN get your act together.

Once again proving they are not the worldwide leader in sports, not in this case !

Counterargument: ESPN hired Pam Ward.
February 1st, 2011 at 10:49 AM ^
Now that's an argument that should be handled carefully.
February 1st, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
I guess they don't let things like injuries, complete overhauls of the offense, and the fact that he still has another year get in the way of their assessment.
February 1st, 2011 at 10:52 AM ^
So let me get this straight - and this is not necessarily in regards to Hemingway, just the article in general - but does anyone else see why this article is just a total joke? They call it an article about "busts" when all it really is is a list of recruits they were wrong about. They might as well say "look how wrong we were in rating the following list of 2007 recruits."
Whoever said it above was right - ESPN had JH rated super high, whereas Rivals and Scout rated him a mid 3-star. So is it more likely he was a bust, or that Rivals and Scout were more accurate in assessing his potential?
February 1st, 2011 at 11:15 AM ^
The tone of the article is more along the lines of "these kids didn't work hard enough because they were set up to be successful" where the busts are concerned rather than the more accurate "wow, we fucking suck at ranking recruits."
February 1st, 2011 at 10:55 AM ^
HEMINGWAY. WITH ONE M. LIKE ERNEST.
I'm sorry, I get major rage when I see players' names misspelled in horrendous, easily correctable ways. We read their names more often than just about everyone else on the planet; we should be able to fucking spell their names properly.
February 1st, 2011 at 11:05 AM ^
I feel better when he's on the field than when he's not. You can't say that about a bust.
February 1st, 2011 at 11:14 AM ^
Can't we just all agree that ESPN sucks at most everything they do and has a hard time analyzing anything other than how best to annoy sports fans?
February 1st, 2011 at 11:27 AM ^
The guy had injury problems his first two years. This year, despite missing three games, he put up nearly 600 yards receiving and was 2nd on the team in yards/game and TD's, while picking up 18.5 yards per catch (best on the team for guys with more than one catch). In other words, he was about as productive as humanly possible given the number of wideouts his team used (splitting catches three ways instead of two) and the nature of the offense they ran.
And, as so many have pointed out, he still has another year to go. Calling the guy a bust is completely ridiculous.
February 1st, 2011 at 4:00 PM ^
I think Hemingway will have a stellar senior year. He showed great hands, leaping ability, and the knack for making me think "How the hell did he get out of that?". Im excited for him this year, and I think we should definitely throw more balls his way. Go blue!
