Official Big Ten Logo/Divisions Reaction Thread.
(Ed-I fail at internets. The links go to the images supplied by the Michigan Football twitter account.)
My thoughts: Meh.
I liked the hidden 11 in the old logo, and hoped there would be one in this, but it's not terrible.
The second logo, a horizontal shortening, is awful and needs to be destroyed.
Your thoughts?

Did they make these 5 minutes before the show started? Gross

+1 to the OP for use of the "change is scary" tag.

would have been better than Leaders and Legends.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:33 PM ^
the logo is whatever. logos are ugly.
but
legends and leaders
goddamn
December 13th, 2010 at 12:35 PM ^
Yeah... I would have been much happier with something unimaginative like East and West.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:34 PM ^
Is how much money did they waste paying some marketing firm to come up with this garbage?
December 13th, 2010 at 12:34 PM ^
But I was having so much fun reading angry comments on 3 threads simultaneously! Mods are bringin' me down.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:35 PM ^
Some stud marketing consulting group probably made a killing in fees whiile slowly pulling the logos and names directly from their rectum.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:36 PM ^
the 2nd "shortened" logo is better than the complete logo.
Plus, as others have noted, it will be easy to tweak in a few years when we go to 16 team superconferences.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:36 PM ^
Everytime I read "Leaders and Legends" I think of League of Legends.
Does that mean if Michigan starts 9-0, we're legendary?
December 13th, 2010 at 12:39 PM ^
"Leaders and Legends: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2" now coming soon on straight-to-video.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:38 PM ^
I'll go against the tide here and actually suggest that I like them. And the division names. Delaney said he wasn't going to single out any individuals or geographies with the names. Maybe "Legends" is a little silly, but I think they are branding themselves as the most traditional and classiest conference and that is what these names are trying to signify.
I'm glad they dropped the silly little "negative space" 1 that was used to jokingly acknowledge that we had 11 teams. If you want your name to be "Big Ten" forever, you should just give up on that kind of gag stuff. I would however have avoided the short logo that suggests "B10" since I think the word "Ten" conveys less about the conferences members.
Best of all are the trophies. I love that they acknowledged all the greats and those greats that we've inherited through Penn State and Nebraska. How can this group complain when Ford, Schembechler and Woodson are all recognized?
December 13th, 2010 at 1:18 PM ^
Don't forget Desmond.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:38 PM ^
Why aren't we in the Leaders? Aren't we the Leaders and Best? Seems like a missed opportunity to me.
December 13th, 2010 at 1:43 PM ^
Because there's leaders, then there's the best.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:45 PM ^
I'm not sure there was any way for them to come up with good division names without using geography or former player/coach names like Bo and Woody. I don't think the division names are great, but they coud have been worse. Could have gone with "Stars" and "Stripes," which might literally have made me puke. These are generic and most people will ignore them, which isn't ideal, but isn't overly embarrassing either.
[EDIT: Agree that it's awesome Ford, Schembechler, and Woodson were all recognized by the awards. And Desmond is recognized in the receiver of the year award, which wasn't mentioned in the broadcast.]
December 13th, 2010 at 12:52 PM ^
I'd also like to add that I like how balanced they were in that regard. You can't be a strong conference if all you do is talk about the top tier teams. Guys like Nile Kinnick, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Anthony Thompson, Bronko Nagurski... these names need to be kept alive.
They almost got the position trophies right as well. Purdue acknowledged for their strong QBs, Wisconsin for their great runners. Just needed to make the wide receiver award one that included Desmond and Braylon. At least they got it right with MSU, recognizing their excellent contributions to the kicking game!
A little grumbly over not giving Tom Harmon his due. Maybe that's just me being a cranky homer.
December 13th, 2010 at 1:09 PM ^
As everybody knows, the three best punters in the history of the Big Ten were Pat O'Dea (Wisconsin), Reggie Roby (Iowa) and Zoltan Mesko (Space). Therefore, the trophy for the best punter in the conference is named the Eddleman-Fields trophy.
Fail.
December 13th, 2010 at 1:12 PM ^
I also thought there would be some Tom Harmon reference SOMEWHERE. Hell, I named my kid Harmon, the least the Big Ten can do is add his name to a trophy.
December 13th, 2010 at 1:16 PM ^
...Desmond Howard. Or are you saying it should have been named after both Howard and Edwards? I do absolutely agree that they missed the boat by not honoring Tom Harmon.
Here are the trophys named after Michigan Men:
Trophy Name | Named for |
Postgraduate Awards | |
Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award |
Gerald R. Ford, Michigan Nile Kinnick, Iowa |
Annual Awards/Trophies | |
Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year |
Bronislau "Bronko" Nagurski, Minnesota Charles Woodson, Michigan |
Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year |
Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes, Ohio State Glenn Edward "Bo" Schembechler, Michigan |
Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year |
Pat Richter, Wisconsin Desmond Howard, Michigan |

I like the new Brandon Graham logo. I'm not sure why they put a "1" in the middle, but it looks good.
Jokes aside, I think it looks fine. Here is a link to some in-use images by Pentagram, the company that designed the logo.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:56 PM ^
includes world-class academic institutions such as Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, Northwestern, and University of Wisconsin–Madison
FAIL
December 13th, 2010 at 1:26 PM ^
When I started reading the text, that jumped out at me. If they are going to list half the conference as "examples of world-class academic institutions", they had at least a 50% chance of including M. This is both a logic and statistical FAIL.
December 13th, 2010 at 2:35 PM ^
Pentagram’s Michael Gericke (a graduate of the University of Wisconsin) and Michael Bierut (husband of 30 years to an Ohio State alumna) have designed the new logo for the conference, announced today.
December 13th, 2010 at 6:15 PM ^
Apparently, the Yale School of Architecture asked Michael Bierut to design their "Structure of Light" poster... which turned out to be quite the spelling challenge for him as his original sketch spelled out "Strecture fo light".
And that, of course is something you always worth highlighting in your portfolio...

That's what I get for just looking at the pictures.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:41 PM ^
Does anyone know where the list of names for all the trophies can be found?
December 13th, 2010 at 12:42 PM ^
It took me a while to figure out that the G is a zero, not a six.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:42 PM ^
We are Leaders, Legends, and the Best.
I can live with that.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:48 PM ^
I don't mind the logos though I agree they look like something that was just thrown together in ten minutes.
But yeah, the names are awful, especially since they seem to relegate one of the divisions to the past. And they give absolutely no help in differentiating one division from the other, which I think is the most important thing division names should be doing. I doubt these names will ever be commonly used except in official publications, much like FBS and FCS.
Seriously, sticking with X and O, as BTN was provisionally using, would have been better. Or East and West...even if it's not a strict geographic split, it's easy enough to remember that East is the one with PSU in it and West is the one with Nebraska.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:46 PM ^
right corner, I believe this explains it all...
December 13th, 2010 at 12:51 PM ^
But then I noticed that everything was spelled correctly.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:46 PM ^
Way to go Big Ten commissioner and Big Ten execs for approving this humongous bucket of fail!
December 13th, 2010 at 12:46 PM ^
I can't believe that the people who came up with the "New Coke" idea, found work again.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:47 PM ^
The division names are so lousy that even something truly evil like "Scarlet" and "Grey" would have been an improvement.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:48 PM ^
has to be the Griese-Brees QB trophy. Who the hell wants to honored for best shart of the year?
December 13th, 2010 at 12:54 PM ^
How about the shart division and the fart division. That would've been better.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:49 PM ^
oh cant wait for the"has been" jokes to come next year when people explain why we are the legends and OSU is the leaders.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:54 PM ^
SEC East , SEC West
Pac 10 North, Pac 10 South
Big 12 North, Big 12 South
.....
Big 10 Leaders, Big 10 Legends
fail.
December 13th, 2010 at 12:51 PM ^
Schools by number of trophy honorees:
OSU: 5
Michigan, Wisconsin: 4
Illinois, MSU, Minny, PSU, Purdue: 3
IU, Iowa, NW: 2
Chicago, Nebraska: 1

Hail! To the Victors Valiant
Hail! To the Conquering Heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan
The Legends and Best
December 13th, 2010 at 12:57 PM ^
The logo is simple, recognizable, and elegant. The division names are not unimaginative like "North" or "South", but actually mean something to our conference. The whole thing is very modern, which I really like.
December 13th, 2010 at 1:07 PM ^
the two guys that did this are from the University of Cincinnati and Wisconsin!
