I remember opening game of 2004 hearing who the quarterback was and saying "Chad WHO?"

01/20/2016 - 3:36pm Same

I was a just a wee freshman tuba player in jan 2006, but I remember reading mgoblog in the chem building between lab and lecture.  Didn't create an accout until 2010.

Remember when we were so innocent as to name a 7-5 season 'The Year of Infinite Pain?"  We were adorable back then.

In rugby they just made it part of the game. :D

10/29/2015 - 4:31pm Never played football, but

Never played football, but I've played rugby for about a decade now.  The big things we try to tell football players are...

1. you MUST wrap.  Not only is it the rule, but it's the only way to ensure that you are going to stop the runner.  Relying on mass is a very poor way to tackle, especially if you're playing somebody who has good balance.

2. Head positioning--football players tend to put their heads in front of/inside the runner, rather than behind/outside.  When you have a helmet, you don't need to worry about getting kneed in the face.

3. In rugby, giving up a yard to make a solid tackle is nearly always the right move.  So, you let the attacker fall forward to ensure you get a very solid wrap and bring them down--which also helps make it harder for the attacking team to secure the ball in a ruck.  In football, that might get you chewed out by your coach for giving up yards after contact.

10/29/2015 - 4:21pm The rugby tackles are just **better** tackles.

The thing about rugby tackles is that they're not only safer, they're more likely to bring somebody to ground--especially when there's a big size or strength difference.  It's not so easy to just run over or through somebody when they've got their arms latched around your thighs. I mean, Kovaks wasn't the biggest guy and he pretty much made his daily bread on quality wrap tackles.

We've all seen somebody go flying in for a shoulder tackle only to have the runner stay on his feet, right?  I mean, this is not a TD if either OSU defender wraps Robinson up.

10/29/2015 - 4:15pm Eh...

Over-reliance on TMO and replay is becoming an increasing problem in rugby.  It really only replaces the problems you already have with things like:

--Is the person across the line?
--is the ball downed or is it knocked on (fumbled)
--is a defenders hand under the ball?
--was the scoring player illegally makign a 'second motion'?

And this is ignoring the fact that in rugby you get your "one motion" to either score the try or set the ruck.  In football, you're just down, so you'd still have a huge issue with replay so you can tell whether soembody is down before they were able to ground the ball.

You used to be able to get audio over the internet, but it was pretty spotty.

10/19/2015 - 8:34pm agreed

The reason Spartan Bob is famous is becuse a miscue led **directly** to a game being lost.

Unfortunatley, you can't really point at any one blown call and say "that one, that one there is what lost us the game!"

10/19/2015 - 8:30pm Neg me.

I double posted and must be punished.

I imagine Sharp is just masturbaing furiously and--

oh god, why did I think of that.

10/19/2015 - 1:35pm What is the other option?

Be a **Lions** fan and see shit like this week in and week out?

thank god for the Red Wings. They've sustained me through some dark days.

10/19/2015 - 1:34pm Seconded.

That was the only time I have ever started jumping up and down simply because of a punt.

10/19/2015 - 10:20am come on

It's not exactly a secret that broken plays happen.  I'm sure that the punt team runs scenarios of what to do if the snap is bobled, if the kick is blocked, etc.

The problem was that this was an exceptionally weird play where a lot of strange things happened.

10/19/2015 - 10:17am Eh...

I don't know many rugby players that would try to box kick like that when they panic, though.  First instict on a broken play for most the rugby players I know is to scoop the ball, run as far forward as you can, and then stay on your feet as long as you can to give your team time to get back on-sides and secure a ruck...

10/18/2015 - 11:35pm Sparty has a ton of bandwagon

Sparty has a ton of bandwagon fans--not that they'd ever admit it with their "walmart wolverine' nonsense.

10/18/2015 - 4:32pm "You're" Officiating comments?

"Your" an MSU graduate, I take it?

10/18/2015 - 4:27pm You're not wrong...

I'd agree with everything in this **except** the bolden penalty.  Michigan lost one of its "better talents" becuase of a suspect call that was shown to be aboslutely ludicrous upon review.  And yet it was somehow upheld.

It certainly wasn't the *deciding* factor, but it's crazy to say it didn't impact the game.

10/18/2015 - 4:15pm You know what's amazing?

If he'd just fallen on it, we'd all be talking about what a great game o"niel had.  I mean, he had an EIGHTY YARD PUNT!!

Just goes to show the cruel vicissitudes of football, I guess.

10/18/2015 - 2:41pm It's possible to have a

It's possible to have a discussion about the failings of the referres--who were abysmal for BOTH sides--without trying to blame the loss on the officiating.

That game was horribly officated.  Period.  DId the officiating affect the outcome?  No.  Should we talk about how bad the refs were to demand higher standards moving forward? Yes.

10/18/2015 - 1:14am We get bolden back next

We get bolden back next week.

All I got.

Super-sayenizing atheletes is probably my new favorite meme.

10/08/2015 - 8:35pm Can't make it

Ex-MMB from 05,06, 07 (tubas, what?!} but I won't be in town for this one.

Saving that for next weekend against sparty. :D

10/06/2015 - 4:19pm Agreed.  DG will always have

Agreed.  DG will always have an air of "what could have been." I can only imagine how he would have played with a proper coach.

Can anybody think of another example where such a stellar talent went to such waste?

Still, Robinson will always be my favorite QB at Michigan.  Guy stuck around and gave us basically the only good things about the past decade.

09/26/2015 - 5:13pm I promise you...

The tubas have already taught themselves that bass line are are merely waiting for approval.

09/25/2015 - 5:19pm I agree

The Rose Bowl (the event) is fantastic.  The Rose Bowl (the Stadium) is pretty lackluster.  Ads ads ads.  Almost as bad as Spartyland.

09/25/2015 - 5:16pm ...why would they need to?

If Chicago is anythig like detroit, there ought to be dozens of ice rinks in the area--at least one will be big enough.

I think this pretty accurately portrays my feelings on the matter. Well done.

You sure about that?

10/06/2014 - 4:14pm No skates, wood floors, tiny nets and huge pucks?

You guys sure play some *weird* hockey...

10/05/2014 - 4:24pm Don't worry...

The Red Wings start this week!

10/03/2014 - 2:03pm You think that's football

You think that's football you're watching?

Contingent on RR finding a competent DC and actually allowing him to do his job, I agree

10/02/2014 - 12:42pm I think the issue at heart

I think the issue at heart here is that the neurologist doesnt' seem to have ever even gotten the chance to do anything about it.

Go watch the video--when morris DOES come off the field, he goes and talks with some assitant-coach looking fellow, not the PT or medical staff.  The fact that somebody didn't immediately take him to see the medical staff is on the coaches and nobody else.

I suppose you could say that the Dr. should have forced Morris off the field, but what authority does he have to do that?  If this were the NFL or NHL, where the medical staff is granted authority to remove a player from a game over the heads of the coaches and the players, you'd have much more solid ground to stand on, I think.

09/29/2014 - 4:43pm shhhhhhhhh....

let me keep my dreams.

09/29/2014 - 4:12pm The White stripes cut

Was completely brilliant.  Couldn't have put it into better words than that.

01/09/2014 - 2:55pm You mean the games where....

...opponents scored an average of almost 40 points against michigan?  Come on, you can hardly blame the offense for not scoring 6 touchdowns a game against teams with good defenses.

Even a mediocre defense would have made a huge difference that year.

11/21/2012 - 11:33pm so...

"it is not a particularly hard accomplishment to finish with a good gpa and not be a completely shitty football fan while attending school."

So...this right here is where you're assuming everybody else has the same titanic capabilities as yourself. I'm glad college was so easy for you, but I remember working my ass off and still only got mediocre grades. I guess I just wasn't as smart as you.

(that last line isn't supposed to be a sarcastic stinger or anything. I really mean it.)

11/21/2012 - 11:30pm god damnit

I'm a dumbass. I meant it for the other guy. The really pretenious one claiming that anybody who chose academics over football was essentially a nazi.

Sorry, Mexile. Are we still cool?

11/21/2012 - 11:28pm You want me to fetch a stool... you can climb down off that high horse?

11/11/2012 - 2:14am Allow me to speak for the whole marching band when I say

that "I think exactly at gametime would be a reasonable cutoff" is not a good answer.

11/26/2011 - 9:17pm Just like, my opinion, man

Double post fail

11/26/2011 - 9:16pm Just like, my opinion, man

I kind of like it better. I mean, I as always wondering why their helmets were so dull--when I think gold I think shiny, not a sort of deep mustard yellow/brown.

11/26/2011 - 9:12pm I endorse this

There should be a thread dedicated to the hilariously pained expressions Kelly makes on the sideline whenever ND fails to execute.
