Here we go again- B1G Hockey is a tirefire

Well, college hockey in the B1G kicked off for real this weekend. Much like last year, it looks like the B1G is going to struggle with national prominence. First the results:

  • Northern Michigan 3 @ Wisconsin 3 OT
  • Ohio State 0 @ Bowling Green 2
  • Penn State 6 @ Canisius 1
  • Vermont 3 @ Minnesota 0

Friday, October 16, 2015

  • Mercyhurst 4 @ Michigan 6
  • Michigan State 2 @ Denver 4
  • Miami 3 @ Ohio State 2
  • Notre Dame 7 @ Penn State 4

The Take-Aways

  • Two weeks into the season, only Michigan and Penn St have shown signs of life. Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio St are all winless, with all three looking like they're going to have issues this year-- Minnesota with replacing goaltending and upper class talent; Wisconsin with avoiding a death spiral of ineffective recruiting & player development, coupled with a HC on the hot seat; Ohio St being Ohio St hockey. Michigan St only has a win against Lake St with two uncompetitive losses to Denver. Hildebrand's looking vulnerable in addition to the usual MSU lack of offensive firepower. All the bad results from Minn, Wiscy, and OSU being OOC losses to NCHC teams will kill us down the road in strength of schedule calculations.
  • That being said, Penn St looks good in context. A split with ND is a respectable showing, and considering their trajectory, this could be a leap year for the Nittany Lions. They have scoring (their PP looks legit), but their goaltending may be a liability. I need to watch them more in person.
  • Michigan will probably not have a problem scoring goals (again), but uncertain goaltending and a loose defense will be issues (again). I've seen 2 of the 3 games Michigan has played this year so far in person, and here's to hoping Nagelvoort takes the job and runs with it, because Racine did not look good. I will say that encouraging signs are Nieves seems ready to make a big leap, and the passing against Mercyhurst was much improved over what I'd seen in the past two years.

Early season bottom line

  • If you asked me to call it now, I'd say this is going to be a 2 team race for the conference title between us and Penn St, and if we get competent goaltending, Michigan could run away with it.
  • I'd be suprised if B1G gets two teams in the NCAA tourney, with the exception of Michigan winning the conference by a large margin, and then a Cinderella team wins the conference tourney. If it's a close 2 team race between Michigan and Penn St for the conference, unless both teams only have losses to each other in conference, it's probably a one bid league.
  • In a "damn it" realization, I think it's safe to say the NCHC got the better of the CCHA dissolution, probably even long term. Every single one of their teams except for Western Michigan and St Cloud St have established themselves as national level programs now. Maybe NoDak takes a step back if the coaching loss really was that big, but they're still prominent enough they can absorb a couple down years and regain status fairly fast.
  • Hate to say this, but the next two weeks are probably make-or-break for Michigan's at-large dreams. Sweep #11 Union, RPI, and Robert Morris from now through Halloween, Michigan can probably split the BU and still be OK. Lose two of the next four, we may need a Boston sweep to keep at-large dreams alive. Such is life when you're in such a sucky conference.

Thanks for putting this together.

I agree with you in our need for Nagelvoort to be the guy. Racine just hasn't looked good, especially on Friday against Mercyhurst.

Boo (and the rest of the offense) looked pretty good this weekend, so here's to scoring a bunch of goals, and crossing our fingers on the defensive end.

Surprised to see Minnesota be so lifeless so early. Might be a one-team race

Giving up 6 goals to Mercyhurt makes me very concerned but the whole Big Ten might suck so much that it doesn't matter if the D is poor again

Minnesota is in a rare rebuilding year. They're replacing a huge amount of high-end talent. The young players they bring in are obviously talented but many of them come straight out of the Minnesota High School league instead of juniors, so the adjustment period when they have to see a lot of ice time early is very noticable.

Minnesota had 5 freshman skaters and only 4 seniors on the roster, so when you include they have to replace Wilcox in net, yeah, it's going to be a rebuilding year. But they're going to be a candidate for one of those teams to improve by the end of the year. Michigan has to bury them in early season matchups.

I recognize this may be a dumb question, but are they on BTN or similar channel?  Have you ever watched the live feed via mgoblue?  How is the quality of the feed?

I never get down there to see a game, but would love to watch.

It's RPI, not RIT and RPI beat #BC at home, so they don't seem to be a drag* on the SoS at this point. Still, I agree with your overall point that a sweep this weekend is crucial for at-large purposes.

I also don't see Minn completely folding, but you've presumably seen them play and I have not.

* EDIT: well, RPI seems to have lost their exhibition and lost to Lowell and then swept by the Alaskas on the road, so.... they are 1-3 with a home win over #1 (at the time) and a loss in the exhibition

St. Cloud State isn't a national level program but Colorado College is? The next time you hear anything close to national news about Colorado College will be when they start considering dropping their hockey program again.

I think it's too early to make a forecast.  I saw the games over the weekend and couldn't reach any conclusions.  There were signs of last year's failings with the odd man rushes and the poor goaltending by Racine on Friday.  There were some signs of strong play on offense but nothing like the Hyman Larkin Selman line from last year.  There was better defensive play on Sunday.  The special teams need some improvement as we gave up a couple of power play goals and our power plays were not overly effective.  The freshmen look like they have a lot of potential.

It was good to get the victories over the weekend because losses at home hurt us in the PWR.  The poor performance of other B1G teams also will hurt us so I agree with the assessment that unless we have big non-conference road victories this month or run through the B1G we could have to win the B1G tournament to get in the NCAA's.  With the B1G tourney in St. Paul, the Gophs have a distinctive advantage there as they will play in front of their home fans.

It would be great if we could send Red off on a high note.  Go Blue!

B1G hockey was such a bad idea it had to be Dave Brandon's. The CCHA was a great hockey conference. The GLI was a holiday tradition in my family. Not so much anymore. My interest in college hockey has diminished greatly.

The BTHC was going to happen once Penn State started a program whether Dave Brandon or Jim Hackett or Pope Francis was here. I too miss the CCHA, but I just don't think we were ever going to be able to stay separate with the requisite amount of teams (six) being D1

And the GLI does still happen you know, right? It's actually one of the only ways you'll get to see Michigan plays some of the other Michigan schools right now so in that regard the GLI has gotten more interesting since the BTHC in my opinion

You are correct in your assessment. MIchigan is the only highly ranked Big Ten team.

I remember the 90s/early 00s when UW, MSU and Minnesota were always good.

It's sad to see two negative trends combining here.  UM hockey has been on a steady downhill the last 4 years (really longer if the 2011 anomaly is disregarded) and B1G hockey has been a complete disaster.  Noticed that Yost was only 2/3 full (if that) on Sunday and I get quite a few emails from the Ticket office wanting to sell me more hockey tickets.  Like last year, it looks like the team and the conference will be mediocre and that combination makes it likely that UM will miss the tournament again.  I hope Mr. Hackett turns his attention to the hockey program because it needs new leadership and a new approach.
