Rumor: Arizona State to the B1G for hockey

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

i'm a regular over at uscho and the Arizona State Hockey thread has been getting a lot of buzz lately as multiple people are claiming that the rumors of ASU to the B1G for hockey are true.

one post-

ASU will be joining the Big 10. Expect an announcement soon. They've already begun notifying their recruits.

Also, from a Michigan poster-

Take it FWIW, but I'm a donor to Michigan's program and I've heard through the grapevine recently that Arizona State is in fact going to be added to the B1G as an affiliate member for hockey. There were discussions on group trips for alumni/donors to AZ for games. The same scenario where Johns Hopkins was added as an affiliate member to create the B1G's sponsorship of lacrosse.

Also that another full-time B1G member school is seriously looking to add hockey now that they have a facility that's in the works.

I don't know if Nebraska can support college hockey in both Omaha and Lincoln, on top of junior hockey in the area. Not sure how much fan support there is going to be in an area that's not known as a hockey crazy environment to begin with.

That certainly seems plausible. I'm sure a good chunk of UNO fans are also Nebraska fans for football and basketball. A UNL hockey team probably guts a good percentage of UNOs fan support. Perhaps UNLs basketball arena has the hockey rink option on the chance they sort something out one day then

I'm always a fan of getting new hockey teams. I am still pissed that we left the CCHA but that horse has already been beaten. ASU seems a little too far away to be in the same conference. But we added the Maryland and Rutgers TV market so everybody can afford it, right?

That's a good point. I forgot about the Alaska team. I really don't care who is in the conference to be honest. If they want to travel half way across the US for every road game that is more power to them. Playing different teams and making the BIG Ten conference bigger is fine by me.

I know ASU was probably going to end up in the NCHC or B1G but I always figured it would be the NCHC since the Colorado Schools are at least in the vicinity. Hope they like flying because their closest away game is a cool 1,700 miles to Madison

On the other side, I can see why. ASU's program won't be starting up with the same stability that PSU's did. IIRC Penn State's program was fully endowed at start-up. ASU is not. Joining the B1G should give them a reliable source of hockey revenue and instant credibility to recruits. I imagine they'll have a decent amount of success with midwest recruits as they can sell several games 'near' home every year.
