Danny Hope's Team Is Organized And Supervisory Comment Count

Brian

For the duration of his tenure, Joe Tiller was infamously supposed to be the guy behind Tom Dienhart's bitchy anonymous quotes in the Sporting News. So it's good to know that the mustachioed Wilford Brimley impersonator doesn't fall far from the diabeetus commercial:

"We've had about 90 kids on campus all summer and they've been in summer school. We don't have a general studies major at Purdue so they've had to take real classes too."

This, as anyone who remembers the grand tenure of Garrett Bushong can tell you, is hypocritcal bunk. Purdue is an engineering college full of nerds that preserves a small section of itself so it can jam Big Ten athletes onto its campus. This is totally fine by me as long as their head coach doesn't take shots at Michigan for doing the same thing. Presenting the Purdue major breakdown*:

The Grand Accounting

Type Count Pct
One Specific Fake Football Major 21 34%
Physical Education 14 23%
Standard-Issue Cake Majors 14 23%
You Too Can Supervise A McDonald's 7 11%
Actual Engineering Type Majors 6 10%
Total 62

60% of Purdue's declared majors are either in one specific fake major or physical education. 90% of them are in stuff like the aforementioned, construction, or the usual diet of communications/sociology. Danny Hope should stick to personal grooming tips during his public appearances. That is all.

*(Notes and caveats: Purdue's site was pretty good about picking out walk-ons but some of the guys without bios or at positions like third string kicker or backup longsnapper didn't explicitly mention it. Kickers, punters, long snappers, and anyone without a bio or with a really short bio that didn't mention recruiting rankings is excluded. So are the folk explicitly declared walk-ons. Undecided players and those who "plan on" majoring in something or another are excluded, but the breakdown of the planning stuff was basically more of the same with a greater emphasis on "management.")

This I know: Danny Hope is a fucking tool.

This I hope: U-M curbstomps Purdue this year.

This I want to believe but simply don't know enough to render a judgment: Is U-M the only school with a "General Studies" major? That is, are we sure Hope's comment was a crack at U-M?

Someone remind me what Hope did last year at the end of the game to RR.  Didn't he basically make RR speak to a Purdue team player, in essence, to force some kind of apology.

Hope clearly has anger issues.  Maybe this year after Michigan whoops Purdue, we'll get to see Hope thrashing uncontrollably and throwing punches at imaginary snake-oil sales specialists.

Feat of Clay

August 5th, 2010 at 4:10 PM ^

After Purdue's historic win last year at Michigan, Hope met Rodriguez at midfield and motioned for offensive lineman Zach Reckman to join them. According to Rodriguez, Hope said, "Thanks, coach. Really appreciate what you did," referring to Rodriguez calling for the Big Ten to assess all potential unsportsmanlike incidents equally. Michigan had seen its starting linebacker Jonas Mouton suspended for throwing a punch against Notre Dame, and Rodriguez identified Reckman's late hit against Northern Illinois as another potential violation for the Big Ten to review. The league concurred and suspended Reckman for a game, a decision that didn't sit well with Hope.

For the record it was Joe Tiller that made the snake oil salesman comment, not Hope. Also As much as I though Hope was immature for what he did after last years game. I don't think Hope has anger issues just ask his players. He is a really passionate guy though from my expiriences with him. I still hope Michigan beats down Purdue though.

Oh, good ole Danny Hope. Last year, at Freshman orientation, this guy said the most important thing in college was to HAVE FUN (in his southern drawl). He failed to mention athletics. It doesn't surprise me at all that he mentions this. He is singlehandedly, the cockiest coach in the conference.

Also, Organizational Leadership Skills (OLS) is a complete JOKE at Purdue. Basically, if you get a degree with it, you are bound for a youth camp leader. What else can you do with an OLS? I'd have to say that Chris Kramer is the poster boy for OLS...

PS...I'm about to be in IE, and even though it will appear to be one of the easier engineering disciplines at Purdue, I still have to take some rather bang-your-head-against-the-wall-at-3:01-am classes such as ME 200 (Thermo), ECE 201 (Linear Circuits (some genius told me this was a "real bitch")), and some others... I'm not gonna get all huffy puffy about people not calling it engineering... Frankly, I don't give a rat's ass...

Although I have very strong negative feelings towards Danny and his football team, I see his point.  If a man (or program) is measured by his enemies, Danny and Purdue become more relevent by picking a fight with Michigan.  To me, this seems like a poor attempt at building the legitimacy of a flailing program that hit its peak with Drew Brees and has struggled mightly before and since...  I'm not concerned with what Danny says.  His football team has no heated, national attention-getting rivalries and this is just a poor attempt at creating one, in my opinion.

Physical Eduaction is very important for all of the fat asses walking around.  Don't poo poo PE, it is a real major.  A little movement wouldn't hurt all of the little fat kids that spend all of their time on facebook and playing Xbox.

However, Danny Hope is still a little bitch and is a disgrace to the mustache.

Yeah, Danny Hope is one of the bigger douches in college sports, mostly because the other guys with massive egos (Saban, Meyer, etc.) have actually, you know, won something.  Going 5-7 is nothing to write home about.  I'm sure there are a couple of very hard-working athletes on the football team who challenge themselves in the classroom, but all schools have those kids.  Purdue is a good engineering school with some challenging courses, but slapping a name like OLS on what is basically general studies is just ignorant.

blueheron

August 5th, 2010 at 2:42 PM ^

Non-seriously...

We're assuming malice where ignorance might be a better explanation.  Mr. Hope went to Eastern Kentucky University and, as a footballer, probably took their "General Studies" route.  That school probably graduates a lot of gym teachers.  It's quite possible that all the "management" majors at Purdue look real to him.

August 5th, 2010 at 1:07 PM ^

Here's the thing - I was a sociology major, and I do very well for myself.  Had I majored in General Studies I would be doing no worse off.  Why did I major in sociology?  Because it was fucking easy.  There, sorry if I offended any other soc alumni.  I agree that it should go in the "football players major in this because it's not hard" category.

The other thing - Fuck Danny Hope.  Purdue has always been a team about which I was pretty ambivalent.  Not anymore.  I want to beat them by a hundred.  I want Roy Roundree to score 7 touchdowns and then pull a girl out of the stands and have her score a few more.

The BGS thing AGAIN? Someone get on the Jim James Johnathan Carty, Esq. EMERGENCY  HOTLINE.

A few things, based on my attempted debunking of this BGS BULLCHIPS from 3 years ago (that long? I'm getting old)

  • Kinesiology is an actual science, in that they study the biochemical and biophysical aspects of human body movement, and the scientific method is used in peer reviewd literature, etc.
  • The BGS IS NOT A MAJOR, it is a DEGREE. Say this to yourselves outloud 3 times. I can't emphasize this enough. It has similar requirements of any other DEGREE. Does it require FL? No, but the FL requirment at UM is above and beyond what is required of most (95%+?) undergraduate institutions in the US.
  • Both of the above avenues of study can be taken advantage of.... like any other course of study. You get out what you put in.
  • Does UM or any other institution push kids into BGS? Depends on where you draw the line, but it is MUCH more flexible not only due to the lack of FL courses, but also b/c the upper level courses requirements allow more flexibility as well. Scheduling must be a nightmare for D1 athletes, and if you need course ENG 450 for the traditional major and it's ONLY offered in the semester when your sport is in season, at ONE time... that's a tough thing to deal with. The BGS route allows more flexibility here. I'm sure every academic advisor makes this clear to students who have tough schedules, including athletes.
  • The BGS allows you to study 2-3 topics, so if a certain Stanford coach who may or may not have been drafted by the Bears, took the Colts the the brink of the SB and
guaranteed a victory over OSU while he was in college wanted to major in say..... history, the BGS allows you to take about 20 credits of histroy classes, among other things.

As a side note, calculus is not calculus everywhere. At about the same time as the BGS crap came out, ND people went all, 'LOL UM, dumb public school' and started talking about how EVERY ND undergrad was required to take calculus. 1st, that was a lie or at least a misunderstanding and 2nd, ND offers like 3-4 levels of calculus. Some of those calc classes are not at all on the level of Math 115, 116 at UM.

bronxblue

August 5th, 2010 at 4:18 PM ^

With regards to the ND Calculus thing - I had a friend at ND around that time and he confirmed that they should probably have called it "Math" instead, since what they termed "calculus" was not close to the topics covered in Math 115.  Sure, lots of kids did take legit calculus at ND, but certainly not every student.

As Purdue Student I can honestly say Purdue's OLS program is probably the biggest joke of a major in the history of any university. However, Management is actually Business Administration at Purdue and is in our Business School (Krannert School of Management) and is a quality program and is just as good as accounting here. While Krannert is not nearly as good as Ross or some other business schools it is a Top 25 US program depending on your publication of choice.

EDIT: Also Education (aka Kerrigan's Math Education is a joke at Purdue so you can knock that down a couple notches)

mgolund

August 5th, 2010 at 2:01 PM ^

So I wanted to know what OLS was like at Purdue.  I emailed a buddy of mine who is a proud Purdue grad to ask what it was all about.  His response:

OLS is the most ridiculous major at Purdue.  OLS guarantees that you will have no job options after college.  It’s full of jocks, but there are a few random fraternity idiots sprinkled in there.  I knew a few guys that did it because it helps with a grad school application to dominate the douches and have a 3.9 for doing absolutely nothing.

Go Blue.

EDIT: I did not see the Purdue student's explanation before I posted this.  Seems pretty consistent.

My favorite was years ago, some guy (maybe Colorado) had "Women's Studies" as his major.  Just blew me away - he must have thought it was going to snag him extra women, but instead exposed him to 4 years of classes pointing out how much men suck.

1. Garrett Bushong is an idiot and deserved his proper public shaming.

2. OLS is jokingly referred to as Our Lord & Savior on campus because it keeps so many guys eligible.

3. I've done a profile of every player on the roster at Hammer & Rails this summer. There are definitely some good kids taking serious majors, but there is a bunch of OLS. Every school has it.

4. Majoring in communications at an engineering school was a huge mistake.

I don't know if he thinks that he can actually create a "rivalry" with Michigan, or that most Purdue alumni even want that. I suppose some probably enjoy the digs at RR, but most of us probably think this way:

1. We have a rival in the conference already. It's IU. Keeping the Bucket is important. Creating other rivalries is not.

2. We also have a rival outside the conference. Focus on them. Beat Notre Dame, and pretty much everyone else is happy.

3. Purdue is not a football school. It's a basketball school. Winning the Big Ten is nice. Going to the Rose Bowl is nice. But that's all it is. We'd like to see the football team do well, but it plays second fiddle to men's basketball. Stirring up a storm with Michigan isn't going to change that. (And if Painter gets Purdue to the Final Four this year, nobody's going to care what happened to the football team. Well, we'll care a little, but we sure won't remember in April.)

4. If you insist on creating a rivalry in the conference, pick Ohio State. No one likes them either. (Hell, we also have a trophy rivalry with Illinois. I don't think we need to be "rivals" with half the conference.)

Of course Purdue has easy majors, Hope ought to know that. We're just like most of the other Big Ten schools: strong academics with easier ways out for those who want or need that. It's foolish to pretend otherwise and stupid to suggest so publicly when it's so easy to refute.

The whole thing speaks to a lack of focus. Hope's message should be this: beat ND, beat IU, go to bowl games, win them. Do not pretend we sit at the big kids' table. We do not.

There may be some other Purdue alumni who disagree with me; so be it.

zlionsfan

August 6th, 2010 at 11:09 PM ^

this is not the SEC. We don't need coaches taking potshots at one another. If people are commenting about Purdue's APR (which is rather poor and is already costing us in men's basketball and men's golf) or its graduation rate (which for football is also poor), then I think Hope's better off saying "look, yeah, it's been a problem, but we're focusing on getting these kids what they need to be successful. It's not that they aren't trying, it's on us to provide an environment for them to succeed and we haven't done that."

Take the focus off the players (where it shouldn't be anyway) and put it on the head coach and AD. There's no need to get other schools involved.

Besides, if anything, we ought to be rooting for other schools to maintain their academic reputations. That's one thing that makes this conference not like, say, the Big 12. If kids struggle to stay eligible, it's a problem and we want to fix it, it isn't something we accept because "who cares as long as they win" or crap like that.

I admit I'm biased; as an Ann Arbor native and Purdue grad, I do not want to see these two teams drawn into conflict. But it's still unnecessary.

can there be this many posts ragging on IOE, soc, etc. but no one has a problem with math education being under real degrees?

If you think organic chemistry, physics, and human anatomy are physical fitness classes, I would question whether or not you even went to college... and that just scratches the surface of science classes and doesn't mention all of the clinical health science classes.

thought it was worth mentioning...

Are you guys a little paranoid? Hope didn't mention any particular school in his comments. A few things you may not know: IU does have a General Studies major (or at least they did at one time).

Due to the structure of the state university system in Indiana, IU and Purdue are not permitted to have "competing" majors ie, no med school at Purdue, no engineering school at IU. Therefore, IU has a business school, Purdue has a management school.

I had some roommates in construction management...they studied concrete burst strength and things like that...kind of applied engineering. I don't know anything about OLS.

I'd think you would have to admit RR tends to make enemies...talk to the people at WVU about that. As far as our history,RR started out by stealing one of Tiller's recruits at the 11th hour; part of the business, I guess. Then he called out one of our players by name last year for a cheap shot against another team. In the 40 years I've been watching B10 FB, I've never seen this. Bad form, IMHO.

TMill, a Purdue blogger, mentioned that RR had a higher pucker factor this year at the B10 meeting. I can't help but think this is accurate. I'm sure there are UM people that are concerned with his job performance.

BTW, enjoyed watching UM beat ND last year. Would like nothing better than a B10 sweep over them this year.

Are you guys a little paranoid? Hope didn't mention any particular school in his comments.

I asked this way below in this thread, but didn't get any answer. I'm not sure why everyone jumped to that conclusion, because

  • there might be more than one school with this degree; and
  • "General Studies" just sounds like the kind of thing you'd pull out of your ass if you were being an uninformed, hypocritical, sanctimonious prick like Hope was.

I'd think you would have to admit RR tends to make enemies... talk to the people at WVU about that.

If you knew anything about this case, you'd know why that was the worst fucking example you could possibly have come up with. Those people are, literally, insane. No less a humble soul than Bill Stewart is getting death threats for his performance over the last two years. Insane, I tell you.

RR started out by stealing one of Tiller's recruits at the 11th hour; part of the business, I guess.

This claim has been thoroughly fisked on this blog. Decommits happen all the time, probably especially when coaching changes happen (i.e., Michigan lost some (Mallett, Boren) and gained some (Shaw, Roundtree) when RR took over). The only difference is Tiller bitched about it.

Then he called out one of our players by name last year for a cheap shot against another team. In the 40 years I've been watching B10 FB, I've never seen this. Bad form, IMHO.

You may be right, and if he did it by name, that is bad form. But after literally minutes of furious googling, all I could find was this direct quote from RR:

It’s funny you say that because I saw a Big Ten game in the locker room,” Rodriguez said. “In some highlights, and it was the end of the game, and a guy jumped on someone at the last play of the game and did a little of this right here (making a motion with his elbow and forearm).

Is that a non-football act? It probably is. So that may be turned in. We’ll see what happens.

Now, of course everyone knew what he was talking about, but at least from that quote you're wrong about calling him by name. I am prepared to be corrected on this, though.

BTW, enjoyed watching UM beat ND last year. Would like nothing better than a B10 sweep over them this year.

Amen, brother.

but you certainly aren't completely right. I seriously doubt there is anything preventing IU Purdue, and other state schools (because, you know, there are others) from having similar majors, never mind identical majors like, say, Computer Science. Purdue doesn't have a business school, but does offer business majors; same with IU and management.

That's not the point anyway. The point is that Hope was trying to make a point about academics at Purdue and made a mess of it.

blr1426

August 8th, 2010 at 2:08 PM ^

There is, in fact, a rule that prohibits Purdue and IU from offering certain dupilicate courses of studies.  The General Assembly doesn't see the point in supporting identical programs at diffierent universities.  Hence, like the poster said, there is no law or medical school at Purdue, and there is no engineering school at IU.  As for business majors, you'll only find them at IU.  At Purdue, you'd have to major in management, and make no mistake, several of those classes are no joke (as far as non-engineering classes go anyhow).  Sure, management classes may seem an awful lot like the classes business school majors take at other schools, but the degree reads management, not business.

The only majors that I know for sure overlap are some of the science majors (for instance, you can major in chemistry at either school) but I assume that is because the school of science is an important asset for IU's med school. It's possible that there are also some liberal arts overlap (psych, soc, education).

The author has correctly identified Organizational leadership and supervision for what it is.  I knew several people that majored in OLS and the campus term for it was Oh Lord Save Me.  One of their required courses is an Industrial Engineering course that is so easy Industrial Engineering majors aren't allowed to take it for credit.

FWIW, we have 42 players with declared majors (from UMOD):

6 engineers (14%, Aero, Civil, 2 ME's, MSE/NAME dual major, Nuclear)

1 education (2%)

14 LSA (33% Classical Civ, 2 Econ, History, History/Sociology, Physics, 2 Poli Sci, Psychology (honors), 5 Sociology)

21 Kinesiology (50% Athletic Training, 4 Movement Science, 3 Phsyical Education, 14 Sport Management)

Undeclareds are 15 BGS, 21 Kinesiology, 22 LSA, and 2 with no listing.
