OT: Asst Prof Speaks Out at MSU BoT Meeting

Submitted by Njia on

ICYMI: This was an interesting moment for Engler and the MSU Board of Trustees. It shows just how out of touch the school's new administration continues to be.

Key quote from Engler:

MSU Interim President John Engler asked Boucher to leave. Afterward, Engler said the man who left the meeting was “trapped maybe in the past.” The audience booed.

with the way the school is responding. You should be too. Burn it down in this case means throwing out their current leadership and starting over. MSU has a lot of work to do and they seem to be focused on fighting PR battles while making only painless changes.

They should be having a truly independent examination of what went wrong and what needs to change. They are doing the opposite of that.

Wait so you see nothing wrong and the overwhelming vote of no confidence and student protests are a "toxic witch hunt?"  Seems reasonable.  BTW, witch hunt implies that nothing was done wrong.  Is that the stand you want to take?

I am sure there are some good people with maybe good intentions. The problem is that the leadership at MSU doesn't seem to be "good intentions" to be open with the problem and find a solution.  The faculty response seems to clearly evidence this.

So your phrase "witch hunt" is supposed to evoke the play by University of Michigan alumnus Arthur Miller, The Crucible, right?  Where several preteen and teenage girls in colonial Salem, Massachusetts, falsely accuse some prominent citizens of being witches?

It seems to me that comparing what is going on at Michigan State to the play that gave us the phrase "witch hunt" is in rather poor taste.  Or are you asserting that, like in that play, there really are no true witches and that the only evil people are the ones making the accusations?

have absolutely no idea what is transpiring within the MSU administration right now.  Their primary interest seems to be to discredit ESPN, which is really odd because the OTL article itself is not anything "official" or "binding" as to anybody.  It is just an article.  What exactly is it that they are trying to accomplish by going to war with ESPN over this, now?  That cat is out the bag, any mention of ESPN by Michigan State just keeps the story in the news longer.  Even discrediting ESPN will not restore MSU's image or their credibility, it is a no-win battle for them.  They are managing to not only do the wrong things, but also to do the wrong things in the worst possible way for themselves.  It is crazy town.

It appears to be a misguided attempt to save a little dignity.  There is no hiding from what Nassar did and their role in it.  They’ve lost their beloved (and fund-raising expert) President and AD.  The academics are against the Trustees and Administration.  All that’s left is to try and show that they still have good sports.  It’s like an inferno, and MSU is rushing back in to try to save the family photo album.

to maintain the status quo, protect the school the any more major liability, and very importantly to protect Izzo and Dantonio.

They know its all over if those two are forced out as they should be.

There is way more under the rug here than you can imagine and they're super close to having it exposed for the world to see.  And they'll protect that at all costs.

Sayeth the Sociology Professor:

He then stood in the middle of the boardroom and referenced a vote of no confidence in the trustees cast earlier in the week by the Faculty Senate and said: “No confidence. No confidence. Step down! Step down! Step down! We need a psychological reset. We need a reset. We need a new MSU. A new MSU!”

As if those two occupations are mutually exclusive.  I mean, they're combined more often than not.  As Pierre P-Biddy Bourdieu once free-styled:

The function of sociology,

as with all sciences,

is to reveal that which is hidden,

like my lady's biology,

she don't need no sexual appliances,

the way she rides and likes to be ridden.

Trying to get some culture change at MSU is like Jack Nicholson trying to watch the World Series in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. As long as Nurse Ratchet is running the show, nothing is going to change.

accountability. They are employing a Fabian strategy of fight and retreat and hope that people lose interest. Activists cannot let up. They'll have to be relentless to rid MSU of these turds.

Someone sent me a pod of one of his rants this week. It was to be expected. And it did nothing to improve the larger situation for his favorite school.

His whole show rests on the myth of MSU and how he could rile up Michigan fans using that myth.

MIchigan fans who are smart are getting a wake up with all this.  A reminder that the differences between the two places are vast. And that a few years of bad coaches followed by a smattering of bad luck on a football field mean very little in the grand scheme of what's important.

Michigan fans taking MSU's sports success less seriously is a huge threat to the fundamental con of his show. He's fighting his butt off to keep the myth alive. Not unlike their administration.
